lVortl1glenn Undefeatea' Skyline league Champs Many consider going to a North- glenn Norsemen football game as an instant replay to the previous week. The Norsemen victoriously proved this once again by demol- ishing the Westminster Warriors 52-6. The first quarter proved to be a defensive battle, but Doug Simcik speered across the goal line from three yards out with the first of six touchdowns. Mike Stein contri- buted the point after touchdown lPATl to make the score 7-0 after the first quarter. The Norse began to move the ball quickly downfield and then Simcik went across from two-yards out, The Warriors look- ed as if they paid no heed to the Norsemen's threat, moving the ball effectively for a 79 yard scor- ing spree with quarterback Eddie Hoffman taking the ball over from the two yard line. The Warriors attempted a running play for the two point conversion but the Norse defense stiffened and the score stood 136. Both defenses proved to be more powerful than the offenses in the second quarter by letting only one touchdown score, which- was Stanley Wilcox pounding in a oneqyard run with only seconds to play 'before halftime. As both teams went into the locker room the scoreboard showed, North- glenn 19, Westminster 6. Y Northglenn began to dominate the third quarter with Doug An- derson returning the opening kick-- off to mid-field to give the Norse- Ymzh prime' field' position. ,North- glenn gjartedpatlk, Qfkbq Stein? went totlerfk and with in orse Write Dff Powerful Bruins 142 fifty yard touchdown bomb to speedy Wingback Terry Guice. Then Stein put his foot in the act by adding the extra-point attempt and making the score 26-6. Simcik added twelve more points in the third quarter and with the help of a PAT from Mike Stein the score inflated in a paral- lel with our economy to 3945. The fourth quarter was much the same with Simcik scoring on runs of one and two yards and Stein adding one PAT. This ran up the final score to be 52-6, in which Coach Shelley was pleased with the great con- trolled defense in the second half. Norse Win 8 Straight After the undoubtable wins against Meritt Hutton and High- land, the Norsemen faced the green raiders turning them yel- low. Norsemen's victory was forty four to seven. Arvada West Slips By On Illegal Play? by Steve Clark It was the biggest play of the contest, McGregor and Northglenn Coach Don Shelley agreed after the game, We've had it all year, said McGregor, Ubut weive been saving it. That was a quote from the Denver Post, Sunday, Dec. 3, in a story by Denver Post sports writer Joseph Sanchez. A story the next day, by the same writer. headlined Arvada West Still Celebrating , included this quote In reviewing the game, McGregor reiterated his belief that a t'sleeper pass play that gave Arvada West position to go ahead 28-21 and a time consuming drive capped by a 19-yard field goal by John Oyer with eight seconds left were the two key factors in the game. No question about it, that was the big play of the game, McGregor said, We've had two or three trick plays we used this year but we've been saving this one, read another quote We used this play when I played in Canada and later when I coached in junior high, he said, We ran it twice today but the second time we were too slow in getting to it CDec. 3, Denver Post, P. 433 The socalled Big Play , the sleeper play, worked like this, Arvada West Coach McGregor sent two men on to the field and brought three play- ers to the sideline. One player, Randy Strandberg, remained in bounds and inside the line of scrimmage, blending in with the players on the sidelines. He went down the field undetected and took a 37 yard pass from Randy Berry which setup a go ahead touchdown four plays later. Apparently that Big Playt' was in violation of the book of National Federation of High School Football rules. Rule 9, section 4, article 3 under illegal participation states, No team A player shall be lying on the ground, nor shall team A attendanttsi or substitutetsi or a substitution be used to deceive team B at or immediately before the snap. Northglenn officials did not and will not protest the game which would have given the Norsemen the first Skyline League State Championship ever. I think Arvada West will have this on their minds for a long time, says Dave Kested, Sports Editor for the Nordic Times, we as Norsemen have the proud feeling of knowing our team played a fair game and for them to beat us by only that much with all this against us proves that Northglenn has a first rate team. Football player Terry Guice says, UI guess the only eay to see what kind of sportsmanship a school has is for it to lose and our sportsmanship is fantastic. l l l l l 1 l
