Rediscovered several times throughout the 14th to 16th centuries by Europeans, the islands had been settled in prehistoric times by Polynesian peoples. An American-built massive airbase at Nandi on Viti Levu, the largest island in the group, and the capital Suva, a clean, bustling, , pepper tree-lined city are the stop-overs of the Pacific.
