With that my guide ushered me into a dark cellar where something like a Charles Addams cartoon was being enacted. As we staggered out, she told me that that was Revell's Halloween Party. We tiptoed past the Revell living room where Miss Snell was telling ghost stories. I was glad to get out into the open air where we saw all the Revell girls in Scottish caps lined up, prepared to march to fife and drums and The Tavern Song. We followed them to the flagpole, and there I found that it was Mountain Day, entailing a modern form of Bacchanalian procession to the hills. When we returned it began to snow and my mysterious guide said, It's time for Vespersf' As we listened to jacques, Come Here, we were completely rewarded for our exertion. The next thing I knew, the service, vacation, and mid-years were all over, and in the pulpit stood Dr. Meany. As he read his academic honor roll, my guide told me excitedly that several of those honored were freshmen. Suddenly we were out in the snow, and in the midst of an honest-to-goodness Winter Carnival, we were pleased to see many prizes for competition being carried off by members of the younger ranks. Then my guide led me away to hear members of both freshman dorms practicing together for the Song Contest. Minutes later they were singing, I wish I were a Porcupine, and Tiritomba before the whole school. We waited with baited breath has Dr. Meany began announcing the winners, we and the freshmen nearly lost our minds in the excitement of winning first prize. Before I knew it, though, I was dragged off to help make paper fiowers for the class party, the theme was South Pacific. Original entertainment and elaborate decorations at the party detracted from my original purpose of obtaining interviews, and so I was determined to be a good reporter during Sacred Concert. Filled with awe, however, I forgot all about my note-taking. Almost immediately my campus guide said, Let's go to the freshman picnic! Clts slogan was Capture the Hag - the movies are stag. b Back to the last class meeting in the Audio-Visual room, where a great secret was revealed: The Carrs were to join Miss Robertson as class teachers for '62, Here the year was topped off with pink punch and ice cream - I heard a strange whirring sound and lost my balance, when I awoke a trench-coated figure said, Hello! I'm your campus guide. But before she had time to begin the year again I realized that it was time for me to be on my way. I made for the door, waving farewell to the Spirit of Freshman year. I walked down the corridor and stopped in front of the door marked 60. This time I didn't knock, but gently and firmly opened the door. The room was pitch black. I heard excited whisperings and loud crunchings on celery. I wasn't sure what to say at first, but the girls welcomed me as if I were one of them. When I explained my mission I was not sure what their reaction would beg however, they seemed flattered by the idea that I wished to interview them. I sat down in the dark, and began with the question, Which one of you wears the trench coat and sunglasses - and why? A voice from the dark said, We all do. Especially at this time of year when we've been sunning in the pasture. The pasture! I said, Do you live on a farm?'i No, as a matter of fact, we're at Northfield. Well, what can you tell me about your year? I asked, preparing my mind for this barrage of information. Well, we came the first day in a heat wave, and found to our horror that we had to wear .rturdier - you know - oxfords. Our first concert was William Warfield - did you know that he was in Porgy and Bess? Don't forget Teahouse of the August Moon and the Saint Paul's Choir, cut in someone from the darkness. I beg you not to interrupt, the first voice said with dignity. You're way up to January and I was just going to tell about Mountain Day. What a blast - literally! How witty, grumbled the second voice icily. And Hermon won the Deerfield Game! NHC will not 569 me 5f0PPif1S here - FanCy? Does that banner still wave? You must mention Vespers, they all said together. Not exams, though. Someone said, I never thought we'd have a Winter Carnival this year . . . We didn't, interrupted someone else. As I was going to say, we had a Rip Van Winkle day. You know, bowling and sleeping. I'll never forget the Banner Dance! said a voice dreamily. l'll never forget the banner! And l'll never forget my blind date . . This spring, though, everything went so fast that it's hard to remember anything after Spring Vacation, except the rigamarole we went through to write class songs for the next years - and to choose our class hats. Don't you think they'l1 be really cool? Sure - just like Robin Hood hats, only red. Speaking of Robin Hood Hats - what did you think of Tree Day? Oh! I thought it was really cool. ' said the really cool girl. Someone began to hum I'm Called Little Buttercup, and I could hear people smiling in the dark. They explained to me that they had just seen the Commencement Operetta, HMS Pinafore, which had been a great success. Suddenly the door creaked, the girls gasped and I heard them dive for hiding places. I stood behind the door as a regal faculty member strode through, I Hed while I had the chance, and found myself again in the corridor of the Broken Arms Hotel. A bit subdued, I crept to the door marked 61. I rolled up my sleeves, knocked once, and without waiting for a reply, walked in. In the room was a monstrous silver machine, from which Cat intervals? came the words, Three cheers for junior Year, This is a recorded message. I squinted through the glare of searchlights and neon signs, past the frothing tubes of scarlet liquid, past meters, dials, cranks, cogs, whistles, sirens, and a grand viewing screen to the very top of the machine. There, at the summit, stood a lone figure who I could tell was wearing a trench coat and sunglasses. The figure dramatically pushed a button, the lights dimmed, I sank into a velvet-cushioned chair, the voice cheering junior Year faded into soothing music, which I recognized as A Summer Place, and on the movie screen appeared a picture of a hurricane. Through all the rain I discerned a few figures groping towards a yellow brick building. The loudspeaker announced soothingly, Don't panic, everyone, you're safe in Kenarden now, and you can register. V f - V, As the picture faded into a different scene, I thought, Aha. Screen o consciousness On the screen now were many confused-looking girls stampeding down a spiral staircase. I backed out and thanked the machine for the interview. The figure at the IOP flicked a switch and a pleasant smile was projected on the screen. The loudspeaker crackled, Our pleasure. Come again. This is a recorded message . . I made my way to the last room on the corridor, it was marked 62. I must confess that I approached the door with trepidation, but any good reporter gets the whole story. I knocked merely as a formality, but to my surprise, someone answered. This time, instead of being hit on the head or confronted by a leviathan, I was greeted by three charming girls who offered me a cup of coffee. The room was pleasant and cozy with its pine walls glowing from the light of a fire, an atmosphere of well-being and serenity surrounded us, as if to be in this room were a privilege. As the girls began to chatter, I took out my pad and pencil and sat down in an easy chair, first removing a trenchcoat and a pair of sunglasses which were on the seat. Wasn'r the 'Mikado' wonderful! said one of the girls luxuriously. You know, this room somehow makes you want to reminisce. Remember Seating Day - and wasn't it fun to be on top of the hill for a change? And Mountain Day. It was actually on a mountain, and how elusive the faculty were. And the outdoor mixer with Hermon - the village square atmosphere. Oh, and remember Chad Mitchell and Miriam Makeba? And all the other concerts? A heck of a lot of entertainment, but I liked it. Dr. Jones' impressive inauguration and the ground-breaking for the new dorm were entertaining too, don't forget - not to mention 'Invitation to a Murder'. The S.A.T,'s were entertaining too, muttered someone. And Hermon won the Deerfield game, 22 to 0. If you don't call that entertaining, I don't know what is! But I think the best entertainment of all was 'Saint joan' - don't you? Well, I think our class deserved to be entertained in such style! We managed to make Echo I a permanent - we hope - fixture and we preserved our dignity effectively on Founder's Day. And I'll never forget that no-class Monday. It must be because we're seniors that things turned out so luckily. That's also probably the reason we had a real Carnival again - with sculptures at la Mother Goose -- none of this Rip Van Winkle business for me! As far as I'm concerned the Glee Club Concert was the best entertainment of the second semester. 'But how can you dismiss Sacred Concert and Tree Day - that wonderful Peter Pan? You're both out of your minds! Didn't we just see the 'Mikado' last night? C A smashing success! D Then the girls began to collect the tea things, and I looked towards the door, the door of the apartment marked 62. Is this the end? I asked myself. No! said one of the girls, putting on her trenchcoat and sunglasses. It's only the beginning. They all cheered and escorted me through the door. . . . and now you know why I want to go to Northfield. bUI9I:.lf?4L 'NW W , ' hfqn. -N G! if fy as as fy M051 ' ' Musccm. c4qss1'94 sf 9 S 'V-9 wwf? These girls decorate the dorm bulletin boards with pictures on Sunday, carry library notices to house meetings and raise funds at the Book Auction in the Spring to sponsor a little girl in Greece. The Liz'f Board selects the best of poetry, essays, short stories and art work created by the girls and col- lects them into the semi-annual issues of the North- field Literary Magazine.
