How wonderful to see you after these years! . You havenlt changed a bit! 4 ' You havenyt either, Betty. You look just the way lj l you used to back at the Sem-except that your hair's gray ' A 7? now. Did you get back to our twenty-fifth reunion? X No, but Iid have loved to. Remember the first time we y i came to Northfield? South Hall was in all its glory, without .l even busses when we were there. Yes, and remember our first sight of Mrs. Reed! Our freshman year was wonderful, wasnlt it! I've never forgotten the fun we had on Field Day, our first public appearance as a classf, You know, I can still see us at the New Girls' Recep- tion, fresh as paint and twice as green. And our first privi- lege with the Hermonties was so exciting. Do you remember how they were quarantined two days later and didn't get out until Sacred Concert? What a blow to the South Hall bellesli' So many things happened to make that year a good one! Remember our first Mountain Day, our first Christmas vacation preceded by one of Miss Wilson's train talks, and our first mid-years? I'll never forget my fright as I Went to my first exam. They really weren't so bad, though, as I remember themf' Elena Shinn and Fay Smiley were Carnival King and Queen that year, werenlt they? They certainly made a hand- .- 2fMm-4-mu-L-. some couple. And Elena Shinn was May Queen, too. Tree Day and Sacred Concert made a great impression on us little freshmen, especially the male part of the concert. That was our only year together as a class. I think we all had mixed feelings of regret and happy anticipation that year when we went home, knowing that in September we would return to widely scattered hallsf, Sophomore year was fun. Jane Donnelly was our president again, and we'd elected Miss Robinson our class teacher. We were very much one class, even though we had been separated. I still think we showed great presence of mind on Field Day when the class lust before us sang to the tune of Ancbom Aweigh--the tune of our own song! I guess we were growing up! The mountain didnlt seem so far away that year eitherll' lt was in our sophomore year that Miss Allen and Miss MacBrayne made love so convincingly in the faculty play, wasn't it? That performance quite changed my opinion about the human qualities of the facultyf' Oh jane, will you ever forget our disappointment when we looked out on Founders Day and saw no snow? Then, to top it off, it had to rain so that we couldn't even go for 38 F O R T Y hay rides. Peg Morrell and Libby Rollason lorded it over us that year. Seeing them almost made up for our disappointment. In all our maturity, I think we sophomores decided that they were the perfect Snow King and Queen. And speaking of perfect queens, Peggy Hendrickson was certainly all anyone could ask for a May Queen. Tree Day and Sacred Concert always stand out in my memory as red letter days, and sophomore year was no exceptionf, Yes, everything made for a wonderful year, including four parties with Hermon. I remember thinking that the only reason Iid rather be a junior than a sophomore was because we'd get two more partiesf' As I remember it, a huge gust of wind puffed us into our junior year. The weather that fall was terrible, and even Seating Day was cold and wet. It was bad enough being told by the Seniors that we must have them for chaperones, but when our white dresses started to cling to us like lastex bathing suits, that was almost too much. Mountain Day made up for all other bad weather that year. The only trouble was that everyone was prepared for it to be cold, as it had been the year before. We got fooled on that one! We certainly did! The days must have flown by after Mountain Day, for my next memory is Founderis Day and Winter Carnival. There was plenty of snow that year, so that King Al Pfeiffer, and Queen Libby Rollason, had a beautiful white campus to tulef' From white to green! Phil Lawson's campus was fully as beautiful, although a different color, when she reigned as May Queen! I have seldom seen a more beautiful sight than my first glimpse of her as she appeared on Tree Dayf, The next day was Sacred Concert, and widowed though we were by a quarantined Hermon, I've heard a great many people express the opinion that it was the best Sacred Concert on record! The planting of our silver birch, and the Spade Orations on Tree Day made us feel a little nearer our Senior year. The real thrill came, though, when we had watched all the Seniors get their diplomas. Do you remember the way we dashed from the auditorium to sing, or rather shout, At last we are seated as Seniors ? Our day had come, and we were making the most of itf' It's funny, but my first memory of Senior year is the same as the last one of junior year: singing the gloating song. We certainly gloated enough. I remember gloating about all the Senior privileges, even sitting opposite! Mountain Day came-our best, and our last. Then there was the Halloween party in the gym and a few weeks later a Hermon dinner party where we actually got corsages! ! Senior year was a sad one in one respect. We lost Miss Wilson for the winter months. Miss Lyon substituted for her nobly in her train talk, but the Sem just didnlt seem right without Miss Wilson around. While she was gone, some of the most important events of the year took place. On Founders Day we donned Caps and Gowns for the first time and marched in stately Senior dignity down the chapel aisle. This time for King and Queen of the Carnival we had two members of our own class: Ann Allison and Suki Scheffer. Naturally they were the best yet, weren't they, jane? 39 T H F I E L D N O R ,. fig :ral on 'wi-.ij , QB V f-47:45 li 46 at 5 , ,T 5- . 5- N7 4' .I V fag 1 . gm 5 fi A l 'li S .. Think how much more we would have missed Miss Wilson in the spring months. In May we saw our last Tree Day, with twelve beauties of the Senior Class, led by Doris Bird, our May Queen, gracing the hockey field. The next day was our last Sacred Concert, so I guess we were forgiven if we waxed just a little sentimental over it. My favorite day in May was Class Day. No classes, late breakfast, a tour of the sights of Northfield, and a banquet, all appealed to me. I think I was just beginning to realize what it meant to be a Senior when it was all over, and there we were at the banquet, reading the class prophecy and wondering where we would be in twenty-five years. You sound as if Class Day were the last day of school! We still had two or three important weeks of school, in- cluding Hnals. Then came that great day, our day, We alone were the center of attention, it was to us alone that Sir Wilfred Grenfell talked. As we left the auditorium, we heard the gloating song being sung by our juniors. Remember how we watched them singing with amused superiority mingled with sadness? Think of how we would have laughed if we had known that we would be talking about Northfield after all these years! As far as we were concerned then, it was on to college, on to careers, and on Cwe hopedj to marriage! ANN CARY STUCKEY. F O R T Y TREE DAY OB and Una had been Maying since dawn in the shaggy old forest of Ennis. Flowers were thick, and soon the baskets overflowed with pink sweetness. just as they straightened up from the last blossom, they caught sight of a meadow through the branches ahead. They raced out onto it, gasped and stopped short. There lay an exquisite fairy ring, smooth as velvet, and green as jade. Una,l' said Rob solemnly, What do you do with a fairy ring?l' I don't know what a human does, she answered, but the fairies dance around them. Let's pretend that thatls what we aref' All right, said Rob, but I hope they don't mind. We have awfully big feet for fairies. They swung into the the timeless pagan dance that Mother Engiffing had told them belonged to fairies. At last they sat down in the middle of the ring. They grew drowsy, .ro drowsy, the grass was beautiful mattress, the breeze closed their eyelids, and they slept. From far off in the forest, floating on the heavy air came the sound of joyous music. Into the meadow, weaving and swaying, floated fairies, leading their queen to her garlanded throne. Softly they waked the children and stepped back. Then began the most wonderful sight! All the dolls of all the lands came trooping in, alive and friendly, dancing each the dance of his own country. The children ran about, watching, examining, asking questions. All too soon, at a signal from the martial Highlanders, the group melted away, and the astonished children dropped back into the ring. If I hadnt seen it myself, -but Rob's sentence never was finished, for the minute their heads touched the grass, they fell asleep again. Mid-afternoon came, and the village children, costumed for the festival invaded the woods and took possession of the meadow. Their chatter and laughter very soon succeeded in waking Rob and Una. They sat up and looked at each other. I feel as if Ild had a wonderful dream, said Rob, and I can't seem to think what it was about. Me too, said Una, but, look! The May poles are up. Let's go dance. MARGARET RIGGS. -'4 I N O R T H F I E L D CLASS ORATION Remembering Thou hast taught us that the purpose of our strife Is not to make a living, but nobly to make a lifef' INCE I first heard them, these two lines of our Alma Mater have kindled my imagination. They seem to express to me the fundamental ideal Northfield has been trying to teach us. Youth is supposed to be the period when we equip ourselves with the implements that we shall use in the struggle ahead. Truth, courage, kindness, unselfish- ness, openmindedness, intellectual integrity, all are characteristics we hope to have and keep throughout life. Northfield has placed these ideals before us and has trained us so that it is possible for us to follow them in a higher way of life. Physical courage and a love of fairness have been developed in us through our sports. We have learned unselfish- ness, kindness and cooperation in living with other girls. Our class work has taught us to think an idea through more clearly, that is, to be intellectually honest, to reach the right conclusion from the given hypothesis. Through Bible class and the worship inspiring atmosphere of our chapel we have had instilled in us the ideas of loving God and treating our neighbors as ourselves, which is true religion. We can truly say that our training here at Northfield has not only shown us what should be done, but has also helped us to do it. But now that we are soon to leave Her shall we be able to cling to these, our ideals, and pattern our lives accordingly? I heard somebody say once of a young man, He lost his ideal of faith in human kind, he grew upf, If ideals are mere childish fancy, goals to which we shall never be able to hold, we do not want them, for what is the use of a plan that theoretically is good, but practically has no value. This younger generation, as we are often called, I think, is too practical to put its faith in values which it believes will not survive. But I believe that we can keep our ideals, make them work. If we do not follow the ideals of loving God and our neighbor, of doing our bit to make the world better, it is the fault of no one but ourselves, for we are given the power to choose whether we shall do our best, or our second best, and the knowledge of what is our best. But to every man there openeth A high way, and a low, And every man decideth The way his soul shall gofi With so many countries in the agony of war, with the world in such a state of chaos, we are so likely to become bitter, to assume the attitude that trying to make the world better is no use. Our parents' generation helped to get the world in this mess, and if they can't get it out, how are we supposed to? So often we ,remember that the sins of the father are visited on the children to the second and third generation, but forget that although we may not suffer for the mistakes we will surely make. our children will. Therefore it is our duty to do what we can to lessen the evil that our children will have to bear. It does seem an impossible task, and it is impossible if we hope completely to obliterate evil in one 42 F O R T Y generation. We must be willing to work our hardest and see little or no seeming result, confident that in the final complete achievement our work will be spun into the thread of which the fabric is woven. None of us will ever forget the feeling of despondency we experienced when we looked the next morning on the seemingly irreparable destruction caused by the hurricane. Bright though the sun shone that morning, it seemed impossible that our campus would ever againbe orderly and beautiful. Yet that very morning men were at work clearing away the debris, and by steady systematic labor, after many months it is true, the seem- ingly impossible feat was accomplished. This Herculean task was not accomplished by one man. It took the cooperation of many. The world, on a far greater scale than our hurricane-swept campus, is in a state of chaos which demands all our abilities and training to correct, and if we try to keep our ideals steadily in front of us, some day, perhaps not in our time, our world may be orderly and beautiful. High though We may realize our ideals to be, we ourselves will never have the power to keep to them steadily. Only with the help of another, greater than We, will our impossible task become increasingly possible. If we eventually realize the source of power suggested in our class hymn, which can keep us to our high ideals, without which there can be no higher way, Northfield will have accomplished her purpose. A wall where dusty hollyhocks Have spiced the fragrant morning air, And bees attend with murmuring care The winding of the four-o'c1ocks. A warmly golden wall around A carpet of such perfect peace That all but intimacies cease, And laughing secrets fleck the ground. Within a wall the world is gay With glad and vivid-colored things. HE organizational plan of the Church offers many opportunities for student initiative and leadership. Each of the five departments and many committees has a student chairman on whom, to a very considerable extent, rests the responsibility of making the work elfective. Students in this Church do what adults do in other churches, where young people usually sit on the sidelines. Each part of the work has a faculty advisor who works closely with the chairman. The whole program centers in the Cabinet, elected annually by all students and faculty members. The leaders are chosen from students who have been active in the work in the previous year. Many of them have gone on to take significant places of leadership in college and home churches. 51 ffl Ito 1'n fi WZAX 1 jfl' N O R T Hbllijll E I.
