Joining the 142 seniors for their last year were 126 juniors who au- tomatically started plans for the Junior-Senior Prom. Many of the 127 sophomores experienced the technique of dissecting a fetal pig. 131 freshman discovered what it feels like to be a High School student. Completing the student body were the Jr. High students; they spent the year learning the rules. Fog and snow were the only things that kept the students from going the full term of the school year. On February 18, 19, and 20 Vi e had 3 consecutive fog days, an event that rarely if ever occurs at NHS. The snow days were minimal compared with the past years. The Norsemen defeated Huntington Catholic and Wabash enroute to the championship game against Homestead. Against a strong Homestead squad, the Norse re- mained even until the last four minutes of play when the opposing team pulled away. Scott Hispher and Tim Shafer had a fine showing in the sectional as did other sen- iors Ken Dawes, John Johnson, Gary Miller, and Rick Treska. Dur- ing regular season play, the Big Blue started out slow but pulled up to a 7-7 record during mid January. The return of six let- termen keeps next year ' s team looking optomistic. These girls gave the wrestlers constant encouragement and of- ten times served as the only fans. 66 Cheerblock Mat Maids FCA and Tri Sigma Serve Community FCA and Tri Sigma were active groups this year, trying to do things to help the community. FCA sponsored John Chowning ' s attendance at FCA camp. They had a guest speaker for a con- vocation, who told stories and sang songs. His name was Mr. Rigg. The poem below was written by his son shortly before he was killed in a car accident. Tri Sigma talked of several dif- ferent ideas for helping others. They co-sponsored the Valentine ' s dance with the Art Club, As a project at the end of the year the club honored all of the staff with posters of thanks with names of all staff members on them. I will stay away from things that keep me from the Lord, And any kind of sport that keeps me from my Sword. I ' ll go through life with Jesus standing by my side. He ' ll help me when I falter and catch me when I slide. I ' ll let God have a part in my life while I ' m alive. So when I go to heaven Jesus Christ will give me five. Mr Kaltenmark, serving his fourth year as Athletic Direct organizes all sports events. The Graduating Class of 1981 When the senior class first en- tered the halls in 1975, we were ready to accept the challenge of high school and slowly gained ex- perience in learning how to do so. Of the 138 graduates, we pro- duced many athletic achievements and excelled in both dramatic and musical talents. Class officers were Cathy Deeter, President; Julie Renbarger, Vice President; Daria Carr, Secretary; Maria Carr, Trea- surer; and Stan Kirtlan, Reporter: Mid-term graduates included Brian Allman, Belinda Applegate, Kim Daniels, Betty Bolin, Debbie Brock, Cheryl Palmer, Dave Corn, Julie Patton, Tom Thompson, Lisa Elliott, David Honeycutt, and Brad Younger. The seniors elected to have a dinner opposed to the tra- ditional breakfast. It was held at Country Manor. The class was grateful to the cooks for serving cake to all senior class members and to Mr. Price for his guidance. The class of 81 was not the first graduating class from Northfield nor will we be the last, but we have shared something in common for six years. We were all part of the class of 1981. After we leave Northfield, some continue their education, some become married, some obtain a job and work daily, and some depart from our world. But life goes on and we should en- joy and cherish each day. Life can only be experienced once. So we leave for you this to remember: THIS IS IT. Good Luck to every member of the class of 1981. But at seventh grade level, the four schools combine into one, transferring their pride to North- field. Our community experienced a new change when the construc- tion of Sharp Creek elementary combined the old Lagro and Ur- bana schools. The Wabash area has a variety of schools as does it have merchants. The yearbook staff wishes to thank all of the sponsors who have helped make this years edition of the Shield possible. This year the Mighty Mouth motto was What we believe we will achieve, and Gregg Reed did just that. Gregg assured himself the participation in the Nationals when he won the Humorous Champion- ship in the Northern NFL District. At the Nationals, held at the University of Utah June 14-20, 1981, Gregg performed his five- character cut from Larry Gelbart ' s SLY FOX and won his way to 25th place out of 120 contestants. Gregg was the first student from NHS to ever make it to the Na- tionals. Congratulations Gregg and Coach Mrs. Bickel!! At left, Gregg Reed performs for the Psi Iota Xi Sorority, one of the organizations which gave him financial support, and at right, he practices for Mr. Griffith. OEA Chapter ' 1st in Nation ' Seven NHS seniors earned the honor of attending the OEA na- tional competition in San Antonio, Texas. Members of OEA (office education association) are seniors in office training and accounting data processing. Those attending were Linda Beals, Jean Ann Bi- dwell, Lori Long, Danette Norman, Mary Shaw, Delinda Shepherd and Pama Staton. The OEA organization donated to the Special Olympics, the WOWO penny pitch, held pizza and bake sales, and served the com- munity in many other ways. Good Job Girls!! After a year of work, some of the senior staff members celebrated. fc Yearbook Helpers 159 HEY YOU, Now that you have looked at your copy of the Shield , we want you to think a minute about how much work went into this book. We began working on thfe ' yea ' ' ' s book when we attended Indiana University Yearbook Camp June 22-July 4, 1980 When we returned to Northfield, we assigned pictures to be taken of drivers education and summer band. As we began, we thought we would be the ones to never finish a year- book! But we did, and we did it for you! Don ' t think this was easy work. We didn ' t COMPLETELY finish until June 28, 1981!?!?!?!? However, we had much help, esp- ecially from the following people. We just want to say Thank You! To Mrs. Kitt, who has been yearbook advisor for seven years, for her help in making decisions and persuading us on when things were quite rough . Also, thanks to the PSI IOTA XI for a $25.00 scholarship toward yearbook camp. Jenny Draper, Karen Eilts, Dave Ault, Andy Drook, Chris Gifford, and Angle Nixon were responsible for the photography work. The following students were espceially helpful because they now know how much work it takes to organize a 160 page yearbook. They are Stan Kirtlan, the Carr girls (when not grounded!), Nikki Stefanatos, Jean Ann Bidwell, Trisha Metz, Rick Tisdale, Stacie Wolfrum, and to all you people who helped with the autograph dance, typed, identified pictures, and helped sell ads. Also, a very big thank you to the faculty and staff for their endless cooperation and to all the very special people (you know who you are) for all of your patience, typing, writing, and constant understanding-especial ly from Mrs. Kitt. Good Luck to Kim and Susan next year and we ' re glad you worked with us till 11:00 o ' clock in Squire ' s basement before you left for camp. This is really it! B H ehsso P.S. Melissa BethJ ., You ' ve got what it tdkes! Mrs. Kitt -Ik
