The N-crowd Life at Northfield begins at 8:00 a.m. August 25th. One by one the buses arrive at school and hesi- tantly we step off. Some of us drive our family cars to school af- ter begging our parents and prom- ising not to get one scratch on any square inch of the car. While oth- ers who are fortunate enough to own a car drive to school. We walk slowly into the building wondering what changes have been made and asking ourselves, How will I ever get back into the swing of things? We go to our lockers and talk to our friends whom we have not seen for sometime. When the bell rings at 8:10 we walk to our first class. Some will have already gone to class for fear of not finding it or being late. We glance around the room to see if any of our friends are there. Sometimes we see a new face. We walk over to a seat and sit down. The room is silent. One could al- most hear a pin drop. As the teacher enters the room all eyes are on him. He proceeds to take a head count and says in a day or so he will make a seating chart. 2 Opening

He surveys the room with a careful eye and then passes out those old books. We glance through the book and wonder how we are ever going to learn all of this in nine months, but the teacher assures we will. Time passes quickly, but not fast enough it seems. Five minutes be- fore the end of class the teacher makes our first assignment. Every- one knew that he was going to make it. The bell rings and the first class is over. In five minutes the next class begins and later another. . h When it is time for lunch some of us go to the cafeteria to eat and talk to friends. Some go to the gym to play ping pong. An- other bell rings at the end of the lunch period. We know we only have a few classes to go before we can go home at 3:15 p.m. The afternoon passes quickly and now it is 3:15. There is all at once a scurry to go home. Some don ' t go home right away, but stay for athletic practice or special or- ganization meetings. Tomorrow will be another day in our life as a member of the N-Crowd. 4 Opening
