Northern ranks at the top in athletics. Since 1952 the football team has finished either first, second or third in the Oklahoma Iuco Conference. Physical education at NOJC includes not only football, basketball, baseball, and track but also judo, golf, and physical fitness courses. Intramural basketball games give everyone a chance to get in the play.

In addition to the freshman English com- position course that all college students en- counter, the Language Arts department offers training in such diverse fields as foreign lan- guages and journalism, classic literature and modern radio. Students may gain practical experience in communicative skills by working for THE MAVERICK, NOIC's prize-winning student newspaper, and by broadcasting over KMAV, campus radio station. Competing in forensic and debate tournaments, or per- forming in college drama productions and assembly programs are other activities that are a part of Language arts. The library, the heart of any good college is a particularly strong ally of the Language Arts. Northern's library shelves some 13, O00 books and figures reveal a circulation in- crease yearly. A new library building is under con- struction with completion date expected for the 1962 fall term.

Instructor McCown works a difficult problem for the class. 18 Chemistry students conduct an experiment. x The department of math and science has an enrollment well above 100 in most of the courses offered. These courses include Chemistry, algebra, trigonometry, physics, Zoology, botany, and an anatomy and physiology course. Plans for the near future in- clude the expansion of the chem- istry laboratory and classroom facilities and the possible intro- duction of courses in chemical and electronics technology.
