In addition to the freshman English com- position course that all college students en- counter, the Language Arts department offers training in such diverse fields as foreign lan- guages and journalism, classic literature and modern radio. Students may gain practical experience in communicative skills by working for THE MAVERICK, NOIC's prize-winning student newspaper, and by broadcasting over KMAV, campus radio station. Competing in forensic and debate tournaments, or per- forming in college drama productions and assembly programs are other activities that are a part of Language arts. The library, the heart of any good college is a particularly strong ally of the Language Arts. Northern's library shelves some 13, O00 books and figures reveal a circulation in- crease yearly. A new library building is under con- struction with completion date expected for the 1962 fall term.

CLYDE WILLIAMS, CHESTER GRIMM, AND CLIFFORD IARED The Industrial arts department found its own home for the first time in the fall of 1951 as the cabinet shop, printing, drafting and metal work were moved to their modern building. Additional electric arc welding was added to the curriculum. Expansion was soon necessary and the welding annex came to be in '56. Modern machines have been added to each shop, presenting a change from the exercise method of teaching to the modern construction. This new method places empha- sis on industrial production methods while maintaining a high standard of skills and craftsmanship in the cabinet and machine work. Drafting, stressing skill, speed and design in architectural and machine fields, is practiced by students in actual construc- tion. Two basic methods of printing with modern equipment, enable students to re- ceive practical experience in printing The Maverick and various activity programs. A Future program of growing with changing times, with additional up-to-date equipment and modern materials is being pursued. Northern ranks at the top in athletics. Since 1952 the football team has finished either first, second or third in the Oklahoma Iuco Conference. Physical education at NOJC includes not only football, basketball, baseball, and track but also judo, golf, and physical fitness courses. Intramural basketball games give everyone a chance to get in the play.
