FOOTBALL The NOJC football squad finished their season with a 5-5-1 record to end up in third place in the conference. The Mavericks coached by London successfully placed three play- ers, Gresset, Wade, and Cooper on the all-conference team with Bill Butler and Laird receiving honorable mention. Blessed with speed and tremendous drive the Mavs never gave up their will to win as they bounced from a hard defeat handed by Cameron, National Iuco champions, to blast Eastern ASLM 23-7 With all but five of the uniforms filled by freshmen Northern developed their potential powers gaining confi- dence and poise with every game. Congatulations for a fine season! Q BA SKETBALL Coach Clane Kirtley 's rookie basketballers finished their season in a fifth place tie with Connors. Coach Kirt- ley 's crew began their season by winning third place in the Miami juco tourney. Orville Mills the only returning letterman from last year 's squad finished in ninth place in conference scoring. Records can never show the real story of a team. We must go behind the scenes to the hours of sweat and hustle exhibited by the squad, the hours of triumph and discouragement, but it all adds up to the thrill of being a Maverick. TRACK - BASEBALL As this yearbook reached the press, the track squad was in training for the spring meets and baseball was in the organizational stages. Three returning baseball lettermen, pitchers Bill Butler and Virgil Ackerson and outfielder Don Greene, made up the nucleus of a good potential team. Possible players at this writing are Weaver Forrest, Bill Wheeler, Elmo Butler, Ric Craft, Jack Bartlett, Ronnie Kincade, and I. D. Shipman. Northern is scheduled to hold the National Regional baseball tournament with the winner going to the National Juco tournament at Grand Junction, Colo. NOJC baseballers finished second to Northeastern in the Oklahoma Iuco Conference for 1961. Frank McDuffee, single returning track letterman and mile:-halfrniler will be competing in the Juco Conference along with Bill Plummer, Bob Vincent, Richard Pollock, Wilson Ailey. McDuffe ended the 1961 season 4th in the conference. The tracksters, hurdlers and jumpers anticipate-seven eight dual meets this spring climaxed by the State tourname at Claremore. r alt-, 1 ,--9 , ,. ' 0 F' r X ' 1 I 1 n
