1953-1954 was another busy year for the mem- bers of the music department and those students who participated in the large groups. The Marching Band performed at all home foot- ball games and the Pep Band provided music at the home basketball games. A new idea was initiated during the football season when several high school bands were featured during the halves of the games. A total of 12 different bands, numbering almost 700 students participated in this First Annual High School Band Day. During the first semester, the traditional Christ- mas Concert was presented on Sunday, December 13. to a large, appreciative audience. The College Choir and the Northern Community Symphony Orchestra shared the concert. The Fifth Annual Klef Klub Snow- ball was held on Friday evening, lanuary 15, in the Lee Hall Ballroom. Five different dance orchestras provided the music for dancing, A String Ensemble, a Hillbilly Polka Group, a 14-piece Dance Band, a small be-bop combo and closing with the College Little Symphony Orchestra. The Collegiate Chorale and several vocal soloists were featured during the evening's dancing. The College Concert Band performed twice in Ianuary. An evening concert was presented on lanu- ary 19. The other appearance was during the day as a student assembly program. During the Spring term. the Concert Band appeared in an evening concert and traveled to Iron Mountain, Kingsford, Norway. Menominee and Stephenson for tour concerts in the high schools. The College Choir and the Northern Community Symphony Orchestra presented a concert together on April 6. On May 27 the Collegiate Chorale ape peared with the Northern Community Symphony Orchestra which also featured Phyllis Porter, pianist, William Savola, violinist. and Iohn Calo, tenor. These soloists were accompained by the orchestra. The annual spring tour of the College Little Symphony Orchestra, Collegiate Chorale. and varied soloists was taken in the Copper County area of the Upper Peninsula. The Collegiate Chorale had a busy schedule performing at banquets and concerts. The group traveled to Chicago during the mid-semester vacation to see and hear several outstanding musical performances. The year closed with student recitals featuring Edgar Holmgren, David Laakso, lames Ozzello, Phyl- lis Porter, and William Savola, instrumentalists, and lohn Calo, Robert Kline, and David Stimac, vocalists. During the Baccalaureate and Commencement Grad- uation Exercises, the College Choir, Orchestra, solo- ists and ensembles were presented.
