The 19534954 version of the Northern Michigan College of Education Wildcats took the floor for the first time on December 9. Before the season was over. ten victories had been rung up against only six defeats. Suomi, 665 Aircraft, Mission House, and the Uni- versity of Mexico were all soundly trounced. by the Cats before the boys ran in on the Tech Huskies. The trip up to Houghton was long and took a lot out of the boys, because their first loss was administered. Rebounding quickly, the Cats trounced North- land and the Service boys before bumping into Eau Claire. The boys from the Beer State simply had too much height, and they tipped the fighting Cats t0 their second loss. Semester time, and the annual trip to the south- land: results, one win and three losses. The Cats were dumped three straight times by close scores before bouncing back to tromp Aurora College quint. Com- ing north again, the Wildcats gained revenge by tipping Ferris Institute. Tech came to Northern-and they went--with a win. Wins over Northland and Suomi climaxed a very good season. Probably the highlight of the whole season was Northern's first victory in international competition. On lanuary 8 the Wildcats met and defeated the University of Mexico. Half-time ceremonies included the presentation of the key to the City of Marquette by the Mayor to the Mexican team. Speaking excel- lent English, the captain of the team thanked every- one for the very friendly welcome, and said that it was the most cordial reception his team had received in the United States. 131
