Football X x With four of its seven games played away and the switch back to the one platoon system the 1953 football season iound the Wildcats one of the most traveled teams in the school's history. Opening the season against Oshkosh they ran up the highest score ot the season, 36 to 24. They traveled next to Ohio Northern University and there failed to cash in on several scoring op- portunities. The final score read even up 7-7. The next game was at home, against the boys irom Houghton. Before the Cats realized that they were playing on a football field they were on the short end of an 18-0 deficit. It really looked hope- less. The hall ended 18-6. But the team proved it had the determination to win. The second half Northern completely outplayed Tech. Northem scored again. The scoreboard registered 18-12. It stayed that way till the final 12 seconds. when Northern plowed over to tie the score 18 all. Now the vital extra point. lt could mean a win. The ball was snapped: everyone expected a kick. The whole Tech team came rushing to block the ball. But instead, Gingrass sailed o perfect pass into the outstretched hands of Axel Anderson. Final score 19-18. Final result - Pandamoniuml Feeling invincible after defeating Tech, the Cats traveled to Big Rapids. There. a scrappy Ferris team stunned Northern and the team re- turned on the short end of a 7-2 score. Realizing that a team can't live on the laurels of yesterday they geared themselves properly and in succes- sive weekends polished off Northland. Bethel, and Mission House College. The season ended with a 5 won. 1 lost, and 1 tied record. As 9 127
