' enmaa' ART CLUB The Art Club, which is composed of art majors and minors, has as its main purpose the getting together of students with a mutual interest in art, so that they may become better acquainted with each other as well as with the various phases ot art. Much of the c1ub's activity this year has been concerned with Art Alumni Scholarship, which was begun last year. This scholarship enables the art major with the highest scholastic standing to better attend Q summer school session at Northern to further his art studies. Northern is attemp. ting to have an artist-in-residence during each summer's session: therefore enabling the Art Alumni Scholarship recipient to enroll in a painting course from a noted artist such as Aaron Bohord, who was artist-in-residence during the summer of 1953. Some of the other activities undertaken by the club during its meetings this year were designing to music and experimenting with the mixed medig technique introduced by Mr. Bohrod last summer. The club always has a social meeting at the end of the school year, at which time the graduating art majors are honored. GIRLS' GRGANIZATION OF CAREY HALL Carey Hall has once again gone through another year with much success. The social season this year was initiated with decorations, a float, Open House, and the tea for Homecoming. This year we have had regular monthly special dinners, accompanied by quests and appropriate decorations. The Christmas Caroling Party, followed by a dance and refreshments, was enjoyed by all. In April a tea was held for the faculty and their wives. We again held Open House on March 30 for Senior Day. The second semester at Carey Hall was climaxed with the annual spring dinner at which the new officers were introduced and initiated to their offices. This brought to a close another year under the capable guidance and cooper- ation of Mrs. Iames Sherman. Mr. Forest Roberts is advisor to the group. The team took part in the tournament held at Northwestern University February 13 and came out with a high rating. Teams were rated not only on points brought out during discussion or debate but also on the manner of presentation. On March 12 and 13 the debaters participated in the annual Delta Sigma Rho Discussion and Debate Conference, held at the University of Wisconsin. Thirty-three colleges and universities were represented at the conference. On Northern's affirmative team were Glenda Paris and Byron Renz, and on the negative were Don Hakala and David Nelson. The national question for dis- cussion was Resolved: That the United.States Should Adopt a Policy of Free Trade. Byron Renz won first place in the men's division of the Radio Newscasting event at the Delta Sigma Rho Conference. Their aim is to promote and back many types of activities at the college. Some of their perennial duties have included ushering, collecting tickets, and passing out programs at school func- tions. Each year the Club collects money at one basketball game for the March of Dimes fund. This year the N Club sponsored two special track meets, one of which was a Conference meet of nearby colleges. In the fall the Club also was host to high school football players at a banquet. Irma Leppanen, Nancy McKevitt, Helen Williams. STUDENT CDUNCIL As the council is the voice oi the students in the government of the school, each class elects three members to the council for the year. The Council strives to promote better relations between the students and faculty, and works to improve the school as a whole. In their attempt to accomplish this, the council became a member of the National Student's Association. This membership was the result of a trip taken by some council members to Ann Arbor in December, 1951. ln December of the next year, the council took an active part in the N.S,A. convention at Detroit. Activities of the'year included a pre-Homecoming pep session which was a Kangaroo Court held for the freshmen as a conclusion of the freshman initia- tion program, sponsored by the council. Each year the council has a dinner at the close of the second semester for both the old and the new members. FRONT ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: Barbara Hassenqer, Iiak Tan, Maxine Baab, Norine Cleary. MASQUERS One of the most active organizations on campus is Northern's dramatic club, more widely known as the Masquers. Each semester the club's activities center around the presentation of a play for the pleasure of both the student body and the community. To make a play a success any Masquer can tell you it takes the com- bined efforts ot everyone working on the set, costumes, properties, lighting, sound, and many other committees. In the fall the club presented one night's entertainment in the form of three one-act plays, Curse You, Jack Dalton, The Devil and Daniel Webster, and Three Pills in a Bottle. The featured highlight of the second semester was the presentation of the Greek tragedy, Antigone, A special treat for the stu- dent body was the program written, produced, and acted by the members of Masquers. t An annual party in the spring plus the break down parties after the final curtain has closed add to the lighter side of the club's program. To revise an old adage, belonging to Masquers means, lt's pleasant work and a lot of play. asquers in Action V5 QQ, Joe-'V Q GON- N9 OC' 'b Q9w 0 Qwfqowowmqh .NNQ NQQJNQQ ' , .- Q Q 'J -e Q Q, w ' . After recovering from that ordeal, it was simple to reach for the nearest picture and begin identifying the people. Or perhaps one could begin smearing rubber-glue on the hands Gnd, quite incidentally, on the pictures. A total of 12 different bands, numbering almost 700 students participated in this First Annual High School Band Day. During the first semester, the traditional Christ- mas Concert was presented on Sunday, December 13. to a large, appreciative audience. The College Choir and the Northern Community Symphony Orchestra shared the concert. The Fifth Annual Klef Klub Snow- ball was held on Friday evening, lanuary 15, in the Lee Hall Ballroom. Five different dance orchestras provided the music for dancing, A String Ensemble, a Hillbilly Polka Group, a 14-piece Dance Band, a small be-bop combo and closing with the College Little Symphony Orchestra. The Collegiate Chorale and several vocal soloists were featured during the evening's dancing. The College Concert Band performed twice in Ianuary. An evening concert was presented on lanu- ary 19. Opening the season against Oshkosh they ran up the highest score ot the season, 36 to 24. They traveled next to Ohio Northern University and there failed to cash in on several scoring op- portunities. The final score read even up 7-7. The next game was at home, against the boys irom Houghton. Before the Cats realized that they were playing on a football field they were on the short end of an 18-0 deficit. It really looked hope- less. The hall ended 18-6. But the team proved it had the determination to win. The second half Northern completely outplayed Tech. Northem scored again. The scoreboard registered 18-12. It stayed that way till the final 12 seconds. when Northern plowed over to tie the score 18 all. Now the vital extra point. lt could mean a win. The ball was snapped: everyone expected a kick. The whole Tech team came rushing to block the ball. But instead, Gingrass sailed o perfect pass into the outstretched hands of Axel Anderson. Final score 19-18. Final result - Pandamoniuml Feeling invincible after defeating Tech, the Cats traveled to Big Rapids. There. a scrappy Ferris team stunned Northern and the team re- turned on the short end of a 7-2 score. Realizing that a team can't live on the laurels of yesterday they geared themselves properly and in succes- sive weekends polished off Northland. Bethel, and Mission House College. The 19534954 version of the Northern Michigan College of Education Wildcats took the floor for the first time on December 9. Before the season was over. ten victories had been rung up against only six defeats. Suomi, 665 Aircraft, Mission House, and the Uni- versity of Mexico were all soundly trounced. by the Cats before the boys ran in on the Tech Huskies. The trip up to Houghton was long and took a lot out of the boys, because their first loss was administered. Rebounding quickly, the Cats trounced North- land and the Service boys before bumping into Eau Claire. The boys from the Beer State simply had too much height, and they tipped the fighting Cats t0 their second loss. Semester time, and the annual trip to the south- land: results, one win and three losses. The Cats were dumped three straight times by close scores before bouncing back to tromp Aurora College quint. Com- ing north again, the Wildcats gained revenge by tipping Ferris Institute. Tech came to Northern-and they went--with a win. Wins over Northland and Suomi climaxed a very good season. Probably the highlight of the whole season was Northern's first victory in international competition. On lanuary 8 the Wildcats met and defeated the University of Mexico. Half-time ceremonies included the presentation of the key to the City of Marquette by the Mayor to the Mexican team. Speaking excel- lent English, the captain of the team thanked every- one for the very friendly welcome, and said that it was the most cordial reception his team had received in the United States. 131 Gildo Canale Northern 81 Northern 107 Northern 84 Northern 80 Northern 75 RECORD Suomi Air Corps Mission House U. of Mexico Michigan Tech Corny Sochay Bob Savera Harvey Fletcher 132 Northern 65 Northland Northern 89 Air Corps Northern 83 Eau Claire Northern 6 l Ferris Northern 61 Vincennes Northern 72 Oakland City Northern 82 Aurora Northern 90 Ferris Northern 70 Michigan Tech Northern 97 Northland Northern 105 Suomi 1 302 1070 Spencer Carlson -ww. 1 ,.t.,,,,.,,,..,, , 1. t, ra -Q ill.
