Dedication lYhen our pines were young' ancl our campus a forest, there liverl arounrl us a miglity lnclian tribe, the Chippewas. 'l'he moon saw them at war and play, ancl still remembers. 'l'he lake knew the feel of their canoes, the soft splash of their paslrlles. 'l'he pines knew their sorrows ancl joys, and prnteetecl them from their enemies. Now all is gone. The moon no longer hears their songs, the pines are goneg the lake is eolrl and grey, and no canoes rifle its snrfaee. The mighty hearts of the Chippewas rest nncler blankets of neeclles, where, in spring, the arbutus hufls. They struggle no more with nature. The olcl orcler has chanfsgecl. 'lfhe last to face the setting' sun was Charles Kawhaw- gain, a Chippewa eliieftain, emhoclying' all the strength, no- bility anrl pricle of the lnflian raee. A truer, finer man never sailecl these waters, never walked these forests. Thus it is Fitting, that we, the nsurpers of the home of his race. shonlrl flerlieate this hook to Charles liawhawgam ancl to the Chippewa trihe.

Foreword VVe live in a land of past romance, where once the wild bear leisurely turned the stones on a sunny hill- side, seeking' for antsg where once the Indians hid hehincl the trees to trap the wily deer: where men have hewn away the forest and made history. This is all before us, about us, meeting our eyes at every step. VVith this in mind the Editors of the Kawbawgain de- cided to use an Indian theme in this book, perpetuating the Indian traditions.
