MICHIGAN KAW'BAW-GANJV LAS TCHIEI' or THE Cm PPEWA9. 4 Dedication lYhen our pines were young' ancl our campus a forest, there liverl arounrl us a miglity lnclian tribe, the Chippewas. 'l'he moon saw them at war and play, ancl still remembers. 'l'he lake knew the feel of their canoes, the soft splash of their paslrlles. 'l'he pines knew their sorrows ancl joys, and prnteetecl them from their enemies. Now all is gone. The moon no longer hears their songs, the pines are goneg the lake is eolrl and grey, and no canoes rifle its snrfaee. The mighty hearts of the Chippewas rest nncler blankets of neeclles, where, in spring, the arbutus hufls. They struggle no more with nature. The olcl orcler has chanfsgecl. 'lfhe last to face the setting' sun was Charles Kawhaw- gain, a Chippewa eliieftain, emhoclying' all the strength, no- bility anrl pricle of the lnflian raee. A truer, finer man never sailecl these waters, never walked these forests. Thus it is Fitting, that we, the nsurpers of the home of his race. shonlrl flerlieate this hook to Charles liawhawgam ancl to the Chippewa trihe. Foreword VVe live in a land of past romance, where once the wild bear leisurely turned the stones on a sunny hill- side, seeking' for antsg where once the Indians hid hehincl the trees to trap the wily deer: where men have hewn away the forest and made history. This is all before us, about us, meeting our eyes at every step. VVith this in mind the Editors of the Kawbawgain de- cided to use an Indian theme in this book, perpetuating the Indian traditions. In the fall of 192-L we entered the halls of Northern a group of grinning' lireshmen. We admit we have made many mistakes. ,Ns Freshmen we were often found in the wrong' place at the wrong time. llut, however, our develop- ment has been slow and steady. We have taken the initiative in many school ac- tivities. Our lirst l'rom convinced the upper classmen of our social ability J which has constantly increased with experience. XVe proved our musical and dramatic ability to the school in the spring' of our Sophomore year, when we pre- sented l1ulbul, a musical comedy. lts linancial success has enabled us to pre sent the school a memorial. ln all athletic activities. wc also did our share ii supplying' material. 'l'hc last achievement of the Class of N128 has been that o instituting' a school pin. 1 F These, however. are only a few of the high spots in our college career. Ile- siclcs these memories we will always carry with us the inspiration which o teachers have given us, and the lasting' friendships we have made at Northern A. A. ll. Page Thirty ll l' . C. lfts enrollment is one of the strongest proofs that Nortliern is being' consiclerecl more ,ancl more as a college than as a Normal School. All the members are work- ing either for A. ll. or ll. S. degrees. ancl there are no three-year Life Certifi- cate people, as there will be in future classes. Among' their other accomplishments this year, the juniors, in conjunction with the Seniors, put on the successful junior-Senior I'rom on February 10th. Then, also, during the winter term, the men won the points for basketball in the intra-mural contest. i'Vive l'hieme! shoulcl be the cry, it seems, of any junior who believes in the effectiveness of the horseshoe or four-leaf clover. The ma- jority, however, are rather inelinecl to pin their faith to their own cleverness and ability. The measure was likewise passecl by the class that, in the future, the Prom should be given by the Juniors alone. unassistecl by the Seniors. Since the in- fant-in-number upper classmen have become lull-grown, it is felt that each class is now able to stand on its own feet, ancl no longer neerls the support of the other. With the opening of the college year, Northern's coaches found six lettermen back,-llemr, ,l-lardimon, Hillberg, Ronberg, lJeCoolc and Collins, around whom was to be built the 1927 eleven. Several reserve men re- turned along with a group of yearlings. ln the season's first game with Stevens Point, our boys were outweighed and outelassed. but they managed to come out with a tie score, after ,-Xrgall ran 55 yards with a pass from Zambrowitz. Northern played host to the Michigan Teeli after the Oshkosh game and won, 33-T. The first half was doggy, and the visitors counted first when their fleet quarterback received a punt in midfield and raced through the North- ir only touchdown, but the Olive and tiold eleven matched the score on lJet,'ool:'s touchdown. A feature of almost ev- ery game was his excellent punting, and his backing' up of the line was pretty to watch, lt has often been said that his kicking' ranked with that done in the larger uni- versities, while his defensive tactics were always due for commendation. X'Vhen the next season comes around Coach l-ledgcock will find a man to take his place, but it can well be said that that place will not be filled as well as it was by jerry Hemr. 1-,KN 'x RONIHERLI ln the first game of the season and in every tilt fol- lowing, oftentimes despite injuries, the man who showed the most grit of any player on the squad was Ronberg. In the Oshkosh game, his most brilliant of the season, he took a great amount of battering' and was injured to a point where another fellow would have quit, but he never gave up, no matter what the odds.
