'X The Negative Intercollegiate Team 'Twas well that llenito Mussolini was thousands of miles away when the Northern Normal negative team debated Central on February 9. The dictator would have had a sad trip home, pondering over his punctured governmental principles, for the question debated was, Resolved, That this house indorse the governmental principles of Mussolini. The debate took place on the home platform. February 9, before a house of 600 interested students of government. Mr. George Campbell, of Oshkosh Nor- mal, was the judge, and he was convinced that the negative had shown the un- desirable traits of the opposition's case. The team was composed of Emerson Johnston of Marquette, Dorothy Gar- rity of Escanaba, and George T. Havican of Marquette. Eda VVhitford, of Mus- kegon Heights, was the alternate. For two years, Miss Garrity and Mr. Havican have debated Central on the negative, 'and each year they have been spurred on by one of the sehool's senior leade1's, Mr. Zerbel in '26 and Mr. Johnston in '27. Second year debaters are awarded gold keys, emblematic of scholastic achieve- ment, while the first year debaters are given letters. Mr. Meyland coached the team in a very capable manner. The school's interest in debating must be mentioned. It has found out that much worthwhile material can be obtained at debates. In the last two years, the Communist and Fascist governments have been discussed. l-Roth of these ques- tions are of international importance and every teacher should be well acquainted with them. But what of '28? Miss Garrity and Mr. Johnston have accepted teaching positions, while Mr. Havican will return for a third year on the platform. Miss Whitford and Mr. Godin will also return, and, with the other members of the affirmative and new recruits, a strong team will represent Northern in 1928. It would be a great reward for this interest in debating to have Northern join the State Debating League. Q? it QP Q it 25. Page One Hundred Eighty-four
