Lindley-Murray School Restoration gig N g.,..-I , 1 A Few Feet Into The Past l I l l Two years ago an ambitious group of students, advised by lVlr. Thomas Donmoyer, started working on a project for our na- tion's 200th birthday, the Lindley Murray Schoolhouse. The first order of business was to secure a iease from the state of Pennsylvania for the property. This procedure became ong and drawn out but after a year of pressure and determination, , t1e students' goal became a reality. T T wen the real work began. The students worked on a volunteer basis, and a I funds and supplies were received from donations. Using the avai able resources, the students practically rebuilt the entire bui ding. As the work continues, plans are being made concerning what will be done with twe property once restoration is complete. The best suggestion so far seems to be to use the building as a prac- tical learning area for ntermediate Unit 13, where all 5th grade classes may come to actua ly experience history instead of just reading about it. The classes at t1e school would be taught by , the students who helped to rebuild it, and wou d consist of pre- - - e -fe sentations, and tape recordings of people who actua ly went to school there or in a similar building. The school house will eventually be leased to twe Lebanon County Historical Preservation Trust and will be open to t1e gen- eral public. ff ?si52,,Sa 2 2 WK 5 ff 1711 5 s 1,7 4- C C of TW inz3l1cfX'LEiQ s Watch out readers! You are about to behold one of the eight wonders of the world--The Student's Creative Corner! lyou thought there were only seven didn't you'?l On the next few pages your eyes will feast on artwork, poems and stories such as you have never seen! And the most wonderful part of this is that they are all works of Northern Lebanon students. Creative students at NL rarely have a chance to exhibit their art- work and display the products of their written creativity, so we have devoted this section of the 1976 ARCHIVE to them. 36 Grandpa Hunting is a sport which quiet's one's nerves. How pleasent it is to get up at 5:30 in morning, baggy eyed, grogy and miserable and to your surprise you find out it's raining. You have breakfast finally after coaxing yourself through the art of getting on all gear. It's like a jig- zaw puzzle or a new item that you buy without in- struction for assembly of parts. You're finally finished and are now driving into mountain, stumble up the mountain, find a good spot. At the same time the pouring down rain, dripping down your back, soaks you from head to toe. Finally after restless hours of waiting, a twelve point buck walks up to you. You try shooting at the deer, but you forgot the bullets at home, so as frus- trated as you are, you hit the deer over the head, crack the stock on your brand new gun and get tram- pled into the mud by the angered deer. So, you walk down the mountain, get into the car, throw your gun on the back seat, but as you're ready to leave, you find out you're stuck in the mud. So after an hour and a half of trying to get out of the mud, the car goes out of control, rams a tree, and you 're stuck all over again. A half an hour, you final- ly get off the mountain, and start looking for a ga- rage to fix the dent in the fender that's causing the wheel to rub. After half an hour, a little joint on the steering falls out and you wreck, so you walk letting Flower yellow, blooming, sweet innocent, fragrant, thorns, wilting dying, weeds, smelling Hayfever America home, hotdogs, freedom eagle, red, white, blue, violence drugs, pollution, confusion Continent Fangs creeping, striking, alleys hunting, preditor, lone, purring, pouncing yarn, little girl, soft Kitten the car sit there. So you go hom e, take a shower and go to bed thinking: what a beautiful day! Lara Rohrer over the frost-bitten ground Chris Zellers howling at the nights full moon liathy Arnold 37 The Adventure of the Missing Bullet By J.E. Payne ipatterned after the style of Sir Arthur Conan Doylel Wits, Watson, gather your wits, and surely you will see the answer to this problem. This problem was a problem of a man being shot at close quarters. Simple enough, he did assuredly have the bulletwound. What the prob- lem confronting us today was, though, there were no powder burns, nor was there any bullet. The signs of the bullet entering the body were clear enough, but it did not exit. I did not see any answer to the problem, and I made no qualms in informing Mr. Sherlock Holmes Idid not. Then we shall gather out possi- bles, and by process of elimination, cast off the impossibles. Sir Charles Hainsworth, a rising young member of Parilment, was most definitly shot. That much is clear. But where then is the wretched bullet? Was it extracted by the murder- er? Possibly, but then he would have to have stepped in the large pool of blood which was surrounding the body. Then at least we would have footsteps leading from the body. Therefore this possibility may be disposed of. Did the bullet leave the body through the process of momentum? Again, Watson, most possible, if not for the fact that there are no signs of it exiting from the body nor is there a bullet hole in any of the walls of Sir Charles modest Bachelor flat. This possibility may also be elimi- nated. Holmes, Isaid, I tire of these mind-games. Inevitably, every- time a puzzle is presented to us, you almost immediatly know the answer. Yet, you continue to bufuddle me, so that Iadmit my intellect is nowhere near your genius. Ishall admit it Holmes. Iwould gladly shout it from the roofs of London, if you would just make the puzzle a bit more clear, so that one so slow as Imight have a chance to make a deduction leading hopefully to the same solu- tion you have already discovered. At this my friend's face grew slack, as he did indeed enjoy his games. Even in the pale illumination of our gas-light, intensified to-a small extent by the street-lanterns outside the window, I was almost positive I could see a look -of-amaze- ment in his face. Alright, Watson, said he, turn- ing toward the window and mocking interest in the passing carriages on Baker Street, I shall do just that. On my desk you shall find a letter written to me by the manager of the Winter Games in nearby Sussex. Read it carefully, Dear Watson. Don 't miss a single word, for the answer is there, but you can't expect it to leap out at you as a toad would. I moved to his desk and picked up the letter delivered by post just this morning. It read: Dear Mr. Holmes, Following your interesting career in London, we are offering you this invitation. As you are no doubt aware, every year we ask some local person of high esteem to act as our Grand Marshall for the Winter Games. This year the honor falls upon you. Should you accept, some of your duties would be: judging of the ice sculptures, a very lovely displayg preparing a menu for the opening- night banquet iyou would be allowed to present any delicacy you wishlp and riding in a private hansome at the head of the Opening Day Parade. I then put the letter down and turned toward the Detective. I'm sorry, Holmes, but Ijust don't... Watson, you amaze me with your act of ignorance. Surely you must have deduced...Come here, Watson. Quickly! Isprinted to the window, and gazed at the spot his bony finger was directed to. Those children, Watson. What are they sliding and playing on? Ice, Holmes. But ice is not so rare in an English winter. It forms anywhere there is water. If this is some type of clue, I am very much afraid that its meaning is lost to me. Very well, Watson. Get your ser- vice revolver and a pitcher of water and follow me. Bundle up Watson. We're going out. Bundle up was right. Snow had just fallen earlier this morning, and the temperature was still consider- ably below freezing. Nevertheless, ten minutes later we were standing on the snowcovered sidewalk in front of 221B Baker Street. Now Watson, before Ibegin, let us go back 24 hours, and re-tell the story of the murder again. Sir Charles Hainsworth and his butler were enjoying a peaceful evening at home. After drawing Sir Charles' bath, the Butler left to meet a friend of his at a pub. When the Butler returned, Sir Charles was dead. The Butler claims he was only gone for a maximum of one hour. Your revolver, Watson. Is she loaded? Good, then. The story on the previous page is -IS contineud. What happened? Nlake a deduc- tion. Then, to find out if you're correct, pick up the remainder of this story in room 77 for a mere 5042. The story continues for far more than one paragraph, so buy your copy today. Rambling. . . . . . The airplane that was finally chosen was a Piper Tri-Pacer PA-22-135 which needed repair. After th h l ' ' ' e sc oo board O.K. d it, the project got under way. The objective was for the class to restore the plane to flying condition, take flying lessons, a pilots test, then fly the plane themselves. The class learned about aerodyriamics, what the different parts were called and how they were used to control the plane. The seniors involved are: Greg Eckenroth Jay Beam, Jeff Bohn, Greg Walborn Mike Peters M k 1 I ar Albright, Steve Daubert, Mark Yordy, Jim Carnathan t and wo girls--Lara Rohrer and Karen Enders. It consists of a pond and a meadow stream which are located on approxi- mately seven acres of land. It is located west of the school next to the girl 's softball field. The pond is small and will be eventually stocked with fish. There are plans for the planting of trees and shrubs in the spring, but some of the areas will be left to grow wild to encourage l wildlife and birds to nest there. Nature trails will also be de- veloped. Students and teachers are invited to help plan the area. Other plans for the fu- ture include the building of a shelter for outdoor classes. The Outdoor Educational Area is not restricted to just science - teachers, but may be used by any teachers in the high school.
