Ninztrm UR-azntxj -two R. JQHN VV. COOK, the subject of this brief disserta- tion, has had a most unusual record as a teacher and administrator of public education in the State of Illinois. For more than a half century his keen mind and wonderful vision were brought to bear upon the solution of the most far-reaching and most difficult problems of education dur- ing the latter quarter of the nineteenth century and the First quarter of the twentieth. He touched the lives, the hearts, and minds of hundreds of men and women who came direct- ly in contact with his great personality. He saw the light revealed to him as very few have ever been able to see it. He had the unique power of interpreting times and condi- tions, people and situations because of this rare gift. The place which he made during this long period of service is so unique as to leave him almost without competition among the great souls whose lives have been spent in public educa- tion. The institution at DeKalb, whose birth and develop-- ment, Whose direction and growth he stimulated, will always be his debtor. It is, therefore, a great privilege to record this expression showing the depth of appreciation which his friends, associates, and acquaintances feel for him. -I. STANLEY BROWN.
