A North- ern student has a large selection from which to choose in the areas of literature, composi- tion, and reading. Both Compass, Northern ' s newspaper, and Spirit offer English credit. HM| , Port Huron Northern is proud to show you our own radio station! The General Manager of WORW is Mr. Robert Trapp. He is a speech teacher and also teaches our broadcasting class. All students in the broadcasting class work for and pass their FCC third class license. The students learn to run the station and are the officers themselves. WORW has a long list of students that have gone on in the communications field. We are extremely proud of these students. Radio station WORW is non-commercial and educational radio. We serve the Blue Water Area on a frequency of 91 .9 on the FM dial. Be sure to tune us in. American history is a required class in the eleventh grade. In this class one learns about the history of our country. It gives the student a better understanding of his her country and how it came to be independent. Civics is a required course at Port Huron Northern. It is to be taken in the ninth grade year. In this class the students learn about the working of the government system and a little about economics. Social Studies Learning To Be Sociable It All Adds P.O.D. (Problems of Democracy) is a re- quired class for the seniors at P.H.N. In this class, the students learn about the different forms of government and collect news- points, a technique invented by the teachers in which the students can learn about the problems of today and better understand what is going on. In P.O.D. , students also learns about the stock market, city govern- ment, and school board issues. 24 Our math department at P.H.N. offers a wide variety of courses. Although only two years is required, there are enough courses for a student to take math the full four years. As in some of the other depart- ments, there are many levels of math courses so that each stu- dent may choose the course best suited to him her. 25 Smile! You’re On Candid Camera 26 27 Science The Science Department, headed by Mr. Thomas Blackney, includes interesting sub- jects that anyone with an inquisitive mind would go nuts over. From flying high with aerospace to becoming a shutterbug with photography, PHN students learn the mean- ing of trial and error. 31 We feel that physical education is a very important class. Thus, we offer a variety of classes f or both boys and girls. In your freshman year, two semesters of phys. ed. are required. There is a choice between team and individual sports. For the boys, grades 10-12, there is weights and agility, ad. weights and agility, physical fitness, and gym leader. For the girls, grades 10-12, there is nutrition and body contouring 1, 2, 3, 4, leadership training, and gym leader. Special Ed. Extra attention is given to the special edu- cation classes. Students with specific prob- lems receive individualized help by trained personnel, where hearing disabilities, emo- tional upsets, and other difficulties are over- come. The main purpose of the hearing impaired room is to provide a resource room for the hearing impaired students who attend Northern. The goal is to integrate the students into as many regular classes as possible and have them come to the room for help. When they feel there is a class the students cannot take without failing, they are taught the class at a pace more appropriate to their abilities. Our facilities at Northern cover many possible career choices. Our vocational education program of- fered three main courses, auto mechanics, drafting occupations, and electronical occupations. In addition, the industrial arts pro- gram offered a variety of classes for students interested in woods, metals, and mechanical drawing. Business Ed. Our Business Ed. Department at P.H.N. has a wide variety of classes from a 2 hr. clerical block class to business English shorthand, typing 1, 2, 3, 4. Also, there is personal typing. They Band Together Last year the principle idea for band was “progress” and “progress” has been made. This was demonstrated during the marching season when students had to attend extra practices outside of class. During concert season, the two major bands, Concert and Wind Ensemble, par- ticipated in sectionals, adding attention to individual instruments at alternating times. 38 Artists Of Tomorrow Get Practice Today! Art class is different. It’s not like history or algebra. You have a chance to use your imagination and can experiment with new ideas. The helpful instructors, Mr. Taggert and Mrs. LaBeau, are always willing to help you with your problems or in choosing which art class is for you. This list includes, jewelry, drawing, painting, stained glass, art 1 2, commercial design, and others. 40 What’s Cooking? The Home Economics Department this year has taught many girls and boys how to cook, plan a meal, set a table, and understand nutrition value all in one semester classes. They also have classes to teach students how to sew, embroider, and crochet. All of the home economic courses are one se- mester. Join The People Who Join The Skill Center The Skill Center is a facility located on Range Road in Marysville, Michigan. It has many different clases in it that are very much like a real job setting. Some of the classes are: Steno-Clerical — a class where the students study to be a secr etary. They learn all about filing, typing, transcribing, and much more. Accounting Computing — students learn all of the things about being a CPA, cashier, and bank teller. Data Processing — students learn how to be a computer programmer, data processor. Health Care — students learn all about the parts of the body and things about how the body functions. This is a class for students going into nursing. Auto Body — students learn how to improve their skill at working on the body of a car, painting, bumping, etc. Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning — students learn to find out how these machines work and how to put the machines together. Foods — Primarily for people interested in food management. The Skill Center is open to all 10, 11, and 12 grade students who must apply and then be chosen according to interest and potential 42 Co-Op: In And Out Of School Students at PHN earn by learning in the form of co-op. Mr. Gable, the co-op instruc- tor, sees that students get jobs while getting credits. In the end, the student has received on the job training, credit by learning, and extra needed cash. The 1978 Varsity Football team ended their season with a spectacular 6-3 win-loss record. The team expected a lot — and why not? With three members receiving outstanding All-League Awards, the team didn’t need to be modest. Rod Arquette, Brian Bates, and Bob Yanik were the three muscle men to win those all-league awards. Senior Jeff East added to the powerful team his unique talent of catching flying pigskins. Using his talent, East set 4 records this year. Brian Bates was named as this year’s Most Valuable Play- er. 47 - P.H. Northern 27 - P.H. Northern 27 - P.H. Northern 12 - P.H. Northern 19 - P.H. Northern 22 - P.H. Northern 6 - P.H. We’ll miss her so very much, but remember her as such, a very beautiful girl, who gave us all much joy. And the good times that we shared, will show her that we cared, then and now ’cause we still do, just as friendship is anew. She’ll live with us in our hearts, with a smile for each day that starts, for as we all shall live, there will always be time to give. To this very special person indeed, who helped us when we were in need as many loving prayers are said, to Linda we pray all prayers instead.
