TOP early in the year, Mrs. Ann Dinnen was appointed to the Board. ROW: Mr. Martin E. Weiss, Mr. Elwin F. Hartwig, The Rev. F. A. Many seniors take advantage of School Board meetings to get some of their required newspoints for Problems of Democracy. These meetings are also open to the public. The seven members of the Port Huron Area District Board of Education meet regularly to discuss school policies for the entire school district. The Board is responsible for policy making, the approval of new personnel, appropria- tions of the budget, and expenditures. This year, the Board of Education had many time-consuming problems to consider. Negotiations were held with striking custodial crews and a settlement was finally reached. Members tackled the problem of the over-crowded school conditions. The Board also approved the new English curriculum introduced at Northern this year. The many hours members give to Board work is greatly appreciated. 13

TOP ROW: Dr. Gerald DeGrow, Mr. William Pierce, Mr. Larry Manz, Mr. Andrew Pochodylo, Mr. Ronald Bradley, and Mr. James Neveaux. -« Dr. DeGrow Resigns to Accept New Post Dr. Gerald S. DeGrow, Superintendent of the Port Huron Area School District, executes ail Board decisions and school policies necessary to promote the best education possible for public school students. He also works closely with the Board of Education to aid in the solution of individual school problems. After serving as Director of Instruction here for six years. Dr. DeGrow was appointed Superintendent in 1965. Dr. DeGrow received a Doctor of Education degree in School Administration from the University of Michigan. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Michigan Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development and the American Association of School Administrators. In March 1971, Dr. DeGrow, with the Board ' s approval, accepted the position as Superintendent of Schools in Phoenix, Arizona, for the next school year. Northern’s students, faculty, and administrators appreciate Dr. DeGrow’s providing a well-rounded educational program. Best wishes for success in your new position. Dr. DeGrow! 12

Mr. Overly Succeeds By Meeting Students’ Needs Mr. James Overly, dedicated and determined in his job as Principal, has helped make Northern a great school for the students. Mr. Overly deeply believes in communication between students and faculty - his door is always open. As principal, Mr. Overly is responsible for PHN’s total activity. Beginning his year-round duty, he co-ordinates a well-balanced curriculum with available teachers and classroom space. He also supervises scheduling and budgeting, interviews teachers, and prepares PHN for Incoming Freshmen. Working closely with Department Chairmen, Grade Deans, and the Assistant Principal, Mr. Overly directs ail activities and rules of discipline. A Michigan State University graduate, Mr. Overly began his career In Grass Lake, Michigan, where he taught and served as Principal. After serving as assistant principal at PHHS, he became Northern’s first Principal in 1965. An avid sports fan, Mr. Overly can be seen at many of the sports activities cheering the Huskies to victory. Mr. Overly, always concerned with senior festivities, is especially interested in this year’s graduating events, as, his son Steven is a member of the Class of ’71 . Principal James E. Overly goes over some typing work with his secretary, Mrs. Clara Wellman. Mrs. Clara Wellman, Executive Secretary to Mr. Overly, efficiently handles a great volume of detail work. Her day Is always busy: preparing time sheets for non-certified personnel, keeping records on teacher absences and substitutes, and filling out eligibility forms for athletics. 14
