Board of Education Solves School Problems THE BOARD OF EDUCATION: Martin E. Weiss: Mrs. Alice McKinnon: Mrs. Ruth Douvas; A. B. Carlisle, President; Elwin F. Hartwig; William K. Gilbert, resigned; and H. J. Hazledine, M. D. The Port Huron Area School District Board of Education is the reason for the high standard of education in this area. The members meet twice a month to discuss school policies, business items, new personnel, budget appropriations, and expenditures for the school district. Many of the members have been on the Board of Education for several years. For instance, Mr. A. B. Carlisle was first elected in 1957. This year another member, Dr. Hazledine, was asked to join the nine-member Executive Board of the Michigan School Board Association. It is an or- ganization for school board members from all over Michigan. Other members of the Board are Martin E. Weiss, Mrs. Alice McKinnon, Mrs. Ruth Douvas, and Elwin F. Hartwig. William K. Gilbert resigned this year and the Board appointed Rev. Frederick Schoof to take his place. The Board of Education has the time-consuming job of maintaining and improving the education program in this community. It is a responsibility that the members do not take lightly. As a result, the Port Huron Area School District enjoys a high standard of education. 14
