' :fx l THE RECEIVING LINE, left to Right: Mr. and Mrs Dole Smith, Joyce Flohr and Barry Evans ond Carol Smith and La'ry Wiley, Starlight Memories was the theme for our Junior Prom, which was held at the Hershey Park Golf Club on May l7th. We entered the stone palace, met our principals and their wives and the senior class advisor, Mrs. Arm- strong, From eight until twelve, we danced, dreamed, and ate a delightful dinner, which consisted of not only turkey but also ham, scalloped potatoes, peas, cole slaw, apple sauce, coffee, milk, and ice cream. The tables were setting lengthwise in the room with center- pieces of white and blue stars surrounding ice blue candles, making an attractive setting. We danced until 9:30 and then our full course dinner was served. After eating for an hour the music and dancing continued and photographs were taken. As we floated around the room, the silver and blue stars sparkled not only in the decorations, but also in everyone's eyes. The musical melodies of The Will Fisher Orchestra filled the room, the patio, and our minds with memories of a most wonderful evening. At 12:00 the orchestra started playing the strains of Good- night, Sweetheart and the memorable evening was over. As we left we gazed over our shoulder for a long last look at the room, so it will be fixed in our memory forever. THE HEAD TABLE, Left to Right: Dotte Stevens, Bill Euricn, Bev Grove, Larry Lerevv, loah VXet:e', Ran Kearns Gloria Markle, Gerald Harbcld, Charlotte Lehman, and Ronald Wolf. The Entire Senior Play Cast Takes A Bow CHICKEN EVERY SUNDAY CHICKEN EVERY SUNDAY, our senior play, will long be remembered by everyone who aided in mak- ing the performances a success, The play was success- ful both tinancially and entertainingly, and the experiences enjoyed by the seniors in doing it will never be forgotten. The three act comedy, written by Julius J. and Philip G. Epstein, was presented on November 22 and 23. The play was centered around Emily Blachman, portrayed by Judy Nesbit, who converted the family home into a boarding house so that they can have a roof over their head and something to eat, when she suspects that her husband, Jim, played by Jim Richwine, will someday go broke even though he was president of the trolley line, bank, and laundry. At the boarding house many exciting things hap- pened-ramance, business transactions. fights and reconciliations. Miss Gilley lConnie Trostle , an old maid school teacher, had a visitor every night, who sneaked up the back stairs. lt happened to be Mr. Robinson played by CRudolph l-lopfi, and they were married secretly. Another romance was centered around Mr. Blachman's daughter, Rosemary, portrayed by Donna Bentz. Harold !'Bill Eurich , a boy from Boston, was very fond of her, but Jeftrey Lawson lDouglas Harteri, finally became her hero and future husband. Bill, Judy, and the editorial staff chose the style and theme of our book in the spring, and then during the summer Bill started the dummy Summertime wasn't all vacation for our business manager, Jim Richwine and the advertising editors, Beverly Grove and Rudy Hopf, either. They and their staff canvassed all merchants and businessmen in this area for advertisements. School started and then work really began. The copy editors, Joyce Flohr, Carol Smith, and Millie Krone, wrote copy and made assignments to their assistants, then passed it on to Arlene Coulson, head typist, who assigned it to her assistants, Circulation manager, Ruthie Nelson, and her assist- ants launched successful sales campaign in the fall, Art Editor, Lois Dagnell, and Circulation Manager, Ruth Nelson are pictured dictating to typist, Shirley Sheely, Charlotte Lehman Leviria Byers, crtd Jure Wenger. Shirley Greenfield, Stanley Arnold, and George Mum- mert kept track of scores and plays of all sport activities. Lois Dagnell did sketches for the editors and did all the art work. Never tiring was our advisor, Mrs. Taylor, who helped us through many straining days trying to meet the deadline. It was a difticult task trying to cram all the happy memories of our high school days between the two covers of this book, but, alas, it has ended, and we feel pleased and content with our results, PANORAMA BUSINESS STAFF: SEATED, L, to R,: Bev. Baker, FIRST VARSITY GRI Northern's first venture into the realm of varsity competition gives promise for the future. The small squad of thirty not only won two varsity games, but also played an undefeated J. V. schedule. Although the squad was small it was made up of boys who wanted to play foot- ball and were willing to play those hot August days of preschool practice. Cn Saturday September I4, the Bears iourneyed to Boiling Springs, defending champions of the Lower Susquehanna Conference, experience and depth were the deciding factors as the Bubblers won 31-6. The following week again demonstrated Northern's lack of manpower as the heat took its toll and Susquenita won Larry Klinedintz snap pass from Runk. E. Hoffman, D. Starnbaugh. STANDING: Mr. Abplanalp, Mr. Shaeffer, S. Arnold, L. Cocklin, T. Spahr, K. Dick, A. Stum, B. Bentz, R. Henry, B, Nicholson, R. Miller, Mr. Hoff, J. Cromer, Mr. Habig. DMEN MAKE GOOD 24-O. Bears 25-O in the first half, but were held score- less the second half. In Northern's only night game at home, the Bear's downed Cornwall I3-7 in an exciting game. A Skip Runk to Larry Klinedinst pass, with less than ten seconds remaining in the game, broke a 7-7 deadlock and gave Northern its first victory. Now full of football spirit the team went to Newville, where it downed hapless Big Springs 2l-O. Then the flu struck and football shut down for the three weeks, the layoff took the competitive edge away from the team, and it fell before Camp Hill 27-7. Then in the final game of the season the spirit fell away completely, as a powerful Cumberland Valley squad downed Northern 53-O. The J. V. squad made up of Varsity substitutes had an undefeated season showing promise for a good season next year. Go out and support the team. Ed Baughman circles right end against Biglerville. NORTHERN'S LASSES OF STICK AND TUNIC ln spite of the small turn out, the 20 girls that participated in the i957 hockey season can look back with a great deal of satisfaction in that they gained valuable experience under the direction of Miss Patricia Ann Zimmerman, All-American goalie and Northern coach for the past two seasons. The September 24 opening scrimmage game saw Northern's sharp teamwork battling the Carlisle lasses by a score 2-O, September 26 turned out to be blue Thursday, with the first Northern loss in i3 games span- ning two seasons, with Susquehanna coming out on top, 2-O. Spurred by this defeat, the Northern girls took revenge on Mechanicsburg with a 3-2 victory on Septem- ber Sl. Our girls went on to defeat Central Dauphin with a count l-O, October 3rd. Seniors Shirley Greenfield and Myra Austin prepare to bully. The league champions, Camp Hill, took a close one from the Northern lasses with a 2-l victory on October 9, and Enola took its toll, winning l-O, November l. November 8 saw the le-ague's season climaxed when the Northern girls lost to Cumberland Valley in a sea of mud. The score was 3-l. Myra Austin and Shirley Greenfield, seniors, played their last high school field hockey at the Central Penn Field Hockey Play Day held at Central Dauphin No- vember ll. The same event saw the following girls se- lected for the Central Penn ..Ge,,hG,bUIHH., All-Star Team: Barbara Cro- mer, Karen Cromer, Shirley Greenfield, Ruth Kirkland, and Eloise Speck, Special mention should be made of the good play by the team captain, Lois Hughes, and Northern's goalie, Ruth Kirkland. Wrestling seemed to attract many viewers and fans, because even though it is a very old sport, it is considered also to be one of the tuture's greatest. The Bears had ten very tough matches this season, in which they had to stand up against schools that had from three to ten years expe- rience in this art. Northern won one and lost nine, but during the entire season always had enthusiasm, and the desire to learn any tactics which Coach Abplanalp had to offer. ln their last match, with Boiling Springs, the Bears gave one last elllort for victory, and came out on top with a 33 to I7 win. Northern's top wrestlers were the Shaetter brothers, Paul and Chuck. Paul Shaetter, our 95 pound contender, lost two matches and came out on top in eight. Chuck Shaefter, l33 pound Junior, came out victorious in nine out of ten battles. Northern . . .22 ...... Dover . . . . . Northern ...IQ ...... Big Springs ... Northern . . . I4 ...... On February 28, l958, our boys were invited to participate in the District Meet at Boiling Springs. Paul and Chuck Shaefter again won and returned the next day to the semi-finals. The semi-finals proved to be very stiff competition tor both boys, as they lost by decisions. The wrestling results for T958 are below. Vernon Runk is pictured executing a reversal on Ronald Kearns. This sport is closely parallel to wrestling in that the emphasis is placed on individual performance rather than on team play. North- ern's runners, iumpers, discus and iavilin throwers, and shot-putters were under the watchful eyes of Coach Elwood Schaeffer. Added to the list of events this year were the low hurdles, entirely foreign to Northern's sprinters. . f . KNEELING, l.. to R.: K. Dick, R. Kearns, E. Baughmon, S. Runlc, G. Mummert, R Henry, S. Why, of course, they are the cheerleaders. Nineteen girls made up the three squads of cheerleaders tor this past year. Eight girls from the iunior and senior classes made up the Varsity squad, the Jr. Varsity squad consisted of six sophomores, and the Junior High squad had six girls from the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades. Coached by Mr. Lloyd Wag- ener, the girls learned many new cheers and many new styles of cheerleading. The activities of the girls con- sisted ot cheering at both away and home games, making money to buy new uniforms in the near future and making new uniforms for the Junior Varsity girls. Another activity was competing in York for a cheerlead- ing championship, but without gain- ing any prizes. To make money, the girls sold purple and white pen- nants with a polar bear on them and had a bake sale. Also they had a pep rally every Friday activity period. Some of the new cheers and the best liked were: Split T-E-A-M, Varsity-in which they stood in the form of a V. STANDING, from bottom to top M, Krone, L. Myers, B. Grove, S. Grove, G. Rider, J. Nesbit P. Diven, and J, Binner. J iii We've got rhythm, Go-Fight- Win, Your Pep, Dynamo, Susie-Q, and many others. Cheers with dance steps, cartwheels, splits, and tricky steps were also used. The cheerleaders met every Thursday activity period to practice and learn new cheers. They also had practice sessions after school whenever needed. ln the late spring, the cheerleaders for next year were chosen by the cheer- leaders for the past year, Mr. Wagener, and several faculty members. The Varsity cheerleaders were: Millie Krone, Captain, Beverly Grove, Shirley Grove, and Judy Nesbit, seniors, Loreen Myers, Pat Diven, Joyce Binner, and Gail Rider, iuniors. The Junior Varsity cheer- leaders were Elaine Zeiders, cap- tain, Mary Miller, Pat Miller, Pat Berkheimer, Betty Myers, Jessie Myers, and Mipper Ralston. Joy Paxton and Jemey Lou Smith were co-captains ot the Junior High squad. Other cheerleaders were Kay Lucas, Nancy Hudson, Amber Kimrnel, and Linda Hopf. We can expect many good things to happen to our cheer! leaders. Maybe next year they will be champs. Who Knows? L. TO R.: L. Hopf, J. Smith, J. Paxton, N. Hudson, K. Lucas, A.
