As sophomores lor wise fools, to quote one of our school's baccalaureate speakersl we elected John Miller president, Art Rider vice-presi- dent, Melvin Yoder treasurer, and Jo Hott secre- tary. After the World Series, in which the Giants defeated the Indians in four straight games, we started working furiously on our float, skipping continents by naming it Spanish Serenade. We finally decided after much debating, to put those flowers on our truck cab again. Much to our disappointment, we won only a third prize in a close race between the classes. At soccer games a new fashion trend came to light. Girls were apparnetly trying to compromise between shorts and slacks, and they came up with bermudas and knee socks. Opinions of this fad were widely varied, ranging from approval to statements which had to be censored. The knee socks were also worn with skirts. The rustling which could be heard when girls came down the halls was the result of the can-can petticoats which they wore. Ropes of pearls were worn with any- thing and everything. Now it was the boys who were letting their hair down, when they began wearing Princetons and D.A.'s. They also had to be on the look- out for anyone who might be inclined to step on their new white bucks. We attended our first semi-formal dance in the school lobby. lt was the Snow Ball dance, and Frances Drake and Deanna Schmuck were chosen by the class as attendants to the Queen, .lean- nette Hughes. We were very proud when two of our talented classmates, Eileen Weigard and John Miller, were selected for the school play, Riddle Me Riches. ln November, l954, one of our fellow York countians, George Leader of Dover, was elected Governor of our state. .U FZ 3 ' 2 -- 5 ti' E -,V Racoons had to run for their lives, and they had only Davy Crockett to blame. The nation's children were wearing coonskin caps and shouting Remember the Alamo! But our tastes were more refined, for we listened to Perry Como and Eddie Fisher. The girls went wild over Marlon Brando and Bob Francis on the movie screen. And speaking of movie screens, the newest things were Cinerama and Vista-Vision. Academy awards went to Marlon Brando and Grace Kelly, best motion picture was On The Waterfront. This is more than The history of The class of l957. lt is a glimpse into Our Age. We would like you to recall now, and in the future, some of the events, the fashions, The fads, and the feelings of your high school years. As the years pass, it will become even more valuable to you. As The class of '57, The first class to begin its freshman year in the new building, we began our four years at Northern during the most pros- perous period in our country's history. The Ko- rean truce had been signed during our summer vacation, and repatriation of prisoners of war was underway. On October 3rd, a new world speed record was set by a Douglas Skyray F4D, 753.4 m.p.h. The nation was under The leadership of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, while our class ofhcers were Dan Staub as president, Carolyn Rebert as vice-president, Jo HoFf as secretary, Shelvy Cromer as Treasurer, and Diana Hudson as historian. After laboring endlessly over flowers for it, we declared that never again would we have flowers on our float. Then finally The night of The parade arrived. Misunderstandings and quarrels were forgotten, when we realized that The number They were calling for first prize was The number we were holding in our own hands. While we were winning first prize, The New York Yankees Took The World Series from The Brooklyn Dodgers, four games to Two. That year, our boys were clad in wranglers, and our girls wore sheer nylon blouses. A lot of girls still have aT home dozens of neck-scarves, which They hardly ever wear, but which were The rage during our freshman year. Hairdos for girls varied widely, from The short Italian cut to long ponytails. Girls sighed over Tony Curtis, Bob Wagner, and Julius La Rosa, while boys spent Their Time whist- ling at pictures of that blonde Marilyn Monroe. The Oscar for The best motion picture of The year T953 went to From Here to Eternity. In checking back, we found many important national and international events which occurred during the second semester. On January Qi, T954, Mrs. Dwight D. Eisen- hower launched the first United States atomic- powered submarine, the Nautilus, at Graton, Conn. On March lst, 5 members of the United States House of Representatives were shot on the house floor by assailants identified as Puerto Rican na- tionalists. All 5 later recovered. On February 23, the first link was forged in a chain that was to make medical history, when Dr. Jonas E. I H A rf ' is Tig- - it The long sought goal of distance runners, the four-minute mile, was attained by 25 year old English medical student, Roger Bannister, on The Oxford track. He went the distance in 3 min., 59.4 sec. on May 6Th. The record was broken again by John Landy, 24 year old Australian, in 3 min., 58 sec. However, when the two great milers met at the British Empire games in Vancouver, Ban- nister won with a time of 3 min., 58.8 sec. One of the high spots of our freshman year that we will always remember were the monthly dances at Allenberry. Sometimes it seemed as though the floor would break when the gang did the latest dance rage, the bunny hop. Among the new experiences we shared was our first roller skating party, February 27, at Haar's. This was so successful that a yearly skating party became a class tradition.

'vs' We returned to school in September under a new school adminstration, supervising principal M. Luther Scott, and high school principal Dale W. Smith, to find that many changes had taken place. Eventually, we became accustomed to closed lunch periods, and carrying passes with us in the halls. Class leaders in our junior year were: president, Glenn Mclieever, vice-president, Eileen Weigard, secretary, Dale Zeiders, treasurer, Harold Bent- zel. Northeastern United States was still dazed from the most destructive flood that ever occur- red in the country. The flood was caused by the heavy rains that accompanied hurricanes Diane and Connie during August. Total property damage in the six states altected totaled S1,600,000,000. 191 lives were lost. On September 24, 1955, the unexpected news of President Eisenhower's heart attack shocked the nation. lt was described by the president's doctors as a moderate coronary thrombosis. Later, the stock market rose again, and industry and the nation breathed a sigh of relief when his recovery was certain. On highway 101 in California, a speeding sports car crashed, and motion picture actor James Dean was dead. The date was September 30th, but Jimmy Dean is still as popular as he was before his death. We remember his perform- ances in Rebel Without A Cause, and East of Eden. The Dodgers took the Series from the Yank- ees, four games to three. Our younger brothers looked surprisingly rough and tough in their purple and white foot- ball togs as the game was introduced to our school in the iunior high, with plans for senior high participation the following year. Then came another Farmer's Day, another float, this time named Beautiful Dreamer, more flowers, and another third prize. On October 31, Princess Margaret, sister of Queen Elizabeth ll of England, announced that she had decided not to marry Group Captain Peter Townsend. A great step took place in our labor unions when the CIO and the AFL merged. On December 12, the Ford Foundation announc- ed a grant of S500,000,000 to 4,157 privately supported U. S. colleges, hospitals, and univer- sities. ln February, the very successful play, Ram- shackle lnn was presented by the school. Junior cast members were Judy Slothower, Tillie Slyder, Ronald Wallace, and Art Rider. In boy's wear, khakis were beginning to re- place wranglers, and slacks were seen more fre- quently. Shirts were getting brighter and bright- er, and every one seemed to have a pink one. At the same time V-neck sweaters became pop- ular. While girls were getting their hair cut shorter and shorter, the boys were letting theirs get longer and curlier. The fad was to have an iden- tiflcation tag necklace with either your own, or that certain someone's name engraved on it. We listened to the records of the Fabulous Four Freshmen, and Gina Lollobrigida stepped into the spotlight to compete with Marilyn. The music we listened to was rock and roll, and a singer from Tennessee was creating a sensation in that field. lt wasn't the singing, but the mo- tions that accompanied the singing that caused the stir. Yes, it was Elvis Presley. We made our plans, and held our Junior-Sen- ior Prom at the Hotel Yorktowne in York. We dined and danced in the ballroom, which was decorated with pink roses and white candles, to the music of the Will Fisher Orchestra. Big headlines were made when a prince from a small European country, Monaco, fell in love with and married one of our glamourous movie actresses, Grace Kelly.
