Members of the Class of 19 53: A P You are graduating during a period when the world is S C involved in a battle of ideologies for men's minds, which is Democracy versus Communism. May you dedicate your lives :l for the preservation of Democracy. Our government means: Government with the consent of the govemed, as contrasted with government by dic- tatorial force imposed by suatagem and violence. Government with the consent of the governed requires the establish- ment and preservation of impartial election machinery, purity of the ballot, freedom of candidacy, open presentation of issues, liberty of press and discussion and educated electorate, and the right of the people to alter their fundamental laws by established processes as changed conditions call for alterations in the powers and forms of government. The preservation of personal liberty -- full religious liberty and freedom of press, speech, assembly, and petition -- The preservation of the rights of property lawfully acquired against arbitrary seisure and confiscation. The assumption of full individual responsibility in the discharge of private and public obligations. The Senior Class wishes to express their sincere thanks to you, Mr, Evans, for the wonderful guidance you have given us through our four years in high school. Without your help, many of our achievements could not have been accomplished. Miss Ieane Bock Secretary 'Jeane is every- one's friend. W l I f s X in 5 5- 't 2311. if F' in .st It . It was very difficult at times, but we are happy that we could go so far in our education. We will long remember old DHS and the new NIHS. Letuslook into the past and remember those happy and dear days. As we came up the walk on that warm Septem- ber morning in 1949, everyone was gay and full of joy. Today we were beginning our high school career. All students met together for the first time in the assembly rooms. We were welcomed by Mr. Evans, the super- vising principal, who introduced us to our teachers. Class meeting time will be long remembered. At our first session, we elected the following officers: Kay Gasswint as Presidentg Leona Zeigler as Vice President: Jo Wierrnan -- Secretaryg Nancy Strayer -- Treasurerg and Lloyd Wire as Historian. During September the school sponsored its annual magazine drive. The Freshmen, aided by the Juniors sold the most and were permitted to go to the first dance at the Allenberry free. In October, we made plans for Farmer's Day. We entered two floats but did not have luck with either one. We made a nice profit at our refreshment stand and fun was had by all. At Christmas we exchanged names and held our party in the Science room. Our advisors for the year were Mr. Habig and Mr. Musser. We also held a skating party and a hayride which brought us both fun and money. We end- ed our first year of high school with a joyous trip to Hershey Park. After three months vacation, forgot about summer activities and returned to Dillsburg High, eager to take up where we were glad to abandon our high school careers. We were now Sophomores! Even though we did not be- lieve it, our large assignments convinced us. At our first class meeting of this year we elected the following officers: Io Wierman -- President, Nancy Knisely -- Vice President, Janet Reynolds- -Secretaryg Nancy Strayer -- Treasurerg Margaret Spangler -- Historian. Once a- gain we won the magazine drive with the aid of the Seniors, and went to the first dance free. In October our thoughts again tumed towards Farmer's Day. We entered a decorated car fwhich won third prizej and a Dutch float. We also chanced off two turkeys for Thanks- giving. We had a skating party and hayride to add to the funds for our SENIOR TRIP. We ordered our class rings in November from The Union Emblem Company. Also during this year the school presented the play 'Cheaper By The Dozen' with Miss Stauffer directing. The following members who took part were: Jo Wierman, Bill Hamm, Bill Baer, Kay Gasswint, Donna Leese, Nancy Knisely, Jim Evans, and Marg Spangler. Our advisors this year were Miss Stauffer and Miss Statler. We brought our Sophomore year to a close with an enjoyable trip to Hershey Park. After a short and peaceful summer we returned to Northem High School, the fomier Dillsburg High School. We were very proud this year as we are now Juniors. We realized now that we were coming close to the end of our exciting voyage. Our home rooms this year were Room H3 and the Home Ec. Room with Mrs. Habig and Miss Forest as our advisors. We held our first class meeting in Room 143 and the following officers were elected: Leona Zeigler -- Presidentg Clyde Flohr -- Vice Presidentg Janet Reynolds -- Secretaryg Nancy Strayer -- Treasurerg and Marg Spangler -- Historian. The class again sold the most magazines, and along with the Freshmen were guests at the first dance at The Allen- berry. This year we entered two cars and one float in the Farmer's Day Parade. We made a nice profit from this affair again this year. We again ended the school year at Hershey Park. With a dignified appearance hiding a mischievous giggle, we entered the halls of old Dillsburg High. Now as we are Seniors, we think back over the last three years of our life and high school career. We have. no doubt, had hard knocks and bumps, but we have enjoyed each year as we will never enjoy any future year. To guide usthrough this big year we elected the following officers: Kathie Swaim -- Presidentg Kay Gasswint -- Vice Presi- dentg Donald Grove -- Secretary: Io Wierman --Treas- urer: and Marg Spangler -- Historian. Mr. Kaup be- came our class advisor to help carry us through the year. Our first attempt to help finance our trip to New York was a skating party which proved very successful. After the party, came the play which we sponsored at The Allenberry Playhouse. This did not prove too successful as we didn't sell enough tickets. As the end of October came around, Farmer's Day caused a good bit of worry and fun. We entered our decorated car, The Christmas Queen , in Hallowe'en parades in Dillsburg, Boiling Springs, York, Dover, Wellsville, Lewisbury, and Me- chanicsburg. Altogether we won S150 with the car. Some of the Seniors also entered the parades as a musi- cal group and that helped to bring in more money for our big trip. Then came our Senior Play, Every Family Has One . Analee Shillito and Leona Zeigler had the leading parts and helped make the play a big success. The other members of the clas who participated in the play were: Bill Hamm, Bill Baer, Io Wierman, Marg Spangler, Kay Kreiser, Donna Leese, Bill Stambaugh, Kay Gasswint, Kathie Swaim, Jim Evans. Miss Kerstetter fnow -Mrs. Snookj was the director of the play. Un- fortunately our janitor became ill and our furnace broke so school was not held for a few days. As every Senior class, we wanted a yearbook, so we got to working and slaving and finally got it in the mail for the press to print. We set up the yearbook at Spangler's house, as Margaret Spangler was our editor and done the very best job ever on a yearbook. This being our last year we have had the most enjoyable year of all our school days. glass will We the class of 1953 of Northem- High School being of sound mind and body do hereby bequeath the following gifts: To the faculty we leave a larger and more studious student body than ever. As I entered, I was greeted with a big smile by Kay, the owner of this luxurious hotel. Walking through the banquet room which was beautifully decorated with our class colors, cherry red and silver gray, I saw my old classmates together for t:he first time since we graduated. Each table setting had our class flower, a red rose, and a graduation picture of each student on it. Kathie Swaim and Analee Shillito, who have suites at this hotel and who are now teaching at our dear Alma Mater, were talking as fast as ever to Jo Wierman and Iacie Schaffer. lo is now a nurse to Dr. William Hamm and Jacie is head dress designer at Iacie's House of Fashions. Trig McCurdy, now married, is a forester in Canada, Jim Evans, still a bachelor, flew all the way from Australia in his new supersonic jet plane just to attend our re- union. Ken Darr, who is located in Pittsburgh, owns one of the largest garages in the country. Pete Hershey, who was going to be a lawyer, changed his mind and is now Ken's best mechanic. Kay Kreiser, with her family of three, is living at the Dillsburg Anny Barracks, where her husband is now stationed. Donna Leese and Shirley Weigard, who are employed by Clyde Flohr, the Mayor of New York, have been work- ing very hard. Doruia is Clyde's private secretary and Shirley his receptionist. Ralph Slyder has really lived up to his nickname Doc. He has followed his father's Profession and is also a veterinarian. Sherman Grove, now farming in the Barrens Valley, is rumiing a large chicken farm. Vance Wolf took an art course at a school in Philadelphia owned by Verla Todd and her husband. fVance is now teaching art at Dillsburg Grade School. J Marion Schrade is happily married and is living in New Cumberland. Clair Orner, now driving around in a 1963 Cadillac, has his own butcher shop in Wellsville. Smiling Don Hammond and Glen Myers are in joint partnership. Their implement shop seems to have lots of business and why not? Don and Suzie are just as friendly as ever! Bill Baer, now a state policeman, seems to be enjoying his work. Just yesterday I talked him out of giving me a ticket. That's my friend Bill! Nancy Strayer and Donna Chronister both married, are operators at the Bell Telephone, and strange as it seems, are almost all talked out. Janet Hoover, Colleen Fee and Joyce Nell are doing some secretarial work there. Barbara Smith and Marilyn Klugh are both happily married and living in beautiful ranch houses right outside of Dillsburg. Tom Fleming and Bud Lerew are living very comfortably with the small fortune they made from their cattle ranch. Bill Stambaugh, a graduate of West Point, Chet Byers and John Townsend, are now serving with the 'United States Air Corps. Sarah Watts is one of Mearl Kilmore's many secretaries. Mearl is a big business executive in Washington, D. C. and is kept very busy. fSo Sarah saysb. Sis Conoway, who is now in the Waves, could not be with us this evening as she is stationed in the Hawaiian Islands. loyce Hess has been working for her husband who owns a gas station near Harrisburg. Bob Wagner, who studied music for four years in college is now playing the tuba in the Phil Harmonic Symphony Orchestra. Ginny Hollandsworth and Irene Ryder are running a beauty salon of their own. They give very nice permanents and seem to have lots of fun doing it. Charlie Farence is operating five large farms in Lancaster County. Leona Zeigler, who entertained us this evening by singing and dancing, is working in the Gasswint Hotel for Kay. Her wish finally came true. Don Grove, now owner of a large dairy farm, is our local milkman. We can no longer kid Sterling Williams about his height, ashe isseveral inches taller than he used to be. Sterling is the proprietor of the Electrical Appliances and Repair Shop in Dillsburg. Now, after spending a wonderful evening with my classmates, it makes me very happy to hear of their outstand- ing achievements. It also made me realize how lucky I am to have such a wonderful husband and family and all the other blessings God has given us, Good night, Marg 4 1 ai a iilnw 33312 viifnmllwb Mmm 9 D, Chronister S, Williams K. Senior Qfllasa Hman Every Family Has One a comedy in Three Acts, was presented by the Senior Classrof Northern Huh School through the courtesy of Samuel French on December 11 and 12, 1952. Mrs. Lois M. Snook was the Director The cast of characters were as follows: Penelope Reardon Laura Reardon Mrs. James Parker Essie Nana Reardon Reginald Reardon Marcia Reardon Warry Reardon James Parker Sherwin Parker Lily Reardon Todd Galloway Donna Mae Leese Analee Shillito Jo Wierman Kathie Swairn Leona Zeigler I ames Evans Kay Kreiser Kay Gasswint William Hamm William Stambaugh Margaret Ann Spangler William aer STORY OF THE PLAY The Reardons are a typical American family whose eccentricities, if hilarious, are only normal. Laura, the mother, is a social climber who tells tales about her glorious ancestry. She is deliriously happy because the has engineered a match between her daughter, Marcia, and wealthy Sherwin Parker. The youngest Reardon, Penelope, is a demon with a slingshot and the piano. Warry, the only son, is positive he is the coming Eugene O'Neill, Reginald, the father, would rather tinker with the automobile than ticker tape, and Nana, the wise- cracking grandmother, is only concerned with Bing Crosby records and getting rid of the Parkers. Nana succeeds in doing this with the help of Cousin Lily, an adorable liar from down home with stage aspirations. Lily, ar- riving unexpectedly, agrees to impersonate another Cousin Lily if Nana will help her get an acting job. Her performance as the skeleton in the Reardon closet is so convincing and the lurid facts she reveals so hilariously shocking that the mighty Parkers take to their heels in a hurry and Marcia is reunited with the boy she really loves, Todd Galloway. Nana returns to her Bing Crosby records with the satisfaction of a job well done and Warry decides that even though Lily is a bit on the daft side, she's the only girl for him. ifarmnf 5 Q3 Q ,Q OUR MASTERPIECE Jo Wierman, Kay Kreiser, and Marg Spangler took turns riding as the Christmas Queen, lu, aww L A as Dover Stopped C C 'ln Soccer loopp ' Doeaorofk defeat rn t hands of Di' ws, .5 Q tk www ,Q lead deadlqgh tv r.
