Their coach, Mr. Reginald Manville, was determined to teach this young team of 3 juniors and 6 sophomores the basic techniques, skills, and powerful plays needed to grasp a Viking Victory. Even though there were sophomores on the team this year, they finished their season with a 16-4 win-loss record. Sophomore, Tracy Schnieder, was the team s leading rebounder while junior, Kevin May nor was the team's leading scorer. Although this j.v. basketball team was young and inexperienced, they did continue the Viking pride of no. 1 during the The Year After the 50th Anniversary.” 1. Mike McLin spends much time out practicing for the team. 217 Girls' Track, Runner-up in State Northern girls’ track team had a fantastic season. With the outstanding coaching job of coaches Al Sigman and George Dedrick, the Vikings finished the season as runner-ups in the State Championship. While coach Sigman handled the shotput and discus, along with the distance runners, coach Dedrick handled the sprinters, hurdlers, high jumpers and long jumpers and this made the Vikings closer to the State Title. The girls’ track team was composed of 4 seniors, 6 juniors, and 20 sophomores. With Northern having the winning coaches, they also have the winning team for the year after! Sandra Young seems quite sure of bringing Home another Viking victory. 218 Girls’ Track 1978 Scoreboard Beecher Opponent 15 Powers 15 Northwestern 46 Central 45 Arthur Hill 49 Pontiac 66 Southwestern 36 2 Kearsley 85 Clio 68 Lapeer West 59 Davidson 67 Lakeville 40 1st 44 pts. 85 pts. With the excellent help of the returning young ladies: Pamela and Paula McGee, Teresa Anthony, Lisa Freeman and Sarah Knighten the team took a 12-3 win-loss record winning city, valley and district titles. The team consisted of 3 seniors, 7 juniors, and 1 sophomore. The captain was senior Teresa Anthony who has been a member of Varsity for 3 years. Mrs. Margaret Johnson was the coach of the 1978-79 team. She expressed that the 1979-80 season looks exciting for the young ladies returning. They will be Toya Hall and Sarah Knighten, both setters, Lisa Freeman and Leteia Hughley, both spikers. The “year after” has been a success as the girls showed action and not a lot of words. 2. Evelyn Hamlett bumped the ball while Teresa Anthony, Toya Hall, Lisa Freeman and Leteia Hughley looked on to help. Teresa Anthony went up to block a spike from an opponent. They also did well in the team tournaments. The coach of this j.v. squad was Mr. Assia Jones. He aided the boys in training and counseling them for the wrestling matches. Pleased With Their Viking Year; All Well in 1979, The Year After The 1979 senior class of Northern High School worked very hard for events that led to the last of their high school days, June 11, 1979, which ended one life and mark the beginning of a new life. Their last year at Northern was a very exciting one. They hosted a talent show. The show along with other activities and sales helped them provide funds for senior activities. The activities included a dinner on May 18, the Honors Convocation on June 7, the Prom on June 8, and the Commencement Exercises on June 11. There were three sponsors who helped the seniors’ year to be a success, and they were Mr. Robert Rosborough, Mr. Richard Black, and Mr. George Perry. • High Distinction as of March, 1979 • Distinction as of March, 1979 2. The Flint River Project had been underway for a couple of years. Its main purpose was to beautify Downtown. The Flint River Bridge opened in the fall of 1978. Flint University of Michigan and Mott Community College were major factors in the community. Citizens and the Flint Board of Education were concerned about the academic aptitude of students graduating from high school. Through a special committee, this year marked the beginning of promotion graduation requirements. Tenth graders were tested in reading and mathematics in the spring of 1979. The Flint Community Schools were guided through this year by superintendent, Donald Crowder, who was appointed in March. Even though changes were continually being made, it was a united effort on the part of city leaders, state politicians, administrators, teachers, and citizens to make Flint a better place to live, work, and get an education. 1. After eight years with Walsworth’s Publishing Company, the Noroscope was printed by a publisher in Michigan, Graphic Creations. The staff had to adapt to new styles, layouts, deadlines, and new techniques for editing copy. Besides the changes, only five of the staff members were on the staff last year. One photographer was solely responsible for most of the photos that were taken and printed. Improvements in style, copy, and photography were major concerns for the 1979 yearbook staff. The staff concentrated on these areas. Along with the improvements, a new section was added which involved the Flint community. The 18 Noroscope staff members worked closely with editors Debbie Orr and Myron Watson and their advisor Ms. Dorothy Stradford. Tom Bielec, head photographer, and Ross Emerton who joined the staff second semester, worked diligently to fulfill all the requests and needs of the staff in photography. Year After... Hectic for Staff 1. Ardith Bullock, layout editor, was typing copy for the yearbook. 2. Pam Childers types copy for the yearbook. 3. Most of the 1978-79 yearbook staff discuss last minute details before the last deadline. Scott McDonough works at light box. Sandra Holmes and Jeff Goss look over pages. Gwen Cole, index editor; Debbie Laureto, Ellen Standoak, copy editor; Ardith Bullock, layout editor; Denise Tolbert, copy editor; Greg Hearn, Debra Jones, and Brenda McMillian and Bernadette Davis (standing) all engage in some facets of putting out the 1979 yearbook. 278 1. Tom Bielec and Ross Emerton are photographers for the North Wind and Noroscope. This is Tom’s third year on the staff, and his second as head photographer. 2. Ms. Dorthy Stradford advises editors Myron 2. Watson and Debbie Orr about finalization for the last deadline. 3. Eileen Bickford, index editor, adds a few more details to the pages for the last deadline. 279 NORTHERN COMMUNITY
