NORTHERN HEIGHTS w SENIOR COMMENTS Some questions about cross country were directed to the three senior members, Eric Parks, who has partici- pated in C.C. for 4 years; Marty Rice, 2 years, and Laurie Davidson, 2 years. Here are some of their replies: What qualities are needed to be a successful runner? You need to like to run and it helps if you have some speed, but most of all, you need to want to be suc- cessful. - Eric Parks You can't be afraid to work hard, and you must have a great desire to win. - Laurie Davidson What is at least one thing you have learned from being in C.C.? Running distance is something you have to do every day if you're going to stay in shape. - Marty Rice It doesn't pay to spread yourself too thin. - Laurie Davidson There is a friendship among teams, and no matter how bad it hurts, you've got to keep on running. - Eric Parks Of all the courses. Silver Lake was generally deemed the worst because of the hills, while Marion seemed to be the nicest. COMMENTS: Td like to thank Coach French for giving me a great start. Coach Perkuhn for putting up with us, and all the team members I've run with. - Eric Parks. La-La Land is a great place to visit. - Marty Rice I had a really bad season because I was sick so much. - Laurie Davidson Brad Marcotte - Chuggin' On 35 BASKETBALL Varsity First Row- Kim Shop©. Eric Parks coordi- nated the dinner this year. Julie Sattler served as mistress of ceremonies; Carrie Kayser, Greg French, Jay Goldsmith, and Lacie Birk delivered meals to shut-ins and served as host and hostesses. Diane Denison — Treasurer, and Jeff Schroeder — StuCo. Honor Society worked hard again as usual to make the concession stand profitable at athletic events. Everyone did his part and it was a successful year. With money the group made, they purchased 10 sci- ence books, 14 Kansas History books, and one Dictionary of American Biography for research purposes. These books will be placed in the library for use of all of the students at Northern Heights. Honor Society also started a tutoring pro- gram for any students wanting help in any area. Members gave their own time to help students during study halls and after school. Finally, at the end of the year, after a close race, the senior students with the top three grade point averages were select- ed to receive the three memorial scholar- ships. The recipients are as follows: The Ke- vin Dean Tally-Brent Allen Cox Memorial Scholarship to Laurie Marie Davidson, the Marcia Lynn Kusmaul-Mark Allen Edmunds Memorial Scholarship to Jacqueline Joy Johnson, and the Craig D. The group visited a basic fish hatch- ery. Then the group went to some Indian burial pits near Salina and from there spent the night (in tents) at Crescent Lake Camping Resort. The following day the group toured Maure Weigel's Prairie Raptors, the Cosmosphere in Hutchin- son. and then returned home after an exhausting trip. On the homefront the club invited two speakers to Northern Heights. Dr. Thompson, a Psychology Professor at Emporia State University, spoke to the club on October 1, 1987; and then on February 24. 1988, Larry Hase. a com- puter programmer at Emporia State Uni- versity, spoke about careers involving computers, and the salaries involved. The club had an all around good year this year, and they are really looking for- ward to next year. QUIZ BOWL The Quiz Bowl team consisted of 10 mem- bers this year. Altogether the team com- peted in six meets, the first of which was held at Emporia High School. The most suc- cessful of these meets was a third place finish at Hamilton High School. The team also competed at Washburn University for the WIBW High Q meet but lost by a small margin. The last big event of the year was when the team traveled to Seneca for the regional Quiz Bowl meet and spent the night there preparing for the big meet the following day. The team obviously did not have as successful a year as last year, but the team had a good time at all the meets and learned a lot this year. Everyone is looking forward to a challenging year next year, and hoping for a little more success. Joe Pond. Scott White. Sarah Fehr, Tracey Stinson. Leita French. Jenny Kayser. David Anderson. Harassed by a roomful of pupils who know all the answers but not for the questions asked, this particular teacher seems to prove the case for heredity. Moving, unperturbed, in a veritable bedlam of a classroom, and accepting the most insane answers as not only logical but academically correct. The Senior Trip of 1988 started on Thursday, May 12, 1988. The bus trip to Branson, Missouri, started at 6:00 a m. We arrived in Branson at 2:00 in the afternoon. After checking in to the hotel, the rest of the afternoon was ours. At 6:00 we all boarded the busses again and headed out for The Lake Queen Dinner Cruise. The next day was Friday, and we all got out of bed at a decent hour, and basically had the morning to ourselves. At 1:00 we went to Shepherd of the Hills and took a tour. After the tour, there was a pizza party at the hotel. After devouring the pizza, we were off to Shepherd of the Hills play. Saturday we all got up and went to the Wilderness Safari. After the Safari we went to Apple Mill restaurant and had a delicious meal. After 3:00 p.m. we went to Silver Dollar City. Sunday we spent all day at Silver Dollar City. Monday we said our good-byes to Branson and to the Kirkwood Inn. At 10:00 we hit Fantastic Caverns. By 5:30 the Senior Class of 1988 was home. Did you say something Mark? Who are those hunks behind those Fos- ter Grants? Lake Taneycomo We all would like to thank Mrs. Dhority, Mrs. Myers, Mrs. Moser, Mrs. Edmunds, Mr. Ed- munds, and last but not least, Mr. Powell. Without these people, we wouldn't have had so much fun. 75 IN MEMORY OF MARSHALL SPADE Marshall Spade was diligent with his students and gave his best so that his students could give their best. Mr. Spade wanted excellence for not only his students but also the district at large. He dedicated himself as a school board member, parent, and teacher toward his goal. He shall be greatly missed. The students, faculty and staff of Northern Heights extend our sheerest sympathy to Marshall's wife, Jan and the rest of his family and thank you for sharing this very special man with us. 76 Jeff Houck, our school's only member of the Kansas High School Rodeo Association, competed in 20 of the 22 qualifying rodeos in the 1988 rodeo season. Jeff's only event is the boys cutting competition. Jeff is the event director of the boys cutting and is president of the Board of Event Directors. Cutting competition is perhaps the most graceful and artistic rodeo event. Riding carefully into the herd, the rider selects the animal desired, brings it into the middle of the arena and then allows the horse plenty of rein as his mount moves into a defensive attitude in order to prevent the cow from returning to the herd. The judges mark the horse's performance from 60 to 80 points. Jeff won at the State Finals Rodeo in Topeka, June 2-5, 1988. He also won a plaque for the highest score in short go and was awarded a scholarship for college next fall. He will be attending the 1988 National Finals Rodeo in Pueblo, Colorado, July 25-30. 77 Class Of '88 Bradley Shawn Barger Kristi Renae Bishop Ron Alan Brunkow Lori Jo Cathcart Audrey Countryman Howard Alve Crabtree Becky Anne Crippen Harley Davidson Laurie Marie Davidson Diane Lynn Denison Kjersti Cecilie Dosen George Jefferson Emley, Jr. Ginger Gail Gatewood Patricia Kay Gundy Jennifer Len Haden Misty Lynn Heathman Stacie Alane Heathman Lori Renee Hilton Jeff Clinton Houck Robet Lome Hutchcroft Jason Allen Jenkins Jacqueline Joy Johnson Melissa Ann Johnson Kenneth Alan Kaniper Jennifer Lynn Kayser Stephanie Diane Lindsay LaDonna Irene Magathan Matthew Eric Mercer John Patrick Milner Hobart E.
