Allen, Kansas 1986-1987 Volume XXXII Northern Heights Wildcats Table Of Contents Seniors 2 Underclassmen 15 Faculty 23 Athletics 27 Clubs 45 Activities 59 Ads 82 3 4 WM 6 Birgitta Andersson is 17 years old and from Galiuo, Sweden. She is staying with Darrell and Suzanne Johnson. Q. What do you think of the United States? A. It is big. The people overall are very friendly. But 1 think the distance from one place to another was the biggest change for me. People seem to live so far from each other. Q. How do you like living in the United States? A. 1 think I like it. I'm not sure. I mean the United States is so big, I really cannot feel how it is to live in another part of the United States. But, I think I would have enjoyed the United States better if I had lived a little bit closer to a town. Q. What do you think of Northern Heights? A. It's small but that is ok because that way 1 know more or less everybody which makes it easier for me. I like the school and the teachers, but sometimes I think there are too many unnecessary rules. Q. What do you miss from home? A. I miss my friends terribly bad and my family. I also miss the city life and come and go without having anyone take me. Q. What are your plans for the future? A. My plans for the future will be to take my two remaining years in my Economical Line, and then I guess, try to find a job. If I can't, I guess I will go on studying, Business Economics and may even start a business. I want to thank NHHS for this year even though it hasn't been an easy one. I will really miss you all, and I hope some of you will keep in contact with me. 7 Senior Achievements Birgitta Anderson Choir 4, Plays 4 Donald Ave Cross Country 2-4, Track 4, Plays 1-4, VIP 4, Basket- ball 1, National Honor Society 3-4, National Honor Society President 4, Science, Math, Computer Club 4, Science, Math, Computer Club President 4, Quiz Bowl 2-4, Quiz Bowl Captain 3-4, Governor's Scholar 4, Na- tional Merit Scholar 4, Citizen Bee 3, Kansas Honor Scholar 4 Brian Bailey National Honor Society 4, Wrestling Manager 1, Choir 1 Douglass Eugene Blanklev Industrial Arts 1-3, FBLA 4 Naomi Clock Band 1-4, Cross Country 3-4, Play 4, VIP 2 Steve Coe Football 1, Band 1, Industrial Arts 1-4 Rae Lvnn Crane Track 1, Journalism 3-4, Annual Staff 3-4, FBLA 3, Pep Club 1, Teacher's Aide 4, Office Aide 2, Annual Staff Editor 4 Tom Crumrine Vo-AG 4, Track 3, Art 3, Football 3-4, Shop 1,2,4 Mark DeWeese Band 1-2, FBLA Vice-President 3-4, FBLA 1-4, Indus- trial Arts 1-4 Tiffany Eastman Volleyball 1-4, Track 3-4, Band 1-4, Choir 1, Plays 3, Cheerleader 3-4, Homecoming Queen, Class Treasurer 2, Class Secretary 3, Class Vice-President 4, Pep Club 1-4, National Honor Society 3-4, National Honor Soci- ety Secretary 4 Daniel David Eckelberrv Football 1-4, Basketball 1-2, Track 1, Industrial Arts 4, Class Treasurer 1, Class Vice-President 2 Tim Goodpasture Industrial Arts 1-4 Michelle L. Our best wishes and love shall be with you through all your adventures in this year and the years that follow. Congratulations! Mom Dear Janice, The memories and moments we have had together have been very special. We wish you the best of luck in the future. We congratulate you for a great job! Love, Mom, Dad, Sherry and Mark II Prophecy The year is 2007, and the NHHS class of 1987 is having their 20th year reunion. The women are required to sit on the north side of the lake and the men on the south because of the new “airspace” law. The attendance would have been 100 percent, except for Stacie Dawes, who wrote to decline her invitation by saying she had had enough of NHHS and refused to come back. The entertainment for the evening is world famous pianist, Naomi Clock. The first to arrive are Steve Newton and Tommy Joe Crumrine. Steve is the new principal of the Bushong Vo-Tech School and Tommy Joe is vice-principal. They arrived on the Vo-Tech bus driven by John Pee-Wee Pearson. Next, all the way from California, comes Tiffany Eastman in her pink, bubbling bug. Now known as California's Ultimate Valley Girl, she takes one look at the group and shrieks, Totally Awesome! Following Tiffany is a canary-yellow Corvette driven by everyone's favorite Barbie Doll, Christy O'Brien. She now sings with the group Barbie and the Rockers. Marcia Jones comes coasting up in her little red Chevette. She quickly rushes Peter B. Loucks into the barber's chair under the shelter. She is giving free demonstrations of the latest men's looks. Peter B. Loucks, while thumbing through a magazine, suddenly announces his middle‘initial stands for Beatrice. Suddenly, without warning, a deafening roar and a cloud of dust appears from behind. As the dust recedes, a figure appears. It is Steve Coe sitting on his Harley with horns. He is noted for becoming the first member of Hell's Angels to wear a cowboy hat. From the class of 1987, four former students are now employed at NHHS. Sean McDonald is the new boys' basketball coach. All the former students of NHHS voted Christy Reust as “Potato of the Year for her great teaching methods. Chuck Magathan now welds all the bars on NHHS windows. Birgitta Andersson is Mr. Powell's personal Swedish interpreter. A loud thunder rumbles across the sky. Don Aye, a nuclear physicist, and Marsha Williams, his personal secretary, come floating down in parachutes. They have just competed the first parachute jump from a space shuttle. Sirens are heard and we turn our heads to see Dan Eckelberry, escorted by the police, in his armor- coated Pinto. He is now a counselor for psychopathic killers. His biggest success, Tim Goodpasture, crawls out of the car. Tim, known for his brutal slayings of female aardvarks, is now a TV evangelist. He sends all his money to the preservation of aardvarks. Suddenly, a beautiful rainbow appears from the sky. Down slides Michelle Wyda with a little Rainbow in her hand, commonly known as vacuum cleaners. Michelle has put Admire on the map for her spectacular sales. Out of the water, like Bo Derek, come Rae Lynn Crane and Janice Stukey in skin-tight suits. They proceed to show everyone their famous twenty-second workout. Out of the blue, a jet plane lands on the dam. Lori Snider hops off the jet in a sparkling, crimson evening dress. She has bags full of the newest fashions for all of her hick friends. Michelle Wheat unveils her world-famous, million dollar male version of the Mona Lisa. She plans to auction it off right after the reunion. Michelle Grimsley jumps out next and proceeds to show everyone her new line of cosmetics. Grizzly's Grime. Tiny balloons suddenly appear everywhere. We look up to find Eric Wooderson in a hot air balloon. He now owns his own balloon factory called Balloons Unlimited. A blaring of a horn is heard. It is Shannon Kimball and his chiropractor, Kirk Hammond. Shannon, who is a Sumo wrestler, is dressed in a gigantic diaper. He challenges anyone who dares to fight him. Brian White, the new David Letterman, shows up all the way from Hollywood. He is with his next three guest stars: Brian Bailey, who is wanted in several states for writing obscene graffiti on church walls; Clint Myers, who is the producer of cowboy pornos from Louis Lamour books; and Steve Tucker who fixes the hottest racing cars in Hollywood. We also have two more celebrities from Hollywood. Lisa Jones is the new Dr. Ruth and makes special guest appearances to NHHS at Mr. Massey's request. She shares the spotlight with Mark Robinson. He co- stars with Tom Selleck and often does stand-ins when Tom is ill. From behind the dam, we see a tall dark silhoutte appearing. It is world-famous Harlem Globe Trotter, Tammy Hopper. She has grown to be 6'13 . She is accompanied by her bench-warming buddy, Jackie Shope. Next to arrive is Doug Blankley, riding on his pet lion. Doug is now a world famous lion tamer. Last to arrive is Mark DeWeese with a truck load of melons. Mark is now a very productive melon farmer. Everyone has arrived, the airspace rule has been quickly broken, and the partying begins. , Senior Wills I, Brigitta Andersson, of alien mind and body will to Mr. Powell my ability to not know anything in Ameri- can History and Government; and to Lyon County's hung up people, my liberal views on life. 1, Don Aye, being of sound body and slow mind do hereby bequeath the following: to Brad Marcotte and Tom Reust 1 leave the ability to medal in cross country with only one shoe on; to Nancy Williams I leave my much coveted brain and quiz bowl ability; to Scott White 1 leave a bushel of Turkey Red Wheat and finally to Leita French I will a subscription to Shoot- ing Magazine. 1, Brian Bailey, being of sound mind and body will to the following: to all ex-chemistry students (like Tif- fany Eastman), the ability to determine which is the top end of a thermometer; and to Dustin Heiman, my ability to stand proud as people walk down the hall and say, Just Pass Baby. 1, Doug Blankley, being of partying mind and mis- shapen body will the following: to John Wilmore, I will the ability to have a 6 cylinder, but still not the slowest car at school; to Mark Moser, 1 will the ability to party all night long and still be able to weed eat the yard in the morning. 1, Naomi Clock, being of inquisitive mind and strange personality, do will the following: to Joey Ellis my ability to ride the bus every day without getting into a fight; to my sisters Tammy and Onalee, 1 will all of the interesting pictures I have in my locker; and to Rick Hamlin I will my ability to not fill an entire notebook with pornographic cartoons. 1, Steve Coe, being of sound mind and bareback riding body bequeath the following: to Clint Myers my ability to not get drunk and try to pick up fat women; the rest I am taking with me because nobody deserves it. Ladycats flash their winning smiles. Cross Country T. Reust at his best. B. Marcotte running his hardest. The Cross Country team was inexperienced but enthusiastic this year under the leadership of Coach French. There were four freshmen: Tom Reust, Brad Marcotte, Nele Wells, and Tammy Clock; three juniors: Marty Rice, Eric Parks, and Lau- rie Davidson; and only two sen- iors: Don Aye and Naomi Clock. Marsha Williams was team manager. The team leader Don Aye, medaled at most of the meets, but didn't place high enough at the icy (approximately 30 degrees Fahrenheit) regional meet to go to state. The other senior veteran of the team Naomi Clock also ad- ded some medals to her reper- toire this year. Laurie Davidson placed at all the meets, winning two out of five. She qualified for state, also, where she placed 31st out of approximately 145. The other members of the team worked hard and ran well. This young team makes the fu- ture for Northern Heights Cross Country Team look bright. The Wildcat Cross Counry Team: First Row: N. Clock, M. Rice, D. Aye, And E. Parks. Last Row: L. Davidson, T. BACK ROW: Wes Decker (Manager), Troy Eastman, Joe Pond, Jason Cathcart, Jerry Boyce, David Anderson, Matt Horton, Steven Kaniper, Aaron Grother, Rick Hamlin. SENIORS: Sean McDonald, Brian White, and Eric Wooder- son. The 1986-87 Northern Heights boys' basketball squad began the season with many young, inexperienced athletes. However, as the season progressed the team matured into a group that showed promise of a bright future. The NHHS Varsity began the season with tournament losses to Council Grove and Hillsboro. They bounced back to defeat Herington and Hamilton. The rest of the season the Wildcats suffered five losses which were fewer than eight points. They finished the season with a loss to St. Marys and ended with an 8- 13 record. Alan Kaniper and Brad Massey, the statistical leaders all year long, were both named to the Lyon County All-League basketball team. The Wildcats will be losing Eric Wooderson and Brian White to graduation. These two men provided strong leadership throughout the season. Along with these four men, Mark Walford and Greg French were letter winners. The Wildcat JV squad improved a tremendous amount throughout the season. The 6-10 record of the JV does not indicate the type of hustle and pride these Wildcats demonstrated. The Freshmen squad was winless in three games, but also improved their fundamental basketball skills. 34 VARSITY N.H.H.S. Al- though Northern Heights does not have a team, we have several individuals who enjoy the competition of Rodeo. The individuals at Northern Heights pay for their entry fees and travel expenses. Although this is not a school spon- sored sport, the individuals do have to keep their grades up to be able to participate. Qualifications for Honor Society include: Scholarship (at least a B average). Leadership, Character, and Service. The Wildcat Chapter of National Honor Society had seventeen members this year. They ran the concession stand for athletic events, and everyone worked hard to keep it profitable. The chapter also sold calendars at the beginning of the year. On May 2 the Juniors held the Junior- Senior Prom in the high school gym. The evening started off at 6:30 with Laurie Davidson, Junior President, welcoming everyone. Rev. Dale Lewis gave the invo- cation. Dinner was then served by the Junior Class Mothers. The meal, consist- ing of roast beef, mashed potatoes, corn, green beans, hot rolls, jello salad, and cherry cheesecake, was served buffet- style. Dr. Larry Erpelding, guest speaker, en- couraged everyone to Go For It. Tiffa- ny Eastman, Senior Class Secretary, read the class prophecy and Michelle Wheat, Senior Class President, read the class wills. The dance started at 8:00 with FOX 105 providing the music. The gym was deco- rated as a jungle. A grass hut was placed on the stage with a waterfall painted in the background. Parachutes were draped from the ceiling and a small waterfall was on the gym floor. Coconuts, parrots, pineapples, and many different plants were placed around the gym. 70 The waterfall fish pond. The Hut Senior Trip On May 15th at 5:30 p.m. the Senior class headed out of the NHHS parking lot for Kansas City. We arrived in K.C. at 8:00 p.m. and unpacked. On Saturday we went to Worlds of Fun and then to the Nelson Art Gallery. Sunday morning everyone got up bright and early and we headed out for the zoo. After visiting all the animals we then went back to our hotel to do what we pleased with the rest of our day. Some of us went right to the pool, others took advantage of the sauna, whirlpool or played a game of tennis on the courts. On Monday we went to Hallmark and then we went shopping all afternoon at the mall. After we got back from the mall we got ready to go to the Royals game. The game was really neat except for the rain, but everyone had fun anyway. On Tuesday we went on the Missouri River Queen boat ride. After the boat ride everyone got loaded up and we headed for home. Even though everyone was exhaused from the trip it was definitely a trip to remember! 71 RESULTS OF LEAGUE SCHOLARSHIP TESTS CLASS 3A AND STATE NAME SUBJECT Aye, Don Literature XII Physics American Government Current Affairs Bailey, Brian Computer Literacy Physics Biggs, Melanie Spelling X Home Econimics II Clark, Rob Industrial Arts Clock, Onalee General Math Home Economics I Davidson, Laurie Physics American History Duncan, Kim Psychology Eckelberry, Dan American Government Ellis, Joey Spelling X French, Leita English IX Home Economics I Grother, Rebecca H.S.
