Coach’s Comments The 1982 football season was not only successful but exciting. Our team set some goals to strive for in 1982 and many of them were met. First was our victory over the Olpe Eagles, which to many could have been our season in itself. The next goal was winning the Lyon County League, which we did by going 6-0 in league play. This goal was not obtained easily. Every week was a bigger game played on their field. NHHS and Hartford entered the game undefeated, but NHHS came from behind in the first quarter and won the game 15 to 8. The next big game was against the Lebo Wolves. Lebo had a very potent offense. They came out early with a 14 to 0 lead. But again the NHHS players came from behind to win 30 to 26. The only goal our players didn’t achieve was getting into the state playoff, but Osage City and Mission Valley knew they had played a game of football. Over all. with a record of 7-2. this was a very enjoyable and exciting year for the coaches. Congratulations to the players and thank you fans, you were great fol- lowers of our teams. (Not Pictured: Vickie Besack.) Volleyball, 1982, was an interesting and exciting blend of the old and the new. Although the team had five seniors, the overwhelming feeling was one of youth. A very fine and talented group of sophomores seemed to add a tremendous amount to the team, both in play and in spirit. Our youth and inexperience showed in our inability to win the close games. High points in the season include close, well-played games against Hamilton and Waverly. We will miss the play and contributions of seniors Julie Stone, Kelly Martin, Vickie Besack, Carrie Burton, and Lisa Keys next year, but with the talent and pride in our returning players, volleyball at Northern Heights has a bright future. 1. Michele Keys waits for the ball. 2. Gale Thompson shows team spirit. Everyone realized that if the Cats were to truly be a good team that goals had to be set, and reached. Miles and miles of hard work were put in to prepare, then finally it just came down to doing what was needed to perform well. By now there were no more untested youths on the team, just runners with goals to reach. Some of the goals of the season? To run extremely well at Holton, Burlingame, Osage City, to win the first ever NHHS Wildcat Classic, to place third, or better at Regional, and to place eighth at the state meet. Every one of those goals, set during two-a-day practices were reached. Without all of the determination, effort, and caring which became trademarks of this year’s team, there would not have been the personal best times, the excellent team performances, the state meet to proudly remember, and most importantly there would not have been all of those very pleased smiles that were seen all season long. In 1981 going to state was a storybook ending. There was a storybook feeling again in 1982, not just at state, but throughout a whole season packed with great memories of performances that make it very easy to look forward to next year with .smiles! The Wildcats were 4-4 in the Lyon County League, leaving them in a fifth place tie with Hartford. Mark Wecker was an all-tournament selection in the Lyon County League Tournament. Doug Parks and Craig Kimball were selected all-league by the coaches at the conclusion of the season. The Wildcats will miss the three graduating seniors, but will have a strong nucleus returning next year. The prospects for some good basketball appear bright for future years at Northern Heights. The Wildcats returned with three starters Sr. Julie Stone, Jr. Gale Thompson, and So. Lisa Henning. The Wildcats started off with a slow begin- ning but hustled and scraped their way to third place in the Lyon County Tournament. It was this same hustle that propelled the girls to winning their l st three out of four games of the regular season, which gave them the extra determination and spirit go- ing into the first round by defeating Canton- Galva on their home court 42-36. The Wild- cats suffered defeat in the semi-finals as Peabody overruled by a score of 46-60. Peabody continued on to play in the State Tournament. Coach’s Comments live Qo Zo State The 1983 Track and Field Season was full of pure excitement. With only ten girls on the team, Heights placed at every meet. This year at the Lyon County League the girls placed second in a tough competition. But the excitement did not stop there, the girls went on to capture first place at Regionals. Through a season of consistent running the girls were able to put a 440 relay team together which qualified to go to state. Despite losing two seniors many good tracksters remain for the future. Senior Zrip On April 13th, at 5:32 a.m., the 1983 Senior class began the long journey to Dallas, Texas. Accompanying the Sen- iors were sponsors Virginia Ray, A.E. Powell and Kim and Jim Dhority. The class arrived at the Best Western Tom Penney Inn at about 3:30 p.m. Welcoming the warm temperature, around 75 degrees, most of the seniors hopped into their bathing suits and took a swim. Highlights of the trip were the Famous Neiman-Marcus, the Dallas Zoo, the Mesquite Rodeo, and Six Flags. All available time was spent basking in the sun and swimming. The senior trip was a great experience to all who participated. Many old friendships were renewed, and many new ones were developed. The Senior trip was a happy one, and the memo- ries will linger on for all who shared in it. 6. V. Ray, Mr. Mrs. Dhority. 9. R. Hammond holds a pigeon. 2. The NHHS men enjoy the Dallas Zoo. 4. J.
