ARE FOREVER Northern Heights High School Allen, Kansas 1981-1982 Volume XXVII WILDCATS Table Of Contents Seniors 3 Underclassmen 13 People 23 Sports 29 School Life 53 Special Events 63 Advertisement 81 In Memory Of Marcia Lynn Kusmaul We, the students attending Northern Heights during the 1981-82 school year went back to class — the shock, confusion, and sadness of Marcia’s death has dulled. Marcia Kusmaul, at the age of 18, died Wednesday, February 17th, 1982, at the K.U. Med. Center, of cancer. She was a great part of Northern Heights High School. Elected Vice-President of her Senior class and a basketball cheerleader, she also sang in chorus for four years, and was active in plays and basketball her Freshman-Junior years. Copies of her senior picture were traded with us, her friends, and one also accompanied her obituary. Marcia was elected Queen of Courts, a tribute we felt would naturally have been hers had Marcia been able to attend school her senior year. During the ceremony, when Marcia was announced as Queen, Janet, her younger sister, accepted the flowers and crown, and placed them on a vacant throne. Marcia had planned to be present for the ceremony, but red carnations had to be simultaneously delivered to Marcia’s hospital bed in Kansas City. Five days later, Marcia went to live with Jesus. Marcia is missed. She did not live long enough to do everything she had once planned, and although some people knew her for only a short time, everyone has gained by knowing Miss Marcia Lynn Kusmaul, whether they knew her for only a day or 18 years. Marcia’s parents, Alan and Wilma Kusmaul, do not have “just two” daughters. Glenda may not always live in Topeka, and Janet surely won’t always live at home, but Marcia will always live in Heaven. McVey Head Coach Coach’s Comments This year’s volleyball season record was a disap- pointing 5-15. The season itself, however, was not as dismal as the record would indicate. On a team composed of almost half freshmen, the learning and growth experienced during the season was dramatic. You expect to play young, inexperienced players on a junior varsity squad, but many times we played two or three freshmen on varsity, while our opponents fielded a team with four, five, or even six seniors! The inexperience showed but the great talent of our underclassmen helped keep us close in many matches we were expected to lose badly. It is difficult to keep spirits up when your team is not experiencing a successful season, but the upper classmen really helped to keep the team going. Special credit goes to Lizzy Schlesener, a Senior and the Varsity captain, and also Cindy Houck, a Junior and the Junior-Varsity captain, for keeping things running smoothly. We will miss the contributions of our three Sen- iors: Lizzy Schlesener, Janet Robinson, and JoAnn Robbins. But with all of the experience gained this year, things look bright for the coming years for Northern Heights Volleyball!! 30 Seniors: JoAnn Robbins, Lizzy Schlesener, Janet Robinson. Defense seemed to be what the Wildcats played best, losing by 1 to Olpe, 8 to Waverly, 2 to Hartford, 7 to Chase County and 24 to Osage City. All of our victories were by decisive margins: 26-0 Marais des Cygnes; 42-6 Madison; 22-0 Lebo; and 22-0 Mission Valley, our seniors were outstanding in this game. Highlighting the season was selection of two senior line-back- ers, Duane Parks and Dennis Ford, to the Lyon County All League Team, and the selection of Duane Parks to play on the East squad in the East West Shrine Bowl in August, 1982. With the outstanding younger players coming back in 1982, the coaching staff is very optimistic about the coming season in Wildcat Football. iCOCOOCCOOCCCOO' 1. Head Football Coach, Mr. Pruitt 2. The 1981-82 basketball season proved to be a very interesting one for the lady Wildcats. They finished the season with re- cords of 8-11 for the Varsity team, 4-7 for the Junior Varsity team and 4-0 for the Freshman team. Even though they did not have a winning season, the girls were very successful, consider- ing the lack of experience and the tough competition in our league. Two teams in our league participated in the state tour- nament and 8 of our 11 loses during the season were to state- ranked teams. Several girls re- ceived recognition this year. Lizzy Schlesener was chosen for the Lyon County All-Tourna- ment team and Julie Stone re- ceived the All-League award. I was very proud to have been able to work with this fine group of hard working athletes and with Coach Weber, who was a great help to us all. The leadership and dedication of this year’s two seniors will be missed, but with the goals set by and the determination of the underclassmen, next year should prove to be a rewarding one. 38 Freshman Squad Girls’ Varsity Basketball NHHS OPP. 27 Olpe 70 49 Hartford 41 56 Hamilton 32 44 Flinthills 32 37 Waverly 56 46 Lebo 37 62 MDCV 46 42 Madison 66 44 Lebo 49 45 Olpe 60 25 Mission Valley 46 56 MDCV 44 44 Waverly 77 43 Hartford 27 41 Central Heights 60 Lyon County League Tournament 43 Lebo 37 40 Olpe 62 39 Waverly 52 Sub-State Tournament 24 Lucky High 52 Girls’ JV Basketball 12 Olpe 38 22 Waverly 39 19 Lebo 40 20 MDCV 11 24 Madison 50 22 Olpe 38 22 Mission Valley 48 37 MDCV 23 20 Waverly 33 27 Hartford 16 38 Central Heights 26 Girls’ Freshman Basketball 24 Hartford 15 28 Hartford 20 34 Mission Valley 32 61 Osage City 35 Lizzy Schlesener First Row: Amy Weaver, Becky Britain, Susan Pond, Amy Parks. The Wildcats contested every ball game as they averaged 57 points per game to our opponents 54. Three ball games were decided in overtime, and only two games were lost by more than four baskets. The long term objective of the team was to play with- in the spirit of the game while developing a win- ning attitude about life. The frustrations of narrow defeats, hard practices and long hours were over- come by the “never give up” attitude. In this re- spect, the team members are truly winners, and the graduating seniors take with them the secret of success. Three returning Varsity starters and other under- classmen, who contribut- ed to winning junior varsi- ty and freshman records, will provide the nucleus of next year’s team. New faces will take on the chal- lenges of the game, but the leadership and effort of this year’s seniors will be missed by the coaches. Special honors go to Duane Parks. Duane aver- aged 18 points and 10 re- bounds per game. He was selected to the Lyon County League All-Tour- nament Team, and also to the All-League Team. Duane also participated in the American Heart Asso- ciation All-Star basketball game in which he contri- buted 16 points. In looking back upon the 1982 Wildcat Track season, quality performances were turned in by upperclass- men and underclassmen as well. Many inexperienced freshmen and sophomores were asked to compete with the confidence and ability of juniors and sen- iors. Throughout the season the younger runners re- mained underclassmen, but they didn’t compete like it — not at all! “That guy’s a freshman?” or “He’s a sophomore?” were heard as people learned of the real youth of Heights tracksters. It must be said that the efforts of key upperclassmen in leading by exam- ple played a huge role in the success of their young teammates. The entire team didn’t talk about im- proving, people just made certain they would. There are no winning streaks to talk of this year, no, NHHS didn’t win the league championship, again, but you know as those underclassmen turn into upperclass- men .... well, let’s just say it raises some exciting questions! In one short year, Heights girls’ tracksters were taking 3rd places, as a team, in the same meets that they had previously placed 7th, 8th or 10th. While youth was a trademark of the team, so was its quality. This was especially evident at the Lyon County League meet, where the sprinters are getting fas- ter, distance runners are getting stronger and more cunning, and jumpers are more consistent, which all adds up to some very good track athletes doing some very good things this year, and in the seasons ahead! State Meet Qualifiers 800 Meter Run — Amy Weaver 3200 Meter Run — Julie Stone Long Jump — Catherine McKernan Cross Country Team Places In State Meet Coach Craig McVey, Tony Mundy, Wes Moore, Warren Voor- hees, Larry Williams, Kevin Bowers Larry Williams In 1981, Northern Heights-Cross Country, in only its second year, undertook the unenviable task of competing against some of the most powerful 3-A, 4-A, and 5-A schools in Kansas in preparing for their regional meet. Although somewhat short on experience, people improved, and even while run- ning against stiff competition, the Wildcats ran extremely well. The biggest surprise of the season came on Halloween. With experience gained from the stiff competition earlier, the Wildcats were awesome in placing 4th out of 11 teams in the Ottawa 2-A Regional. In a storybook ending, the Wildcats had earned a trip to the State Cross Country meet in Wamego. One week later the Wildcats placed 12th in class 2-A Cross Country. All of the 2-A teams in the State meet had been there one year earlier, all that is, except for North- ern Heights. A year earlier Heights had been get- ting ready in its very first year. In their second year our runners were in the State meet! In their third year ... Who knows? . . . Maybe another storybook ending? Sept. 17 Rossville Inv. Voorhees, Med.-20th Sept. 23 Holton Inv. A combination of weight training, calisthenics, jogging, depth jumps and plyometrics are used to reach the desired goals. Phys- ical fitness tests, individual data sheets and conferences are used to evaluate the student’s progress and focus on needed areas of improve- ment. Records of student’s weight, strength gains and progress in other areas are kept and given to the stu- dent at the end of the course. Ad- vanced physical education is a de- manding course but the results are worth the effort.
