Unity ... that rare feeling of togetherness the deli- cate blending of many minds, bodies and spirits toward the accomplishment of one goal ... a total team effort . .. each person giving all that she can give ... a feeling of strength and power which makes even the hardest task easier ... unity ... the theme of the 1980-81 vol- leyball team. Our second place finish in the League Tournament was one of the highlights of our season, especially the cham- pionship match against Madison. Beating Olpe twice during the year gave us momentum for the substate tournament and was a great experience. The Junior Varsity also defeated Olpe easily, thus avenging a pre- vious loss. One of the best parts of the whole season for me was getting to know the girls and working so closely with such a fantastic group. Everyone of them deserves a part of the glory, but special mention and thanks should be given to the seniors. We will miss these girls next year, but we have a lot of talent and great girls coming back. Many thanks to assistant coach Holly Myers for all her help and support. But a special thank you for the opportunity to know you and work with you. You made it happen! First Row: Catherine McKernan. Injuries were plentiful and ended the season early for many Wildcat athletes. Temporary injuries also kept the Wildcats from realizing their potential as many athletes were forced to miss games during the middle of the season. The character of the team came through when the Wildcats came back after a very disappointing loss to Waverly with a stunning victory over the Olpe Eagles. The Cats went on to build a seven and two season record which earned the team a berth in the playoffs. Even though the Wildcats didn’t advance, the state trip was a fitting climax to a very enjoyable season. 35 1. Head coach Ed Bowen sending in plays with Split End Jeff Thomas. 2. Having to replace a number of injuries on the varsity team usually gave the J.V. a new combination of players for each game. Although their record stands only 2-3, it was a good season with many highlights. Two of the biggest thrills came with the victories. One victory came against Waverly in which the Wildcats won in triple overtime 14-12. The other was a deeply satisfying 28-6 thrashing of the Lebo Wolves. It was rewarding moments like these that made the J.V. season so enjoyable. Of the twenty games Heights played this year, six of them were de- cided by two points or less. There were several high- lights during the season. The 55-53 defeat of Olpe in the Lyon County League Tournament was one of the major upsets of the year. Later in the year Heights defeated Waverly at home 56-54. Both Waverly and Olpe were highly ranked teams and it was upsets like these that provided highlights for the season. Team accomplishments were 2nd place in the League Tournament and 3rd place in League. Indi- vidual accomplishments were: Ross Hammond and Ron Glover-All-League; Wayne Stewart, Ross Hammond and Ron Glov- er-All-Tournament Team. Also Don Kayser, Ross Hammond, Wayne Stew- art and Ron Glover were selected to play in the Lyon County All-Star game. Seniors finishing up their career at Northern Heights are Ross Ham- mond, Ron Glover, Don Kayser, Wayne Stewart, and Scott Smith. The Northern Heights girls team finished with a 12-8 record during the 1980-81 season. The girls posted a 6-2 record in taking third place in the Lyon County League. The girls will lose two seniors, but could be very competitive next season. Joyce Maxwell and Vickie Thompson will be missed next year, but five underclassmen with considerable playing time this year should form a good nucleus. Joyce and Vickie were selected to the All-League Basketball team, as well as being co-captains for the current season. Aspirations for next season should be high. High goals, determination, and hard work by the younger lady cats could make for a good season next year. 47 48 Girls’ Varsity Basketball NHHS OPP. 41 01 pe 60 Lost 66 Hartford 43 Won 40 Hamilton 13 Won 53 Flinthills 32 Won 47 Waverly 41 Won 49 Burlingame 27 Won 35 Lebo 22 Won 44 MdC Valley 27 Won 42 Madison 53 Lost 34 Lebo 21 Won 35 Olpe 58 Lost 46 MdC Valley 37 Won 37 Waverly 36 Won 32 Central Heights 43 Lost 21 Mission Valley 27 Lost League Tournament 43 Hartford 34 Won 30 Madison 51 Lost 35 Waverly 48 Lost Sub-State Tournament 48 Chase County 28 Won 31 Alma-Wabaunsee 37 Lost Girls’ JV Basketball 26 Hartford 34 Lost 19 Flinthills 23 Lost 26 Burlingame 23 Won 18 Madison 29 Lost 20 Mission Valley 48 Lost 19 Lebo 20 Lost 18 Olpe 32 Lost 56 MdC Valley 16 Won 14 Mission Valley 32 Lost B-Team Tournament 21 Dexter 23 Lost 21 El Dorado 23 Lost 25 Central-Burden 43 Lost 49 Queen of Courts 1981 50 Jacque Fosdick Jeff Thomas The 1981 Queen of Courts was held on February 20th. Larry D. With many of the other teams at Hesston being some of the states’ best 3A, 4A, and 5A schools, the Wildcats’ sixth place finish should not be underrated. As the season progressed, it became evident that balance and depth would become Heights’ main ingredient for a good track season. The Wildcats only non-winning performance the remainder of the season took place at the Council Grove Invitational where the Cats finished second to class 4A’s always powerful Abilene. Northern Heights’ winning string included the Burlingame Invitational, the Mission Valley Invitational, the Onaga Invita- tional, and the Lyon County League Meet-this was our best performance of the year. We ended the season a little older, a little wiser, but still just a few! Many underclassmen held key positions and scoring responsibilities. We all pulled for everyone else on the team. The girls ran new events; learned to jump or throw for the first time; and really worked hard. Although seeded sixth in the League Meet, we surprised everyone by finishing fourth, bested only by Olpe, Marais des Cygnes Valley, and Madison. At that meet, many of the girls ran, jumped, or threw personal bests, and it was by far our strongest overall performance of the year. Many thanks to all the girls who participated in track. 57 1. Front Row: Robbie Mundy, Scott Smith, Julie Stone The Fall of 1980 brought cross country to Northern Heights. The team was composed mostly of underclassmen and throughout the season ran a combined total of over 2,000 miles. The highlight of the year took place at the Rossville Regional meet where Heights did extremely well against stiff competition. The team placed 10th out of 13 teams. From this meet came the eventual 3-A state champions. Though the team scored well, the pride came as each of the Heights runners shattered their previous best two-mile time on the toughest course run throughout the year. BOYS Sept. 22 M.V.
