F 0 r e n s • 1 c s The Northern Heights Forensics Team and sponsor, Mr. Kayser, hosted the 1980 Lyon County League Speech and Drama Festival at Emporia State Uni- versity. Those who entered events at this festival were: Cindy Houck, Anne Lowder, and Kelly Martin. The regional festival at Topeka High School found Cindy, Kelly, and Anne performing well. In fact, Cindy and Anne received I ratings which qualified them for the state festival at Emporia State University. At the state festival, Cindy received a III and Anne received a II. Cindy read “The Waltz” by Doro- thy Parker. Anne recited her original oration which contained her thoughts about a possible World War III. All of the 1980 team were new to foren- sics, thus, it can be said that in spite of this team’s inexperience, its members performed well. B. Heine, L. Stanford, C. Houck, Mr. Kayser, T. Mize, S. Coming from the third ranked team to first in league was the highlight of the season. We faced times of strong disappointment and also shared times of glory and success, that number one feeling. The feeling of number one is not only the excitement, it is the feeling of 37 people; team members, coaches and managers, all in unity as one, all for one goal, for one purpose. All efforts, strengths, and energies combine and intertwine to accomplish or make something happen. When that one something happens, it is so good and great. Emotions climb and everyone is near greatness, that title of number one. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with and I am proud to have known Assistant Coach Anderson. Weightlifting Is Picking Up On February the 12, 13, and 14, the NHHS weightlifters competed against each other in an intra-school power meet. The lifters were divided into sev- en weight classes and were required to perform three lifts. The poundages were totaled and medals were given for the best three lifters in each class. Da- vid Karr-800 lbs., Charles Wyda-635 lbs., and Craig Dorton-955 lbs., won their respective weight class easily with high totals. All other lifters found the competition quite close as many win- ners were determined on the last day. Football Team Has Exciting Year 1. Wildcat offense prepares to attack Madis- on’s defense. 2. The 1979 Wildcat Football Team ended its season with a 6 and 3 record, finishing 4th in the Lyon County League. The Wildcats were impressive throughout the year playing every team intensely. Even the 3 losses were exciting and the victories were up for grabs until the final quarters. The Cats scored a total of 172 points and gave up only 118 points for the season. Standouts for the year were all-league selections Rick Newton, defensive line; Tom Lowry, defensive corner; and Chris Lowry, tailback. Chris also was honorable mention all- state for his 1000 yards rushing. Other seniors that deserve mentioning are Dave Karr, split end; Jim Melgren, 2nd team all-league free safety; Jeff Eck- elberry, 2nd team all-league center; and Craig Dorton, the best guard and linebacker to wear a black jersey at NHHS. Wes Lawton, sophomore, also was a 2nd team all-league offensive guard. % Sitting: Angela Dorton, Linda Moran, Linda Jackson, Brenda Martin, Brenda Elbe, Lizzy Schlesener, 2nd row: Dave Gold- smith, Dave Karr, Rick Newton, Jim Melgren, Tom Lowry, Craig Dorton, Greg Johnson, Brian Davidson, Jay Ogden, 3rd row: Wes Moreland, Jeff Karr, Jeff Thomas, Mark Kusmaul. The Wildcat Junior Varsity, led by Coach Randy Ackerman, posted another fine season going 4-0 against all league opponents. The team displayed a lot of poise, talent, and spirit and gave great hope for the future of the Wildcat football program. Probably the highlight of the season was a 12-0 rout of arch-rival Olpe. The Wildcats first scored on a 5-yard plow by Mike Collette and later in the fourth quarter on a 10-yard pass from Don Kayser to Jeff Thomas. If this season was any indication of what the future might be, then one would have to believe Northern Heights will be the team to beat in the fu- ture. 1. Chris’s biggest game came against Madison when he gained 211 yards on 22 carries and scored 3 touchdowns. Chris gives much credit to his offensive line, which consisted of four seniors and one sophomore, most of whom received honors in League. They were from left tackle to right tackle: Rick Newton, Wes Lawton, Jeff Eckelberry, Craig Dorton and Greg Johnson. At sub-state the Wildcats defeated Lyndon in semi-final play 73-54 but lost to Valley Falls in the championship game 44-54. Team accomplishments were co-champions of the League, 3rd place in the League Tournament, and sub- state runner-up. In appreciation the A-Team Girls decided to name them honorary captains on March 3, 1980, the first night of sub-state at Lyndon. Connie McKernan and Brenda Elbe All-League and Tournament Team The Northern Heights girls team had a fine 1979-80 basketball season. The girls finished with a 14-7 won-loss record. Five of the losses came at the hands of Olpe and Madison. Both of these teams competed in the state tournament. The lady cats finished fourth in league with a 6-3 record. In the league tournament the girls finished third. Heights will lose several seniors that did a great job this year. There will be several underclass girls returning to form a nucleus for next year’s team. They will have a challenge to maintain the high caliber of play the girls have upheld in the past several years. The B team finished with a 3-5 won-loss record. The invocation was given by Homer Melgren. A buffet-style dinner was served by the junior class mothers with the assistance of several sophomore girls. Following the meal, an acceptance speech was given by Jim Melgren, President of the Senior Class. Mr. Richard Robins directed an excellent speech to the Seniors while talking about the impossible dream. Mr. Homer Melgren gave the benediction. The dance followed the banquet and the music was provided by “V-100.” The theme for both the banquet and dance was “Driftin’ an’ Dreamin’.” The decorations included a multi- colored rainbow and on the stage were large white pillars with a white picket fence outlining the stage.
