Industrial Arts Club The Northern Heights Industrial Arts Club attended a leadership conference at Emporia High this year. While there, many ways to help the club were learned. These included Parliamentary Proce- dures, how to run a meeting, and general knowledge of the IA pur- poses. The 1978-79 officers were: Presi- dent-Laurie Robidou, Vice Presi- dent-Lisa Stanford, Secretary-Pa- tricia Barger, Treasurer-Kathy Bausman, Reporter and Sergeant at Arms-Kevin Karr. The club sent representative pro- jects from NHHS to the league In- dustrial Arts Fair held May 4. Jeff Schiesser received the highest award for his Governor Winthrop desk which was named Outstand- ing Project of the Fair. Jeff Weaver received a red ribbon for his stereo cabinet VO-TECH. VO-TECH The Flint Hills Area Vocational- Technical School is just one of many in Kansas. Vo-Tech is a place where one is taught a specific skill, not just given a general edu- cation. Vo-Tech gives students a future through career education. Students from Northern Heights at- tend Vo-Tech in the morning and Northern Heights in the afternoon. The classes being taken by students from Northern Heights this year are Auto Mechanics, Food Service, Graphic Arts, Distributive Educa- tion, Machine Tool, Office Occupa- tions , Vocational Agriculture, and Welding. Those graduating this year are Cheryl Baker, Rick Cantrall, Larry Jackson, Margie Leffler, Kevin Hannigan, Kyle Morris, and Doug Peterson. 13

FBLA Earns Four State Awards Fourteen FBLA members attend- ed the State Conference at E.S.U. on April 9th and 10th. Four state awards were earned by our chapter. The Parliamen- tary Procedure team, coached by Mr. Powell, won 5th place. The team consisted of Margie Leffler, Bob Lowder, Kyle Bur- ris received 3rd in income tax, Bob Lowder received 3rd in cal- culators, and Tawnee Buffum re- ceived 2nd in 10-Key Skills. New officers for next year were cho- sen. They are: Tawnee Buffum- President, Donna Crabtree-Vice- President, Joni Barber-Secre- tary, Rhonda Morfitt-Treasurer, Penny Burris-Historian, and Jon- ita Edmiston-Parliamentarian. 1. New officers are being sworn into office. 2. The state's 5th place Parliamentary Procedure team: Joni Barber, Rhonda Mor- fitt, Margie Leffler, Bob Lowder, and Kyle Burris. 3. FLBA members. Seniors Take The Prizes The Annual Polaris Style Show and Tea was held Thursday, February 1. The style show winners were: Phyllis Bush, 1st place; Cori Goff, 2nd place; and Kathy Riggs, 3rd place. Marcia Kusmaul was named as the freshmen division winner. The Polaris Club provided the judge and a gift of a year's subscription to sev- enteen magazine for the Home Economics Depart- ment. Forensics Team Receives II Ratings The Northern Heights Forensics team, sponsored this year by Charles Kayser, was comprised of two members: Margot Dietrich and Katrica Moreland. Both girls per- formed well in the league festival held at Emporia State University and in the regional festival at Beth- el College of Newton, Kansas. At festival a I rating means ex- cellent, and a II rating indicates very good. At Newton, Katrica earned a II rating in Oral Interpre- tation of Prose. Margot Dietrich earned II rating in both Oral Inter- pretation of Prose and Oral Inter- pretation of Poetry.
