Honor Society The purpose of Honor Society is to give recognition to outstanding academic students and to seek to be of service to the school and the community. Mem- bers of Honor Society are chosen on the basis of scholarship, leadership, character, and service. The Wildcat chapter of the National Honor Society began the year by selling activity calendars. They also were in charge of concessions at all home football, volleyball, and basketball games. The money earned was used to buy 23 new books for the school library. On May 15, 1979, five new members were added to this chapter of the National Honor Society. They were Joyce Maxwell, Richard Nurnberg, Don Reust, Wayne Stewart, and Jeff Thomas. Model United Nations Model U.N. Three countries were represented by Northern Heights at Model United Nations on November 1. Those countries were Indonesia, Sudan and Tunisia. Topics that were debated included Human Rights, and Dis- armament. Emporia State holds Model U.N. every year for the pur- pose of acquainting high school students with the structure and function- ing of the United Na- tions . Debate At the beginning of this year, the Debate team was given the resolution — Resolved: the Fed- eral Government should establish a comprehen- sive program to signifi- cantly increase the en- ergy independence of the United States. The NHHS Debate team par- ticipated in five tourna- ments. One tournament — at Washburn — was for novice debators. The four novice deba- tors were Brenda Hens- ley and Kevin Karr, and Jeff Horton and Donald Reust. The other four experienced debators attended two or three tournaments last year. Four tournaments were open in which novice and experienced debators could participate. The team which worked the hardest and showed the most improvement was Jeff Thomas and Joyce Maxwell. 11
