Mem- bers of Honor Society are chosen on the basis of scholarship, leadership, character, and service. The Wildcat chapter of the National Honor Society began the year by selling activity calendars. They also were in charge of concessions at all home football, volleyball, and basketball games. The money earned was used to buy 23 new books for the school library. On May 15, 1979, five new members were added to this chapter of the National Honor Society. They were Joyce Maxwell, Richard Nurnberg, Don Reust, Wayne Stewart, and Jeff Thomas. This chapter is sponsored by A. Elwin Powell. HONOR SOCIETY. Front Row; J. Melgren, C. Oliver, N. Mel- gren, K. Kaniper, C. Goff, K. Riggs, J. Stewart. Second Row: J. Horton, J. Eckelberry, P. Three countries were represented by Northern Heights at Model United Nations on November 1. Those countries were Indonesia, Sudan and Tunisia. Topics that were debated included Human Rights, and Dis- armament. Emporia State holds Model U.N. every year for the pur- pose of acquainting high school students with the structure and function- ing of the United Na- tions . Debate At the beginning of this year, the Debate team was given the resolution — Resolved: the Fed- eral Government should establish a comprehen- sive program to signifi- cantly increase the en- ergy independence of the United States. The NHHS Debate team par- ticipated in five tourna- ments. One tournament — at Washburn — was for novice debators. The four novice deba- tors were Brenda Hens- ley and Kevin Karr, and Jeff Horton and Donald Reust. The other four experienced debators attended two or three tournaments last year. Four tournaments were open in which novice and experienced debators could participate. The team which worked the hardest and showed the most improvement was Jeff Thomas and Joyce Maxwell. 11 FBLA Earns Four State Awards Fourteen FBLA members attend- ed the State Conference at E.S.U. on April 9th and 10th. The classes being taken by students from Northern Heights this year are Auto Mechanics, Food Service, Graphic Arts, Distributive Educa- tion, Machine Tool, Office Occupa- tions , Vocational Agriculture, and Welding. Those graduating this year are Cheryl Baker, Rick Cantrall, Larry Jackson, Margie Leffler, Kevin Hannigan, Kyle Morris, and Doug Peterson. 13 Seniors Take The Prizes The Annual Polaris Style Show and Tea was held Thursday, February 1. Forensics Team Receives II Ratings The Northern Heights Forensics team, sponsored this year by Charles Kayser, was comprised of two members: Margot Dietrich and Katrica Moreland. Both girls per- formed well in the league festival held at Emporia State University and in the regional festival at Beth- el College of Newton, Kansas. At festival a I rating means ex- cellent, and a II rating indicates very good. At Newton, Katrica earned a II rating in Oral Interpre- tation of Prose. Margot Dietrich earned II rating in both Oral Inter- pretation of Prose and Oral Inter- pretation of Poetry.
