The Cats more determined than ever, came back the same week to beat Burlingame, 8-0. In the second overtime against the Flinthills Mustangs, Clayton Jenkins made the deciding extra point to finish the game, 13-12. The team then traveled to Thayer, to con- quer the Flyers, 19-0. The eights Has Second tables slowly turned when the Wildcats visited Mission Valley. The Cats yielded a 6-12 loss, after four, wet, grueling overtimes, on the Viking's rain-soaked field. The team returned to their home field to play the Olpe Eagles for Homecoming. Tough luck plagued the Wildcats, and Olpe was able to defeat them 44-14, handing Heights their only league loss. The Wildcats then traveled to Madison for another league game. After four short quarters, the Wildcats brought home another victory, defeating the Bulldogs, 34-19. Travel- ing to Waverly, the Wildcats looked for a tough game, with the Bulldogs having a record of 6-1 overall. The defensive squad brought home the honors, scoring three touchdowns and blocking a punt. At the end of the fourth quarter, the Wildcats went home with a 33-12 win and a sure second place in the Lyon County League. November 4 was Parent's night and the last high school football game for the NHHS Seniors. The First half, the Wildcats were held to a 6-0 lead over Lebo. Final- ly, at the end of the fourth quarter, the Wildcats left the field with a 22-0 win. Bob Williams headed the Wildcat team and was aided by assistant coaches; Ed Bowen and Randy Ackerman. 28 Winning Season — Second Again In League 29 Dorton, G. Heine , C tony J. At half-time with the score 32-8, Olpe's favor, the band marched onto the field and formed a heart to accept the king and queen candidates. Those chosen as candidates were: Annette Clark escorted by Tony McKinsey, Cathy Choate escorted by Steve Mel- gren, Rhonda Hansen escorted by Roy Smith, and Kathy Shope escorted by Joe Frederiksen. Kevin Dorton, the fifth candidate escorted last year's queen, Terri Besack. The band's fanfare rumbled, tension mounted, and Rhonda Hansen was chosen the 1977 Homecoming Queen. Once again the drums rolled and Joe Frederiksen was honored as King. After a difficult struggle in the second half, the 'Cats, not accepting defeat, scored again, but to no avail. They yielded a 44-14 loss. The Homecoming dance helped lift everyones' spirits. At the beginning of the year, each team is given a resolution. This year it was, Resolved: That the federal government should establish a compre- hensive program to regulate the health care system in the United States. At the Debate meets, the team formally argues for or against the resolution. Their argu- ments are based on lines of reasoning that are supported by evidence. Although this was their first year, Mr. Powell, feels that the members have gained the ability to analyze, organize and to stand on their feet while expressing themselves logically and rationally. Ann Lowder was notified by the Kansas State University Extension Office that an article she wrote about her experiences as Lyon County Fair Queen was accepted for publication in the June issue of the KANSAS 4-H JOURNAL. 54 DEBATE: First Row: David Karr, David Goldsmith, Jeff Eckelberry, Jeff Thomas. School Gets “Yankee Fever” Damn Yankees. is based on Douglas Wal- lop's Book-of-the-Month selection, The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant. It was performed by the Northern Heights Cast on November 18 and 19. Joe Boyd makes a statement that he would sell his soul for one long ball hitter for the Washington Senators. To fulfill his wish the Devil appears and gives him an offer. He changes old Joe into young Joe Hardy, who will bring the Senators out of last place. Joe Hardy plays for awhile and the ball team becomes undefeated, but Joe misses his wife, Meg, and finds himself wanting to get out of the deal with the Devil. There is a nosey newspaper re- porter named Gloria Thorpe, who is pry- ing into Joe's background and Joe has no peace. The Devil doesn't want to turn Joe back and he wants the Senators to lose, but he gives in to Joe and allows him to have an escape clause. Unfortunately, the Devil turns Joe back into Joe Boyd during the Pennant, but old Joe saves the game by catching the ball that would have made them lose. Joe Boyd goes back to his wife and leaves the Devil very unhappy. The play was under the direction of the following people: A. Elwin Powell—Direc- tor, Richard Robins—Music Director, Betty McDonald—Choreography, Jan Jen- sen—Costumes. CAST OF CHARACTERS Joe Boyd Meg Boyd Jill Leeburg Mr. Applegate ... The play is a comedy about the zany Sycamore family who live in a house where you do as you like and no questions are asked. Martin Vanderhof, the patriarch of the family, is fondly known as Grandpa. He epitomizes the unique philosophy of the play, Life is kind of beautiful if you let it come to you but the trouble is people forget that ... Grandpa has raised his family to live as he believes life should be lived. To make the play a success, over 100 practice hours were spent.
