Lots of study and a very quiet atmosphere? Well man forget that old fashioned idea, and get with it! ! The following pages are devoted to our school and our way of studying . You might as well forget the idea of quiet atmosphere the way we dodge around in the halls between classes trying to avoid running over all the beautiful people here at Heights. Lots of study?? Oh, come on now! We do study, but are usually too busy having fun until six weeks ends and we find (oh dear) that we haven't studied enough for that big, big, important test that means absolutely everything to our grade. Then comes the next phase: Last-minute cramming and worrying. Oh! School Life! Don't get us wrong now, but all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. But who's Jack? School can be a real blast if you let it and this year was an example. Wasn't it? Why sure it was! ! ! Man, what a night! ! ! You wouldn't believe what I just sat in. Did you Catcher in the Rye???? Here I am world. This is going to hurt me more than it is you! Locker Love-in. Now try it on your nose! What do you mean there isn't a Santa Claus? Happy Birthday, Jack! IS; But I always study this way! Look at me, I'm a DADDY! ! ! ! Why dirty dishes? Leg watchers! Oh, REALLY! Rush Hour! ! ! ! Maybe she'll graduate THIS year! The Senior girls aren't ALWAYS on their toes. Well, neither are the Senior BOYS! ! 8 Juniors Present “Heaven Can Wait” Joe Pendleton . Mr. Jordan . . Messenger 7013 Julia Farnsworth Tony Abbott . . The routine was inter- rupted by the arrival of Joe Pendleton, a prize fighter, W'ho refused to admit he was dead, and persuaded Jordan to look at the records which re- vealed that Joe wasn't scheduled to arrive for an- other 60 years! But, as Joe starts to return to earth to continue his fighting, word reached Heaven that Max Levene, Joe's manager, thinking he had been killed, had Joe's body cremated and Joe had no body to return to. Jordan returned Joe to earth in the body of Jonathan Farnsworth who was murdered by his wife. The comedy began when Farnsworth un- accountably went into training as a fighter. In ad- dition he decided to share his wealth and right the wrong the real Farnsworth did to Bette Logan's father. Bette found herself falling in love with Farnsworth and he with her. Just as Joe (still in Farnsworth's body) wras about to get a chance to be- come a fighter, Jordan reported that Farnsworth did not approve of Joe's treatment of his body (and money) and was raising a fuss to have it back. While deciding on another body for Joe, Jordan received a flash that K.O. Murdock, the champ, had been shot. As K.O. was about to be counted out Jordan transferred Joe's spirit in the body of K.O. Joe really became Murdock and lost memory of his pre- vious existence--including Bette. Fortunately they met, and fell in love again--and Mr. Jordan was free to head for the Hereafter, his earthly task accomplished. 10 Football Homecoming Homecoming 1969 may have been a chilly evening, but the Wildcats triumphed over the Olpe Eagles 24-6. Before the game Miss Rael Schlesener, a Senior candi- date, was crowned as Homecoming queen by last year's queen, Miss Mary Pearson. Donna Duncan, also a Senior, and Carol Duncan, a Junior, were the other two candidates. The girls were chosen by the football squad and were escorted by Donald Whittredge, Paul Whittington, Tyson Gilbert, and Bruce Day. The following Saturday night a dance was held in hon- or of the Royal Party. Donald Whittredge was crowned King by Queen Rael. He was chosen by the pep club which also sponsored the dance. FREEMAN'S READY TO WEAR EMPORIA. KANSAS MARTIN MATERIAL OSAGE CITY, KANSAS Polaris Style Show Every year all the girls leave school one afternoon for the annual Polaris Style Show sponsored by the Po- laris Club. Those that made garments and participated in the styling know that all those study halls were not given up in vain. The girls knew that they couldn't all be winners but they had fun trying. This year our win- ners were Rael, June, Dianne, and Kathy. We would like to thank Mrs. Burri and the Home Economics Stu- dent Teacher, Miss Miller, for all their help, and also the Home Living class for the nice tea given after the style show. The Home Living girls found that their time spent baking cookies, and washing up all those dishes was well worth their effort. HOWARD’S FABRIC OSAGE CITY. KANSAS LORRAINES STYLE SHOP COUNCIL GROVE. Our meetings were led by our president, James, while Jacque kept track of the minutes and Dianne the money. Carol served as Vice-presi- dent, Rita as reporter and Corky and Rael as Historians. Even though this is only the second year since the NHHS, FBLA Chapter was reorganized, with the help o c Mrs. Peterson, each member worked to make this organization a success. They participated in such activities as regional and state FBLA con- vention and several placed as winners in the tests that were given there. To top off '■he year's activities, the FBLA sponsored a St. Patrick's Day party given to the entire school. HARRIS DRUG EMPORIA. KANSAS SNIDER MOTOR COUNCIL GROVE. KANSAS StuCo Just what is Student Council all about? Most of the kids think it’s just another class office, but it s not. First of all, Student Council is made up of one boy and one girl from each class (which makes for interesting business meetings). Also these people are representatives to the Brass and make the rules and guidelines for us, the student body. The head man is Paul Whittington. The other Senior representative, Jacque Calhoun, is Vice- president. Rita Burns and Kevin Fehr, who are Juniors, serve as Secretary and Treasurer. The Sophomores are Vesper McCabe and Milton Spade, and last but not least, are the Freshmen, Cary Coffman and Brian Stinson. StuCo is effi- ciently supervised by Mrs. Burri and you can be sure that anything they set out to do, gets done right. This year's busy activities included the Christmas party, selling candy, which was good but very fattening, and trying to convince the faculty that a sock hop WAS necessary after home basketball games. So you see Student Council really is important to us and to our school. BUCHMAN’S GROCERY COUNCIL GROVE. KANSAS BRETZSHOES COUNCIL GROVE. KANSAS COLBY’S TOGGERY COUNCIL GROVE. KANSAS STATE FARM EMPORIA. KANSAS 25 We’d like to tell it like it is with the poor, overworked, and under- paid annual staff of Wildcat Tales. It sure is hectic just before deadlines because everyone rushes to get everything done on time, and sometimes we just don’t quite make it. Our world of dummy sheets, gutters and bleeding pages is as nerve-wracking as last minute cramming for a big test. As Donna and Dianne are struggling with copy blocks for Activities and School Life, James is trying to find a picture that will fit one of his pages of sports. Meanwhile, Norma and Chuck are busy clicking their cameras, and assistant editor, Rael is fighting with paper and ink for the annual cover. While all this is going on, Jacque is calmly making up our ad pages and Corky is trying to fit all the classes into their proper places. This busy activity is supervised by our editor and leader, Bruce. But of course without Mrs. Peterson nothing would get done. Special thanks goes to her and to Mr. Kauffman, representative from American Yearbook Co. 1ST NATIONAL BANK OF HARVEYVILLE MILLER ELEVATOR OF MILLER Wildcats Win Battles But Lose The War Twenty-five boys reported to the new coaching staff of head coach Bob Masters and assistant coach Jim Pykiet. The first week of the 1969 season was a week of conditioning without pads. The team then went into pads to start the rigorous training for the first game with Eskridge. Their sacrifices re- warded them with a hard fought 12-6 win over the Dragons. The Wildcats then proceeded to drop the next four games to White City, Luckey of Manhattan, Roosevelt, and Madison. Heights bounced back for a Homecoming victory and their first league win against Olpe. The Wildcats then traveled to Rossville and were beaten by the Bulldogs 30-6. Heights fin- ished the season on a winning note by beating Lebo, cham- pions of the tough Tri-Lakes League, 26-6. Since this is the year for telling it like it is we are going to tell you like it is with seniors. We're kind of scared and at the same time happy. We go through the excitement and frustration of senior pictures, announcements, etc. We hurry to get things in on time to meet deadlines. Pages to be done for the annual and dues to be paid. Life as a senior is very much like life as an underclassman but much more hectic. Our last year will not be forgotten for a long time. And that is how it is w’ith seniors. Congratulations, Mrs. Peterson for a job well done. This year our halls are filled with love, Mr. Love that is. This shy and quiet man has a lot of traumatic experiences. Mr. Love's patience is tried with his English I, III, IV, Speech I, and Dramatic Arts classes. He directs the Junior and Senior plays too. We hope that Mr. Love has found our school and students pleasing to his nature. Home Economics There is a very familiar face in our school this year. It is none other than Mrs. Burri. This dedicated lady spends most of her time in the Home Economics Department. She teaches Foods, Cloth- ing 1,11, and Home Living. She is also the StuCo sponsor. If you ever have a problem with ripped jeans or need a punch recipe, we all know who to ask. Mrs. Burri has as an assistant this year, Miss Darlene Miller, a student teacher from Kansas State Teachers College. Industrial Arts Still another familiar face is Mr. Leeds; the competent head of our In- dustrial Arts Department. He has a wonderful sense of humor but is so shy he hardly says anything. He teaches Shop I, II, III, Mechanical Drawing, and Auto Mechanics. Also, he is the Senior class sponsor. This page is de- dicated to a wonderful guy, Mistah Leeds! Mathematics Mr. Pykiet may not be ICiown for his size but when someone has as much wit as he does you don't really .need size. Some may think he's tougmbut we hope his bark is worse than his bite. One thing about Mr. Pykiet-- he doesn't look down on people. He teaches Algebra I and II, Geometry, and Advanced Math as well as being Assistant coach and Sophomore class sponsor. There is a great man among us in this school. Not only in size but also in ability. This man is none other than Mr. Robins. He heads our fine Music Department by teaching music theory, chorus, and band as well as sponsoring the numerous musical groups. He is also sponsor of the Junior Class. His loud and biting growl can be heard ringing through the halls, but as everyone knows, he doesn't mean everything he says. Science Another new face on the scene is Mis. Springer. A friendly and orderly lady who teaches all the subjects of science, includ- ing General Science, Biology, Chemistry, and something new this year, Advanced Biology. Besides carrying all these subjects, she also sponsors the Pep Club. Way to go, Mrs. Springer!! English IIA nd Library Has anyone noticed a jolly little man running up and down the halls between 4th and 8th hour? That little man is none other than Mr. White. Those that have English II or are in the library know that he is a brilliant and very humorous man. He's the one that writes funny passes and lightens the hall with his bright smile. Espanol There is a little lady in our school that hardly anyone knows. Mrs. Rooth may seem shy and bashful to us that don't know her, but according to those that do, it's a complete- ly different story. The reason for her absence during most of the day is that she also teaches at Reading and Americus. This lady with her bubbly personality teaches Spanish I and II. fi Helping Hands This is Mr. Betty Schmidt, our always cheerful, helpful secretary. Gene's helpers, Julie Reddig, Chuck Jones, and Tom Collins work after school to keep Heights clean but occasionally they use their utensils for other purposes. IVAN DAYHOFF OSAGE CITY. KANSAS BOYCE BLACKSMITH ESKRIDGE. KANSAS Sometimes we students gripe about what time we have to get up in the morning but our distinguished bus drivers, Marion Jackson, John Hedburg, Cletus Whittington, and Gene Wallace are up even earlier to make sure we arrive before the bell. Gene Wallace, the custodian, is the jack-of-all-trades around this school. He does everything from helping de- corate for parties to cleaning up after ball games and is always willing to lend a helping hand. Oir cooks, Mr. Dunn and Mrs. Jackson, take time out to plan the day's meal.
