Mary Prunty N ursing Associate Degree Nursing has emerged as a forceful segment of the American sys- tem of Nursing Education and celebrated its twentieth anniversary during 1972. In 1952 there were seven programs— today there are over 500. NECC joined the com- munity college movement across the nation in offering an. Associate Degree Pro- gram in Nursing severa l years ago. Since the program’s inception we have educated and graduated well over one hundred students. These skilled “Registered Nurses” are now functioning in a myriad of places, where patients who require nursing care are to be found. In medical centers acute care areas such as intensive care units, coronary care units, recovery rooms operating rooms, medical and surgical wards, out patient departments, Nursing homes, physician offices and in school health departments. Nursing practice has become very complex— along with the rest of our world . . The nature of society and its prevailing values have brought about major and radi- cal changes in the nursing profession . . The kind of knowledge needed by the nurse twenty five years ago was tremendously different from that needed now. The nurse is no longer the candle-toting angel of mercy, the semi-missionary, or the hand maiden to the physician. NECC nurses are activists, possessing creative qualities, sensitivity and in- tellectual skill. They can assess a patient’s nursing needs, make critical life-saving judgements, and collaborate with other disciplines in planning and implementing patient care. 97 Physical Education Mary Kane Mike Cowles Marcia Clement Bill Hickey 98 Discovery OOEP Discovery is a one-semester transitional program for people who want to go to college but have been out of school a long time or do not meet the usual college entrance requirements. The discovery students come from many backgrounds, dif- ferent educational experiences, and different age groups. Many graduates of Dis- cover) ' are now ' successful students in the college’s associate degree program. This year the OOEP program has broadened the services offered to the precollege population. A new and expanded GED course helps people who didn’t finish high school prepare for a high school equivalency certificate at their own pace. An English as a second language course helps foreign-bom area residents learn English skills. A neighborhood Outreach course helps recent high school dropouts “turn-on” to education. OOEP has also added occupational information, vocational counseling, and job placement activities to the services available to NECC students.
