President’s Message This yearbook will document another good year in the story of Northern Essex Community College. It is the fourth year of publication. The students who worked on the early issues are now gone from our campus, leaving a heritage of pleasant memories that are evoked each time I open one of the books. Many of them return to tell us of the new experiences they are having as they break new trails across the landscape of their lives. All of them inquire about the students now in the College. It is a pleasure to tell them that our present students show the same good qualities of high motivation and superlative achievement that marked their class. Each year our numbers increase. Each year we send more students from our classrooms to serve a world where both need and opportunity increase as mankind’s wisdom and understanding reach to further horizons. It is a tre- mendous privilege for me to share with you in your development and growth. No position held by anyone can give greater satisfaction than that of president of an enterprise where young people cross new boundaries, and where the chief criterion is maturity of mind, spirit, and body. You come to us as young people of promise. You leave us as those who cross the threshold into manhood and womanhood. There is a feeling of severance as you go away from us. Yet there is no sense of pain or unease. We have only a feeling of pleasure that you have accomplished your ob- jective and are now ready to reach for the next level of beckoning privilege. Yours is a generation for which a key word could be privilege. The people of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts have helped subsidize your higher educa- tional experience. People of deep social consciousness have given time and effort as members of our board to see that your needs are constantly met. Legislators of both parties unite in giving our citizens the opportunity to learn to the optimum of their possibilities. This is the emerging new world of wide- spread privilege — and this world is yours! Our teachers, the office and maintenance staff, and our administrative personnel all wish you good luck, and are thankful to have known you. HAROLD DENTLEY 5
