LUMEN 1965 NORTHERN ESSEX COMMUNITY COLLEGE HAVERHILL MASSACHUSETTS Our association with Northern Essex Community College enables us to observe first-hand the growing awareness on the part of the American people that it is education that makes the man — the man who makes our society what it is today and what it will become. Although the community college is a relatively new ex- periment in the realm of education, it is becoming increas- ingly apparent that it is fulfilling a vital need as our young people not only realize the value, indeed the necessity, of education, but strive to attain it. So we announce as the theme of the Lumen 1965 “ Light Dispels Darkness,” symbolizing the light of education reaching out into the world. 2 Introduction to the College 7 Administration and Faculty 17 Graduates 31 Organizations 59 Social Activities 79 Campus Spirit 89 3 4 The Lumen 1965 is dedicated to the memory of Dr. James W . Thomson. Dr. Thomson gave unstintingly of his time and effort, becoming our friend and counselor. His enthusi- asm for youth, and his confidence in human nature, in- stilled in us courage to meet the challenges that determine our future. DR. JAMES W. THOMSON July, 1910-December, 1964 V J 1 “Enter to grow in wisdom ” Charles Willi im Eliot Incoming students have the opportunity to become acquainted with the College during Orientation Week. 8 At the annual Faculty Tea, newcomers are personally greeted by each member of the faculty and administration. Freshmen are welcomed by the upperclassmen as they are initiated in the traditions of the College. 14 The Bookstore is operated for the benefit of the students, books being sold at competitive prices and profits reverting to the Student Activity Fund. 15 I “A pause for a chat with the President. ” HAROLD BENTLEY, President of the College B.A., Penn College; B.D., Hartford Seminary; S.T.M., Boston University Our college was founded in October 1960, when your President was appointed. Since that time, many significant events have taken place. A great number of stu- dents have given of themselves to improve their educational outreach here in this old building. We have graduated two classes in the past two years. This year many of our former students are graduating from the next college to which they were transferred. A very fine group of teachers have moved into our college life and have given much in leadership and influence. Throughout the entire college a sense of expectancy is slowly developing. Now that we have received the grant of 1 1 1 acres by the city hall of Haverhill, we are assured of an imposing site for the great new college that is slowly moving towards us down through the years. What a pleasure it is to share in this great enterprise where we meet in a common search for knowledge and in a mutual development of understanding and concern for those values that make life truly worth living. The students who graduate this year will carry with them a full measure of pride as they leave this college. They will be able to walk in dignity and in self-reliance because they have accomplished so much that five years ago was not even in their dreams. The entire staff of the college wishes you well. We are all grateful to have shared in your joys and even in your tribulations during the past two years. HAROLD BENTLEY President 18 r MILO M.
