We quickly got into the pace of the school (some of us bought swimming pool rights), and we reacted to the first big crisis. Within two weeks of our arrival the issue of a live husky arose; the Student Council wanted one, the student body said Yes and the ad- ministration said No. So one tradition ended, but without knowing it another began, as some students brought the University of Rhode Island ' s ram to our first foot- ball rally, before the URI game. We were in the year of the first, our first ram, and our first mayoralty contest, with some guy named Jack Nixovitch winning. But with one Husky Dog question out of the way, another quickly rose, one that dwarfed all other husky problems. Should the new statue of the husky be sitting or standing? NEW SPORT For those too young to go to the Claw, the gathering place was the warehouse. Class seats near windows were at a premium to get a good view. WHAAA? Suddenly it appeared! There in the quad was a real live, rocket. Never could steer those things.

r ' KING HUSKY One tradition ended with the death of King Husky. However, there was some feeling that actually the King was sent to Alaska as part of an expedition. -, We were a large family, actually the largest ever to enter the University — 2015 in number. We brought with us the most scholarships, coeds, and best assortment of athletes to date — September , 1960. Somehow we were herded into the auditorium where we met, along with several others, our ad- visor, Dr. James Ryan. Ofthemall, Dean Kennedy still stands out in our minds, primarily for one brief statement, Look to your right and left, two of you will not be here for graduation. He ' s just trying to scare us, we thought. Little did we know. A NEW TRADITION BEGINS Ole Man Rom from URI made his first of many appearances at Northeastern during our freshman year. MAYHEM BREAKS OUT It was the first mayoralty contest for us. Below is Koss-o-Boo-Boo; the one on the left- no, the RIGHT.

THE ONE AND ONLY snow sculpture contest in our collegiate history had St. George and the Dragon winning the top campus prize. OH, BY THE WAY convocations. We were also expected to attend those While the debate raged on, we got an omen of things to come because our frosh football team routed the Springfield team 46-14. A few short weeks later the team completed its season tieing the University of New Hampshire by a score of 6-6, to record an 8-0-1 slate for the year. Right on the heels of this came the word from basketball coach, Dick Dukeshire, that he was rather impressed with the frosh team and that he had high hopes for the future. We elected our first board of officers headed by a girl as president. As spring approached a new sport was ini- tiated, warehouse-destruction watching. At all hours of the day, large crowds cheered as the guy in the crane swung his concrete ball, scoring pin- point hits against the side of the warehouse, as If it were easy to miss something that large. In place of the warehouse we were told there would soon be a parking garage. Then within a few short weeks we completed our 30-week marathon and we were sophomores.
