1 T I N English is his profession, but human under- standing and creativity are his convictions, and Professor Louis E. Roberts gave them to many of us with a v armth and intellectual fervor that has become part of us in memory and heart through the art which evolved in his classrooms. Many of us have known and appreciated Prof. Roberts, faculty advisor to the CAULDRON, our yearbook, The Nil Writer, our literary magazine, Pegasus, our poetry society, and the Northeastern NEWS, our weekly newspaper. In all, he traded with us, freely and forcefully, his wisdom for our growth. The artist was always present in him, from his Freshman English where we learned about Gogol ' s Overcoat to his drama course and Miller ' s Death of a Salesman. Those who never missed it will remember that his Joseph Conrad was rough reading, but it brought us one of the truly great writers of the world. We listen- ed to Prof. Roberts discuss American Literature and Conrad on the radio and always, we listened to a serious mind. Leaving this friend of litera- ture and students will not be a loss for the Class of 1965; we have him. The loss is with others in the future.

PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE It is a pleasure for me to extend my congratulations to the members of tfie Class of 1965. As you go forth from Northeastern, you join 37,000 other Northeastern graduates who comprise a very important segment of America ' s greatest resource β€” her educated men and women. As graduates of Northeastern University you are entering upon your careers at a time of great social upheaval. A new world politic is in the making and we are undergoing a transition from a society which had its roots in an industrial revolution to one which is now based on a scien- tific revolution β€” the age of science. The future peace and strength of our nation depends on the abilities of men and women like yourselves who can develop new social forms, ideas and the new political strategies needed to cope with the social problems of the new age in which we live. Because of the special kind of education which you have received β€” an education not pursued in isolation from the work-a-day world but rather in conjunction with itβ€” you are in a unique position to assume places in the commu- nity much more rapidly and with much more impact than many ofyour peers in today ' s society. The challenge to you is to make the most of your opport unities and to use your education and talents to the fullest. May you accept the challenge and may God instill in each of you a passion for excellence in fulfilling whatever may be your role. Asa S. Knowles President William C.White Vice President and Provost
