7 i W 14 commit MiUe ... ducation is the process of teaching one to think — using good old common sense. If education fails to do this, it is a u ' aste both from the teacher ' s and student ' s vie vpoint. It is to Professor Chester P. Baker, the speaker of these words, whom this CAULDRON is so proudly dedicated. Professor Baker joined the faculty at North- eastern upon receiving a degree in Chemical Engi- neering from the University in 1920. Since that time, he more than any other one man has been responsible for the effectiveness, grou ' th, and high morale of the Department of Chemical Engineering. In 1939 he founded and became the first chairman of this de- partment and to the present has been responsible for the conception, design and installation of the chemi- cal engineering laboratories throughout the campus. Professor Baker has published numerous papers in his field and has been honored by many national societies and lauded by many trade publications. The CAULDRON is honored to dedicate this book to Professor Baker Avho, after having come to Northeastern forty-six years ago vith the coming of the first CAULDRON publication, will retire this year leaving behind a praiseworthy history of dedica- ted service to Northeastern University and to the propagation of education in chemical engineering throughout the Nation.
