Going And so, moving on to the Junior year with a sigh very much resembhng one of relief, we became genuine upper- classmen. This was the big year for announcements of departure. Leading the list was Dr. Ell, who was about to retire, having celebrated his seventieth birthday the previous year. Dean Herrick announced her departure too, returning to her native Jackson. Joining the mass egress was Col. Harris, to be replaced by Col. Davis. Also leaving the scene was the Boston Opera House, which had been torn down the previous summer. Replace- ment plans were yet to be made when we flew the Quad- rangle in i960 (we were beginning to think it was to be a Faculty Parking Lot from that time forth and forever more). This year the class sponsored a Junior Dinner-Dance, and in a weak moment the Powers That Be decided to call it the Junior Dinner-Dance. Imagine! The Masque did a lovely, lovely Carousel this year, hav- ing presented a most happy Oklahoma the previous year. It ' s unfortunate that they were so fast running out of the cream of R H ' s crop, but it ' s good they did so while we were around. ( The King and I is apparently impossible. To finance it they ' d have to mortgage Rich ards Hall, and to give the King a haircut they ' d have to fight a militant Co-op Department. ) Going T3b ' tktmmtKKBKSsr '

There was even a line to give money to the Husky Statue Fund. Russian educators visited NU to learn the co-op system. So then we became Seniors, and were finally at the top of the heap (there was of course the premonition that we ' d soon be pushed off, but . . .). The year was started with much pomp and circumstance by the inauguration of Dr. Knowles. Then too there was the opening of the Graduate Center, and its decidedly welcome cafeteria. There was an all-out drive for school spirit, with an NU flag design chosen and a new Alma Mater com- posed. Also, the Student Council began a campaign for a Husky Statue, selling pins for the Cause. ' Twas rather vague what on earth was to be done with the statue once they got it, but crossing that bridge was still pretty hypo- thetical anyway. Continuing its purchasing program, the University ac- quired the Boston Stotage Warehouse, beside the had- been Opeta House. As of graduation time it stood firm — very firm — and was still apparently engaged in hous ing whatever wares a warehouse houses. In the winter Joshua Logan dropped by to give the Masque some tips on presenting Fanny, which they staged as the year ' s musical. The Masque was rather more successful with Fanny than Logan was with the play he was trying out in Boston at the time. Fanny closed after two nights ( as planned ) — and Logan ' s show in New York came close to doing so. ( unplanned ) . The International Relations Club and the Student Union worked up a highly successful model United Na- tions. That is, it was successful when it finally took place, the weekend befoie being snowed out. Because of said snowstorms (which cancelled Friday classes too, miracle of miracles) the scheduled appearance of Eleanor Roose- velt didn ' t occur. Dean Dissell took over as Dean of ' Women, migrating here from Dean Herrick ' s Jackson. And the Student Union gave Dean Melvin a cake to celebrate his 40th year at Northeastern.
