President ' s Message To the Class of 1959 : This message has particular significance to me because it is the last opportunity I shall have as President to address an outgoing class through the pages of the Cauldron. This fact might readily bring an element of sadness, but instead I feel a sense of pride in the thought that North- eastern is sending out into the world over nine hundred educated men and women from this Class with talents and training which can work wonders in the next fifty years. Mrs. Ell and I have had our own lives greatly enriched by our many contacts with the Northeastern family; now, joining you as alumni, we look forward to continued and closer rela- tionship. I cannot omit from this greeting a word of appreciation for the many thoughtful expres- sions of affection from you as students during the months since I announced my resignation. These expressions have touched me deeply and will always be a treasured part of my life. As you go out from the University where you have spent the last five years, there stretches ahead a future filled with priceless opportunities for all of you. Some of these opportunities are financial, giving you the means of fulfilling many of your desires; some are educational and cul- tural, helping you to enjoy a richer life; some are in the priceless possession of family and friends, enabling you to share with loved ones the joys and sorrows of life; some are in the na- ture of active religious, civic, national, or social service. It is my hope that you will bring to all of these opportunities a strong moral and spiritual approach, that you will have courage, balanced judgement, and self-reliance in the decisions which you must make. It has been said that the beginning of all excellency lies in the determination to make the best use of one ' s self. May the members of the Class of 1959 make the best use of their talents and contribute notably to the excellence of the world. [6]

The night drifts down on quiet wings; Invisible forces move the Earth. No mountain is, and no bird sings But something underneath, behind, Supports its being, tells its worth Though all the world be blind. ; : - v55 Mrs. Carl Stephens Ell [7]
