Class of 1952 is the first to feel the impact of the GI Bill of educational program which . its first influx of Veterans into .ileges in the Fall of 1946. This .Liating class is composed 75% of V eterans whose record of prog ram com- pletion and scholastic accomplishment has been a convincing answer tc critics of the GI Bill who saw small hope that educational programs undertaken under that bill would be carried to completion by the men and women embarking on them. In every field of adult education, par- ticularly in the Evening field, there is always concern about the number of students who fail to finish each year ' s work, and the number who do not complete full Degree programs on which they embark. It is a problem that constantly concerns the administration at Northeastern, but to a lesser degree than elsewhere because the percentage of completion both of annual programs and of full Degree programs here has been one of the highest in the entire country. The Class of 1952 has con- tributed substantially to establishing (Continued on Page Three) [2] NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF BUSINESS CARL STEPHENS ELL, A.B., M.S., Ed.M., Sc.D, President of the University EVERETT AVERY CHURCHILL, A.B., Ed.D., Vice-President of the University ALBERT ELLSWORTH EVERETT, S.B., M.B.A., Dean of the School of Business ADMINISTRATIVE COMMITTEE ALBERT ELLSWORTH EVERETT, Chairman FRANK M. PRE5C0TT, FACULTY ADVISOR PHOTOGRAPHS BY ALVES STUDIOS [3] DR. CARL I welcome the opportunity through the pages of Northeastern Nights to congratu- late the students of the School of Business, and the Senior Class in particular, as another college year draws to a close. You have the advantage of being able to equip yourselves for life through the process of education. You who are being graduated will continue to learn, of course, but you have reached a definite milestone in your educa- tional career. Your mental fiber has been strengthened, hardened, and toughened by your study here at Northeastern. You have problems; the members of every graduating class have faced them. They are the natural accompaniment of being alive. You come to Northeastern to learn how to meet and to solve problems, not how to avoid them. The solving of them is the process that gives sparkle and zest to life. As college men and women, you are expected to be constructive thinkers and workers in your fields of specialization and in your communities. The privilege of obtain- S. ELL ing a college education carries with it the responsibility of being a good citizen. Northeastern University has grown even during your college career. It has increased and refined its programs, enlarged its physical properties, and become more effective in the field of education. However, Northeastern can never be more progressive than the fore- sight of its Corporation; never more brilliant than the teaching and research of its faculty; never more comprehensive or penetrating in its programs than the capacity of its students to understand and to master; never higher in public esteem than the accomplishments of its alumni. I am confident that Northeastern will con- tinue to meet the needs of the times and to be an ever-increasing power for good. I am also confident that the graduates of the School of Business through their achievements will add honor and strength to the University. CARL S. ELL, President Northeastern University [4] ALBERT E, EVERETT THIS, I BELIEVE — What a challenging statement — and how provocative when it is posed to each one of us personally as a question. How stimulating it is to listen weekly on this radio program to the beliefs of men who have made significant contributions to our society. As you listen, isn ' t there a ten- dency for your thoughts to turn inward with the question, I wonder what I would say if similarly called upon? Every man at some time in his life wrestles within himself for an answer toward the formation of a credo for his life in which he endeavors to relate himself to the Eternal and through the Eternal to his fellow man. His subsequent ability to express in action those things which he inwardly believes to be true measures the degree of his success to live in harmony with himself, in contrast, mediocrity is symbolized by a confusion or lack of belief, while failure to respond to one ' s inner judg- ments results in frustration and unrest. The transition we are witnessing in our Western civilization is an example on a uni- versal scale of the inviolate nature of truth. It represents the failure of man to face up squarely to his true relationship to his fellow man, for people do not attempt to escape from something that does not exist or with which they have lived in harmony. The current social revolution cannot be stopped by force of arms but by convictions in the hearts of men based upon true beliefs. As a result of several years of close working relationships with evening school students, this, I believe about you. Even though in terms of your life span your stay at Northeastern has been short, I believe that there is a serious purpose motivating your actions; that you recognize the basic precepts for a useful life and unconsciously, at least, have made a start toward a clarification of your credo; that now, possessing through education the basic tools for your professional career, you will use them wisely as a good citizen, bringing honor upon yourself and your alma ' mater; that you will find true happiness by expressing your beliefs through your actions and in some measure — large or small — will contribute to the general welfare of mankind. ALBERT E. EVERETT, School of Business Dean [5] T. PAUL CONNOLLY PRESIDENT CLASS OF 1952 As the academic year 1951-52 draws to a close, we of the Senior Class cannot help but entertain a certain feeling of nostalgia as we allow ourselves a few moments to reminisce on the years just past. These memories are pleasant indeed but mingled with them are the unanswerable questions as to what the future may hold for we who now as graduates will proudly carry the banner of Northeastern into our business communities. We can but resolve to do all within our power to uphold the traditions in which our University is so deeply steeped and attempt to maintain the high standards established by our predecessors. In our years at Northeastern we have seen established, nurtured, and solidified countless friendships among our fellow students. We have witnessed the physical plant of our School increase and have been privileged to partici- pate in this growth through contributions to our Library Fund. This project has progressed during our tenure from the drawing board to the beautiful edifice now ready for occupancy. We feel that we have grown proportion- ately, being richer in knowledge, ideals, and accomplishments. Our class numbers among its members people from many different walks of life but our undergraduate years have merged this heterogeneous group into a solid phalanx. This great leveling process was some- thing over which we had no control but of which we are tremendously proud, the spirit of the Evening School of Business. We trust that our undergraduate friends will cherish this gift and appreciate, as we have, that it has no equal in any other evening school. WILLIAM B. PIERCE VICE-PRESIDENT SECRETARY DOROTHY R. LOWE Now, as the largest graduating class in the history of our School, we, the class of 1952 take our places among the Alumni of North- eastern University Evening School of Business. We trust that our attainments have qualified us for this honor and feel sure that our progress will justify this confidence. We would like to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt thanks to those who welcomed us as freshman and who guided our scholastic careers over the years that followed and which had this moment as its goal, our graduation. We refer of course to Dean Everett, Dean Mallion, and to each and every member of the Faculty, all of whom by their under- standing and patience provided the support so necessary to see us through our undergraduate years. MEMORIES FOR THE YEARS AHEAD The 1951-1952 Student Council is reaching the end of its orbit, and a review of its course is presented. We started off with our WELCOME WEEK, October 1, 2, and 3 — remember the coffee and doughnuts! Next, the HARVEST DANCE at the Hotel Statler on November 10. Then came December, and we entertained the children of our student body at the KIDDIES ' CHRISTMAS PARTY on December 1 5, — (toss up as to who had the more fun, the children or the committee). February, the month of hearts, presented a VALENTINE ' S DANCE, and we gave Spring her welcome with our SPRING DANCE at the Hotel Continental on March 29. We close our year with the glamour event of the year, the ANNUAL PROM, and then give way to the 1952-1953 Council, our orbit completed. One of the purposes of the Student Council is to try to add a little frivolity to the arduous task of earning a living and of obtaining an education at the same time. By the same token participating in and attending the social activities sponsored by the Council gives students a chance to become better acquainted with fellow classmates, and to take with them a few pleasant memories of lighter moments. Our main purpose in attending North- eastern University is the better to equip our- selves for the task of earning a livelihood; but the value of friendships formed during the six years cannot be discounted; it is as important a part of our academic life as are the textbooks. Being a member of the Student Council is one way of getting acquainted with other students. The friendships that are made will more than repay for the work and effort involved; and I hope more students will take an active interest in the extra-curricular activities at Northeastern. Credit for the success that the Student Council enjoyed this year goes in full share to each member of the Council. As President, I want to thank all the. members for the hard work and the cooperation that made us a successful team. My special thanks and appreciation go to Dean Everett and to Dean Mallion for the ever-open door, the guidance, and the advice. LYNNE MAKI President, Student Council [46 J HATS OFF TO THE PAST; COATS OFF TO THE FUTURE! This American proverb has special significance at this time of the year to you who are members of the class of 1952. Vou are approaching Com- mencement, a turning point in life when you may well pause a moment to contemplate the past and look forward to the future. Seldom in the history of our nation have we been faced with problems as serious as those which confront us in these troubled times. The world and our nation need men with vision, men with the qualities of leadership, men trained for specific tasks and with a will to follow through and carry a job to successful completion. Each generation has pro- duced such men in times of need and as the Pilgrims of 1620 and the Minute Men of 1775 turned from their long established routines, saluted the past and faced the future with vigor and determination, so must you gird yourselves for future leadership in industry and the community with a will to make the world a better place for your having passed through it. For the past several years you have been working steadily and faithfully to acquire the foundation upon which to qualify for this leadership. We congratulate you upon your efforts and your success in reaching this goal. We of the administration and faculty know that you do face the future with your coats off and sleeves rolled up. We wish you success every venture! GEORGE A. MALLION Assistant Dean School of Business EVENING EDUCATION and YOUR JOB NORMAN H. GREEN, Through the very nature of my work it has been my good fortune to become quite inti- mately acquainted with many of you. This opportunity of working with you has given me a lasting satisfaction, for through it all I have recognized that most of you have been working to complete your education while facing real problems of life. In numerous cases these associations have resulted in memories that I shall long cherish. If in some measure I have been of help either through counsel or place- ment, I have been amply re- warded by the satisfaction I have received through serving you. Remember that even though your study is completed and you have gone forth with your degrees, your University will always be anxious to assist you as you progress in your respec- tive professional careers. The service of the Place- ment Office does not end with the graduation of a student, it is a service for all of the School of Business family as long and as far as it may be called upon. It is here to help our Alumni in the problems of the jobs they hold or when they need or seek changes in employment. It is here to serve the business, in- dustrial and professional com- munity by sending to employers men and women of the Alumni who by virtue of their North- eastern training and other knowledge and ability may be expected to meet specified requirements, and to be of increasing value to their new employers. NORMAN H. GREEN, Placement Officer Evening Division [47] SOCIAL ACTIVITIES I N WELCOME PARTY GUESTS CHATTED AS THEY ATE The story of social activities of the School of Business for the 1951-52 school year is a record of herd work, well done. As usual, activities began with the Welcome Party in October with coffee, cider and doughnuts as part of the at- traction as the Student Council played host to about 1500 stu- dents and faculty at the get- acquainted function. The official committee in- cluded, among others, the Stu- dent Council President Orrin Dunn, Secretary MaryCunning- ham, George Bettencourt, John Arnold, Francis Begley, Charles Falzone and Lawrence Man- ning. Unofficially, the entire Student Council pitched in and helped out fetching, carrying, serving and cleaning up. The Harvest Dance held Saturday November 10 in the Georgian Room of the Hotel Statler attracted a larger at- tendance than any previous Student sponsored party with the exception of Proms. Over seven hundred people filled the SOME DANCED LIKE THIS AND SOME LIKE THAT [48j REVIEW 19 5 1 19 5 2 Georgian Room and overflowed into adjacent parlors. In addition to the Students, their Wives, Dates and Guests, a considerable number of the Faculty were present, including Dean Everett and Mrs. Everett and Assistant Dean Mallion and Mrs. Mallion. Music was supplied by Billy Reeve ' s Or- chestra. Door prizes were pre- sented by Lynne Maki, Student Council President. The affair was arranged by a Student Council Committee headed by George Bettencourt. Santa, Northeastern style, arrived right on time December 15 at two o ' clock, as the Student Council he ld its third annual Christmas Party in the Commons of the Student Cen- ter Building. The small ones along with their elders num- bered about 400; a substantial increase over previous years. Two more appropriate mov- ies closed the show, and then Santa (John Christensen) Clous, properly benign, took over to distribute gifts and to list Christmas presents to be hoped fo r. Afterwards came refresh- ments of ice cream and cookies. Socially, January was a quiet month as all were recuperating from their New Year ' s Eve festivities, or concentrating on Mid-year examinations. February brought along with the snow, an excellent dance turnout with over one hundred couples attending the Valen- tine Dance Saturday evening, February 9, held in the Com- mons. The surprisingly large crowd well attested the past good work of the Student Council, which boosted its bat- ting average considerably with the program offered by the dance committee with John MacSwan chairman, Mary Cun- ningham in charge of decora- tions, George Kinsman, John Scolamiero, Tom Callahan and Orrin Dunn. The Hannifan Trio of Weymouth supplied the music. The annual Spring Dance was held on March 29 at the Hotel Continental. The walls bulged as over 250 couples, in- cluding a generous showing of faculty and wives, danced to the sweet notes of Frank Rogers and his orchestra. The committee was Chair- manned by Dante DeTeso, as- sisted by Joseph F. Marotta and Gerald Dello Russo. Senior elections were held on April 1 with lively contests for all offices. Timothy Paul Con- nolly, William B. Pierce, James _A. Suggs and Dorothy R. Lowe emerged as President, Vice- President, Secretary and Treas- urer respectively. As the Year Book goes to press, the Senior Prom remains to be held as the climax of the year ' s social program. Not a matter for the social record, but important to be in- cluded in the achievements of this year is the final chapter of the New Library story — one more evidence that North- eastern gets things done. The Class of 1952 saw the Library project snatched out of the proposed files and put on the in progress board. They had a part in the fund raising, they saw ground bro- ken, foundations laid, steel rise, wails enclosed, barricades removed, work begun on re- storing beauty to the quad- rangle, and even a preview of the premises at Commence- ment time. Perhaps this example that, their Alma Mater does for her- self the practical things which she tries to teach her children may be on inspiration to 1952 to go, and do thou likewise. BATESON Pi Tau Kappa! What has it meant in the past year and has it as a fraternity contributed to the general progress and development of the individual, Northeastern and the Frater- nity? As we review the year we believe that Pi Tau Kappa has maintained its role of fraternal fellowship and it has extended its membership to include more of the men of Northeastern. Fraternity-wise it has had a very active year, enjoying a meeting every month, excellent speakers, and a most enlighten- ing program. Our membership has increased and news con- tinues to be received of pro- gress mode by individual mem- bers in their respective fields. Our chapter made a three year pledge to the Library Building Fund. We believe P.T.K. should be included in the development program of the University. Alpha, which is the Boston chapter of the Fraternity, is to be the host at the Annual Competition which is to be held at the Hotel Kenmore on May 17. This event is the yearly assembling of the four chapters — Alpha; Beta, Worcester; Gamma, Providence; and Delta, Springfield, whereby they com- pete ritual-wise for a plaque given by the Governing Board. This affair also includes a Tea, in the afternoon, for the wives and sweethearts of the mem- bers, a Dinner and a dance in the evening, attended by invited guests and the members. The officers of Alpha Chapter are: President, Linclon C. Bateson ' 50; Vice-President, Michael D ' Orlando ' 52; Secretary, S. James Kentley ' 50; and Treas- urer, Russell Lipton ' 52. The Governing Board of the Frater- nity includes: Governor-Gener- al, Paul C. Thelig, Delta; Vice- Governor General Roy Johnson, Gamma; Secretary-General, Roger Haskell, Beta; Treasurer- General, Frederick A. Beyer Jr., Alpha; Historian-General, Ro- bert Welch, Delta; Editor-in- Chief, James A. Dickerson, Gamma. LINCOLN C. BATESON President KT Kappa Tau Phi Sorority, now celebrating its 17th birthday has enjoyed a very pleasant year. The members of the so- rority, although not large in numbers, did ring up a record year by their steady attendance on the third Saturday of each month. The aim of increased membership was not realized this season, but with the able assistance and suggestions of Dean Everett, we will be able to accomplish this next year. We are going to offer a much more varied social program. Friendship is the main key to our Sorority, but this is also supplemented by an annual award to the highest ranking sophomore in the School of Business. President Kathleen McTier- nan, offered a new program this 1951-52 season, in that the business meetings were al- ternated by a entire social event the following month. This has been received with much en- thusiasm by the present mem- bers and as a result we had a Fall theatre party, Christmas social, Spring re-union and the year ended with a week-end in Manchester, New Hampshire. KATHLEEN McTIERNAN President KATHLEEN McTIERNAN [52] THE GRADUATE DIVISION Established in September, 1950, the Grad- uate Division of the School of Business is completing its second year of operation. The current enrollment of 296 students marks a sizable increase over the previous year. The program is the answer to a continuous demand for advanced courses to provide a basis of training for the intermediate and policy level responsibilities of management. Included in the study body are graduates from thirty-six (36) different colleges or universities of this and foreign countries. The under- graduate backgrounds also reflect a cross section of education with representatives of business administration, engineering, liberal arts, law, and hospital administration. The design of the program is unique. The courses are designed to cut across the major phases of operation and control which con- tribute to planning and policy making. Basic to each student ' s program are courses in production, distribution, finance, industrial relations, organization and control through accounts. These ore supported by other courses in economic theory, the ever increasing relationships of government and business, problems of taxation which determine policy, the history and philosophy of economic and industrial development, with other courses designed to meet specific needs of the students.
