A Message to ifcke Class of 1950 Yours has not been the tradition- al, orderly college course progressing continuously from freshman to senior year. For most of you, the work has been accelerated; you had to drop your college programs at varying stages, spend from one to four years in the armed services, and then come back to pick up the broken threads of formal education. You are going out into a world that is pilled with confusion — a world in which the need for leader- ship is no longer academic but acute; your generation is faced with an unparalleled challenge. Many of you know from actual observations abroad that you are fortunate to be living in America. You are also privileged to have had the opportunity to get a college ed- ucation. Your mental capacity, your train- ed intellect, your heritage of Amer- ican birth, and your youth all place upon you duties and responsibilities. To help you meet this challenge, I point out the following guideposts: First, I hope you will think of your education itself — your trained mind — as an asset which is yours forever, which cannot be taken from you, and which can be im- proved and increased in quality and scope from year to year. Second, hold to your own ideals. Let others scoff, if they will, because you reach for the stars; but aim high and hold to your aim. Third, William James once said that men habitually use only a small part of the powers which they possess. Let it never be said of you that you failed to succeed in life because you did not use your full ability. It will be for you to decide how you will use the greatest asset which you will ever have — a trained mind. The old virtues of honesty, courage, and sincerity are just as important today as they ever were; in fact, the less evident they seem, the more important it is that college men and women hold them in high re- gard. You will, I am sure, meet life ' s challenge in a way that will make us all proud. CARL S. ELL President
