It was with this purpose in mind that the ' 45 Club was organized, with membership made up of men who registered with us as Freshmen, and those who joined our class later by transfer. The ' 45 Club has served its purpose effectively during our school years by sponsoring activities for all members. Under our permanent officers we are looking forward to continued activity and association in the years to come. Allen W. Abbott Navy Joseph F. Ahearn Army Maurice J. Ah earn Navj ' Delmo F. J lstoVy ' FRESHMAN In the fall of 1940 the country was sing- ing MacNamara ' s Band, cars were lining the highways, the Presidential Campaign was sweeping the country, the RAF was fighting the battle of Britain, and 871 neophytes were having a battle of filling out cards at Northeastern. No student will ever forget those first three days when cards had to be filled out, advisers met, tests taken and phys- ical examinations endured. When we look back to those days they remind us of what we are experiencing now — Selective Service examinations. However, we weathered the storm and prepared to start studies the fol- lowing week. Many of us journeyed that weekend to Freshman Camp at which many lasting friendships were acquired. None of us will forget being called out of bed at 11 o ' clock to see the movies or the chase of the upper- class in which we showed that our class was to be one of unified spirit. During our Freshman year we held two dances. The first, Freshman Frolic, was held at the Hotel Continental with music by the Bacchs. At this dance we selected Miss Lois Hayward escorted by Leland Sibley, .now Mr. and Mrs., as Northeastern Uni- versity ' s Honorary Co-ed of the Class of 1945. As the first affair of our class it proved very successful. Our second affair was the Freshman Formal held at the Belmont Country Club. This dance proved to be the biggest affair of our Freshman year and had the distinction of being the only affair run by the class which had no red ink on the books. Our class did not have too successful sports this year but we provided much needed material for the varsity teams of the future. It was during this year that Dr. Ell was inaugurated as President of the University at impressive ceremonies held at the Opera House. We also witnessed the breaking of the ground for the New Building which is the second of the proposed unit of seven. Richards Hall was also dedicated this year. FRESHMAN OFFICERS First Row, left to right Ryan, White, Goldie Second Row, left t right : Ahern, Cheever Douglas, Prof. Me SOPHOMORE Many changes in the world took place during our Sophomore year which influenced our actions greatly. The entire student body listened apprehensively to the declaration of war after Pearl Harbor. Many of our class- mates were already in the service while many others were preparing to enter, while no one knew just what the future held for him. It was during this year that our new mas- cot, King Husky II was presented to the University after the short reign of Queen Husky I. Our class supplied many men for the var- sity this year and made their presence known to no small degree. Among them were Bob Otenti, Will Shannon, Gabe Connors, Bob Maker, and Walter Hurley. The only dance which the class held this year was the well attended Battle of Music featuring Baron Hugo and his Society Fa- vorites and Sandy Sandiford and his Knights of Harlem. The big attraction of the dance was the presence of Nell Giles, who during the evening selected a Smooth Susan and Smooth Stephan from those present. All in all, everyone had a good time. Under the very enthusiastic leadership of Jim Shanahan the ' 45 Club was organized in the later part of our Sophomore year and this club has functioned continually since. MIDDLER Under the new accelerated program some of us attended school for the first time dur- ing the summer months. It was indeed a new experience trying to concentrate on studies on a warm summer evening. Because of the immediate pressure of the war our class had very little activity this year. However, all the classes combined and with Jim Shanahan as chairman the All University Ball was held in the main ball- room of the Copley Plaza. Roly Rogers ' Orchestra supplied the music, featuring the singing and trumpet stylings of Joan Hunter. The big event of the evening was the ap- pearance of Dixie Dunbar whom we ac- claimed as the girl Northeastern boys would most like to take away with them. The ' 45 Club, as a fitting sequel to the dance, held a buffet supper in the Sheridan Room. Although the food wasn ' t what was expected, it nevertheless served to get many members of our class together for the last time before entrance into the service. r r -i r SOPHOMORE OFFICERS First Row. left to right: Leach. Shan.ihan. Sec- ond Rom, left to right: Maker, Long, Prof. Me- serve, Cheever, Phil- lips. During the summer the main attraction was the Softball games held in the back of Richards Hall. Many an eventful game was played, making the summer term more en- joyable. JUNIOR A second All University Round-up was held this year as a farewell to the last of the Army Reservists. The evening was spent with Softball games, in which the ' 45 Club Chemicals won the championship, labora- tory exhibits, movies, and dancing. The highlight of the evening was the hobby- horse races with students and faculty riding the horses. Mr. Seavey of the Mechanical Engineering Department showed us his pro- ficiency by winning the races. Although Junior Proms are out for the duration we held one of our most successful dances during our Junior year. This dance was held at the University Club on Hallow- e ' en Eve with Alan Curtis supplying the music and Ted Cole the vocals. The big surprise of the evening came when Jim Russo introduced the Merry Macs. This group entertained us with songs which were en- joyed by all present. They proved to us why they are one of the top entertaining groups in the country. As major activities have been curtailed, the class this year contented themselves with Softball games, swimming, and basketball. The actions shown on the diamond, espe- cially by the faculty, will long be remem- bered. One of the advantages of having classes in the summer (so we thought) was the pos- sibility of holding classes out-of-doors. The Sociology class one day tried this and as the hour rolled on, some began to wish that the class was inside in order to escape the heat. SENIOR Because of the accelerated program our Senior year is but twenty-four weeks long, which accounts for no class activity until the Senior Week. For this affair we elected a committee of ten with Hank Bishop as chairman. We are looking forward to this last week together during our college years, as this will be a week never forgotten. Except for those who chose the co-opera- tive plan for their final year we as a class are graduating one year earlier than expected. MIDDLER OFFICERS First Row. hit to right : C h e e ver, Shanahan, Durakis, Maker. Scc- ond Row. left to right: Philips, Webster. SENIOR COUNCIL ond Row left to right: Profitn. Sleeper, Knowl- lon, TomainI, Kopsiaf- During these four fast years at Northeastern we have seen many changes come to us, the University, and the world. We have become mature in an immature world ; the Univer- sity has added one building, admitted co-eds, trained the ASTP ; and the world was shaken with the worst war in history. We also saw sane people go berserk trying to figure out songs like Hut Sut Song, Pistol Packin ' Mamma, and Mairzy Doats. This war has come close to us, for we have seen our classmates leave — some, never to come back. And now the rest of us are leaving the doors of Northeastern behind us to go out into the world to help in as many ways as we possibly can to win this war. We realize the task that is before us and we know that it will be hard but we will do our utmost to speed the day when once again all people can live in a free world. JUNIOR OFFICERS First Row. left to right: Bis.hop, Cheever, Dura- kis, Russo. Prof. GeargG H. Meserve, Jr. .-Arduise to the L iaSd of ' 45 Professor George H. Meserve, Jr., was born on June 7, 1902, in Medford, Massachusetts, where he now resides with his wife and two sons. In 1925 he was graduated from Northeastern, with the degree of Bachelor of Civil Engineering, under the four-year plan; later he returned to Northeastern and received his B.S. degree in Civil Engineering in 1931. At Boston University in 1940 Professor Meserve received his Ed.M. Professor Meserve came to Northeastern as an Instructor of Civil Engineering in 1926, became an Assistant Professor of Drawing in 1931, and Associate Professor in 1940. He served a short time as Assistant Director of Student Activities in 1926. Active in professional societies and social organizations, Professor Meserve is a member of the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education, Massachusetts Epsilon Chapter of Tau Beta Pi and past member of the Advisory Board, Boston Business Art Club, and past President of the Boston Aquarium Society. In addition to his work at the University, Professor Meserve has served as Civil Engineer at Mil- ford, Draftsman of the Boston City Planning Board, and Chief-of-Party for Norfolk County. At present his duties as Field Representative of New England for ESMWT take him away from our class as adviser ; but after a short stay in Washington he will be stationed here at the University for his work throughout New England. During Professor Meserve ' s absence. Professor Eliot F. Tozer has acted as our adviser. We take this opportunity to thank Professor Meserve for his advice, assistance, and association through our college career; and to thank Professor Tozer for helping us during these last weeks of our Senior year. jvimoy Jjavice owiwiltt First Row. hit to right: Durakis, Russci, Profita, Sleeper. Letter awarded for the 1942-43 season. The 1943-44 season brought to Northeastern the youngest and least experienced track team in the history of the University. The team was composed of three veterans; the remainder were freshmen. As a warm-up, most of the squad were entered in the Y. M. C. A. Open Meet. Some of the N. U. men succeeded in taking places, with first being captured in the dash and the shot put. Two weeks later, the only school meet of the winter season was held at Bates College. Supported by V-12 trainees, Bates swamped the N. U. contingent by taking six out of nine first places. Ernie Mills scored firsts in the three and six hundred yard runs, and Alfred Nicholson easily won the shot put. Nicholson, a seventeen-year-old freshman, had been state schoolboy champion in this event for three successive years. On March 2, Ernie Mills and Nicholson went to New York to participate in the IC4A track meet. Nicholson won a third place in the shot put, to give Northeastern three points for the afternoon. The last meet in which the whole squad took part was the New England Championships. The games were held for the first time on the Y. M. C. A. track. Herbert Nickless took a second place in the 1000 yard run, and Nicholson a second in his event. Two other places went to North- eastern athletes in the 600 and the high jump. Coach Tatton and Coach Bowen worked hard with their boys, to build a fine team. Of the group the outstanding athletes of the winter season were easily Mills, Nickless, and Nicholson; and their services were greatly appreciated by the coaches and the rest of the squad. Cooney, ' 48 Robert S. Welsh, ' 48 Marjorie Lundfelt, ' 48 The fall of 1938 found Northeastern without a nautical organization, but when the University was invited to take part in a regatta at M. 1. T., as a non-member of the Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association — two students — Ray Dion, ' 40 and Art Hartford, ' 40 — represented Northeastern on their own. They won the regatta. And they won again when they unofficially represented the N. U. the following spring at Brown, winning the I. C. Y. R. A. non-member championship plaque for the second year. With two victories in a tough competitive field stowed away, the boys felt confident in going to Professor Parsons in the hope of organizing an official yacht club. They soon received his sanction, and Prof. Rudolf O. Oberg was appointed adviser to the group. After dominating the field of associate members for a year, N. U. joined the major league of yachting when the invitation to membership in the I. C. Y. R. A. was extended in May, 1940. The club now competes against some twenty-five colleges, in the East, and extending as far west as the University of Michigan. Practice in handling the boats used to be held at M. I. T. only Saturday mornings, but now there is general sailing and racing daily at the Community Sailing Boat Club. From the bumperboard racing results our top skippers and crews are selected to represent the school at regattas, and top bumperboard skippers are awarded charms at the annual winter banquet. The Interclass Trophy was put into competition last year, and was won by the Class of 1944. MYRON JAFFEE, ' 48, President DAVID HAMBLEN, ' 48. A. certificates. As a result of the number of graduates from similar N. U. Firing Schools during the past two years, the National Rifle Association gave the N. U. Rifle Club a War Service Award in recognition of service generously contributed toward victory in the present war. The intercollegiate shooting occurred in January and February with postal competition against R. I. State, Yale, W. P. I., and US Coast Guard. Victories were scored against R. I. State and W. P. I. Shoulder to shoulder shooting took place against the Harvard Employees, and the team also participated in the William R. Hearst Civilian Marksmanship Trophy Match. if {Oirtkea tem f iHe e earn Second R First Row, Ult to right: Bindman, U.ihn. Ji left to right: Clark, Woodberry, Kiipfi C.ihn. Jafle. Wetmore. Lovejoy. With Lillian Kolodiz as organizer the Omega Sigma was started. This group is open to all co-eds of the University and at present the member- ship totals 60. The girls have organized a basketball team which plays at the Y. W. C. A. This, along with various receptions and meetings with speakers, has constituted the activities of this new organiza- tion. The officers include Hannah Rothschild, President; Marjorie Faunce, Vice-President; Norma Levine, Secretary; and Virginia Hadley, Treasurer. The Executive Committee includes Hannalore Oswald, Rita Ginsberg, Marjorie Lundfelt, Evelyn Griffin, Steph- anie Chopek, and Grace McKinlay. Rather than having officers, the club has used a system of revolving chairmen, with the chairman of each weekly meeting presenting his paper and leading a discussion on it. The topics discussed during the year included The Meaning of Literature, The Meaning of Poetry, Message Writers, and the book Native Son. The club has a membership of sixteen interested students, with Professor Frederick W. Holmes acting as adviser. L keiS L lub Under the able direction of Professor Coolidge, the Tuesday and Thursday meetings of the Chess Club were well attended by fol- lowers of this ever-popular game of skill. Beginners were taught the fundamentals of the game and the old timers pondered over new and complicated moves of strategy in an attempt to some day defeat the good Professor, At present, a Chess Tournament is being held to find the best chess player of Northeastern. Approximately twenty men are en- tered in the play. Leading the group this year were Jack M. Hochstein as Presi- dent and Arnold H. Carlin as Secretary. c=JLaiu and y ccountina L iub War has made students of Business Administration scarcer than rubber tires and yet Northeastern has twenty-five members in its Law and Accounting Club. The interest displayed by the present BA ' s seems to indicate that they are all able and studious men Many prominent business men have been guests of the club in past years. This year a luncheon was held at the Cafe de Paris on February third. The group had as guest speaker Mr. Walter W. Cunningham, Weekly Magazine Editor of the Christian Science Monitor. That well known authority on matters of law and accounting, Professor D ' Alessandro, is the Adviser of the group. President Joseph Annunziata, ' 45 BA; Vice-President, Edward F. In its policies and its programs, the Club cooperates with similar organizations at Wellesley, M. I. T., Harvard, and Tufts; and with the Student Center at Harvard University. This year the major club activities were an all-collegiate dance at Christ Church in Cambridge, series of supper dates at foreign restaurants; and a spring outing. The officers are Vincent Corapi, ' 46E, President; Frank D. Folino, ' 46E, Vice-President; and John B. Morrice, 48LA, Sec- retary-Treasurer.
