We have worked to produce a better book. While the final judgment of this statement lies in your hands, we can assure you that we have produced a different book. The difference is the result of the designed layout of the book and of necessity for changes due to the pressure of war on the University ' s peacetime activities and organizations. Our sincere and ceaseless efforts are locked within these covers. Your approval and future pleasure are our reward. Robert E. Leonard, Editor-in-Chief Paul W. Cameron, Business Manager John E. Instructor in Mathematics GLEN H. BOWERSOX, A.B. Teaching Fellow in Chemistry Galen David Light On June 30, 1943, Mr. Galen D. Light retired from his position of Secretary- Treasurer of the University. Although few students had any direct association with Mr. Light, he was a familiar and respected campus figure. He will be missed particularly at Commencement, where for years graduating Seniors received their diplomas from his hands. Mr. Light had been a part of Northeastern since 1901. After serving as Registrar, he became Bursar in 1908, Secretary of the University in 1916, Secre- tary of the Board of Trustees in 1920, and Treasurer of the University in 1932. Representing not only the Class of 1944 but all Northeastern men, the Cauldron Board hereby pays its tribute to one of the builders of our University. 23 24 eniot Elmer E. Haskins Adviser to the Class of 1944 Professor Haskins was born August 1, 1904 in Dighton, Massachusetts. He graduated as an honor student with a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree from Northeastern University in 1925. Later, in 1930, he studied at the Uni- versity of Pittsburgh and received his Master of Arts degree. In 1938, he con- cluded his college studies at Boston University where he became a Doctor of Philosophy. His career as a teacher of Mathematics began in Fairchance, Pennsylvania in 1925 and continued through Monongahela High School in Monongahela, Penn- sylvania from 1926 to 1930. In 1930, he returned to Northeastern University to become an Instructor in the Mathematics Department. Here, he became an Assistant Professor in 1936 and an Associate Professor in 1942. He is active in professional societies and social organizations and is a member of the American Mathematical Society, the Society for the Promotion of Engi- neering Education, and the Dalhousie Lodge A.F. and A.M. In 1936, he married the former Miss Louise R. Gebhard and they, together with their children, David Richert, age 4, and Cynthia Ann, age 1, make their home at 53 Damein Road in Wellesley Hills, Massachusetts. From our freshman days in 1939, Professor Haskins has skillfully guided and counseled us in our class activities and group functions. His sincere and congenial nature has made him a warm friend to all who have known him. We, the Class of 1944, feel fortunate in having such a leader to guide us, and we appreciate his tireless efforts for the more full and successful college life he has given us. 26 Junior Prom Committee First Row. left to riehf. Our first day was spent ac- quainting ourselves with the ways of the University and layout of the buildings. We were placed on the threshold by speakers who addressed our group, and were formally introduced to our Class Adviser, Professor Haskins, who told us some of his unforget- able jokes. On the second day, we found ourselves as an undignified group progress- ing slowly through a maze set up in the Y. M. C. A. gymnasium for our physical examination. Then on the last day of our orientation period, we really got our first taste of college curricular, and we were ready to start our five-year course for our For the finishing touch to three days of registration and orientation, many of us went to Camp Massapoag during the weekend preceding the opening of classes. New ac- quaintances were made with the faculty and with classmates, while canoeing, swimming, and participating in the numerous other ac- tivities that were provided. Campfire dis- cussions and bull sessions in the evening after retiring will be remembered indefi- nitely. We held our class meetings in Jordon Hall, where we elected our class officers and started to lay plans for financing future ac- tivities. At some of these meetings, we found that some believed in a contribution system, for pennies were collected on the stage on several occasions. We could not participate in varsity sports, but our Freshman stars broke track records while the team went on to a successful sea- son. Our football, basketball and baseball teams showed new material which was to provide the backbone for future varsity teams. The Freshman Frolic, which was run at the Country Club, was one of our biggest affairs of the year. Later the Stinking Four made themselves known when they proposed and executed Bigger and Better Beards. They judged the results of a week ' s growth and made up the sissy list for all those whose complexions approached that of a school girl. One of the best remembered episodes was the blizzard of February 14th. Many of us were snowbound before we could get home and had to abandon customary modes of transportation and adopt new ones, or put up for the night along the way. The fol- lowing day classes were called off for one of the few times in the school ' s history. FRESHMAN OFFICERS First Row, left to right: Greenwood. Chesley. Second Row, left to right: Ward. Cameron. Horn, Prof. Haskins. 68 SOPHOMORE Upon returning for our sophomore year, we found changes immediately evident. The University had made a new large library for us. There was also a change in ourselves. We were a more confident group, both in our place at the University and in the possi- bility of completion. Newly-elected officers promoted a success- ful informal dance on the Hotel Bradford Roof. The main feature of the dance was the Kiss-o-graph which was concocted by some of our classmates. Later, in June, we ran for ourselves a new and different type of social function — a Moonlight Sail on the S. S. Steel Pier. The class will not forget the announcement in the class meeting in- forming us that the staterooms had recently had glass doors installed in them. Along with our class, the University itself was actively engaged. Our new President was formally inaugurated, after proving his worth for many years in the role of Dean of Engineering. The West Building, in which most of us were attending classes, was dedicated as Richards Hall. Between this building and the Y. M. C. A., we could see the steam shovels and trucks making the foundation for the second of the plan of buildings proposed by the school. Although Pearl Harbor was still in its planning stage, we could feel the effects of the war starting to creep into the Univer- sity. Some of our well-liked Professors who were Reserve Officers were being called to the colors, and Selective Service was trying to decide the steps it would be taking in re- gard to college students. During this second year, many of us started a new experience in Cooperative Work in the field for which we were study- ing. We found ourselves in a situation sim- ilar to that of our Freshman year, for we were again with new faces and undertaking a somewhat different work. However, with the passing of a few weeks, we had made new friends and had gained practical expe- rience to supplement our training at the University. Our class provided top men for all ath- letic activities and caused uneasiness for vet- eran varsity members in some of the key positions. When all the results were tabu- lated, the teams showed an average season with a nearly equal record of wins and losses. MIDDLER Now that we were veterans of the campus, we returned to Northeastern ' s own and pe- culiar Middler. This year we started on another dance which we titled the Middler Mishap. This affair, which was held in the Princess Ballroom at the Hotel Somerset, constituted our major class activity of the year and resulted in a good time for all concerned. Pearl Harbor had now plunged our country into war and we were operating SOPHOMORE OFFICERS ' ,-, : Prof Haskins. slcv. Woodward, leron. Watts. Stand- : Roberts, Wrisht, Johnson. 69 under war conditions. Reserve Officials from every branch of the Armed Services visited the school seeking our enlistments. Many of us signed up and were sworn into the various branches and were placed in an inactive status temporarily. The need for men being more urgent in several of the branches, many of our classmates were called to duty while at the same time others were being drafted. Our number was gradually decreasing. JUNIOR With the half way mark tucked under our hats, we started our fourth college year. We didn ' t come back as we had done previously, but instead in a new accelerated program which was designed to cut off six months from our graduation date. Those of us in Division A found that the new program caused us to swelter from the summer heat in Boston ' s streets, but we found diversions when Softball caught the fancy of most of us. Many a hard fought game was played behind Richards Hall by Sections, Fraternities, and Faculty. The games played by the Faculty were especially interesting and many a surprised look could be found on the faces of the student spec- tators when one of our veteran professors would drive the ball well over the outfield- er ' s head. This was our big year for class activities, for we had to make plans for our Junior Prom, the high point in our class functions. We finally chose the Imperial Ballroom of the Hotel Statler as the place, and after minor disputes and long deliberation we agreed to have Jack Teagarden and his or- chestra supply the music. This prom turned out to be one of the most problematical in N. U. ' s history for even with tickets in our pockets we were still perplexed by gas ra- tioning, transportation shortages, and OPA officials. Many ways and means were de- vised by our group and all who decided to go found some means to realize their deci- sions. The snow storm during the evening caused many a couple added inconveniences yet the fun from the evening ' s festivities could not be spoiled. This Prom was the last class function for many of our class- mates before they were called to the colors and it was fitting that it should be such a success. SENIOR We were now Seniors and when we looked about we found that our whole class had been whittled down to less than two hundred. Nevertheless, we went on with our Senior Activities and chose Tom Ma- honey as the chairman for our Senior Week Committee. We held our Senior Prom in the LaSalle Moderne Room of the Hotel Statler and danced to the music of Roly Rogers. The turnout was not too large, but the atmosphere set up by the group topped all preceding dances. The following eve- ning we all congregated at the Hotel Ven- MIDDLER OFFICERS First Row. left to right: Home. Prof. Haskins, Bower. Second Row. left to right: Wone. Watts, Hilton. The high points were the comedy put on by Senior Chemicals, the piano and singing renditions by Woody Hogan, and the professional entertainments. Numerous parties sprung up after the Ban- quet was officially over to produce further good times for most of us. When it was all over we gave our whole hearted approval to the whole affair and to the men who pro- moted it. We were all together again in the second semester and we held another dance at Long- wood Towers for the Seniors who were leav- ing in the E.R.C. for active service. The group again was small, but the dance lived up to the precedent set for our Senior year. We were now in the closing session of our college activities, and with graduation but a few weeks away, we could afford to look back. We had completed studies for a degree under some of the most unusual con- ditions in the history of Northeastern Uni- versity. We saw co-eds enter all colleges, sports curtailed for the duration, numerous special training courses spring up, and the Enlisted Reserve Corps come in. Ours was an experience never lived by the Alumni, but one which will live with us forever. R. E. L. JUNIOR OFFICERS First Rom. hft to right: Ches ey, O ' Neill, Prof Has kins, Saum eigle Clea y. To Messrs. Waid and Miss Dempsey of Waid Studio for their cooperation. To the Student Activities Department and Miss Peppard, Miss Knight and Pro- fessor Pugsley, and other depat tments and secretaries, for their patience and assistance ; and to faculty members for their friendly assistance. To Edwin M. Burger and S. Gunnar Myrbeck who helped materially with their col- lection of informal pictures. To John T. Dizer, Jr., for his asssitance in typing when our customary help was not available. To Anthony Coscia who assisted our Business Manager in securing advertisements even though he was not a regular member of the Board. The Board feels very deeply indebted to Mr. Russell Knight of the Stobbs Press, for his wealth of experience which was so readily available and so generously given. We are grateful for the assistance of Joseph V. Annunziata and Andrew C. McCracken, who, knowing that they could not be editors of the yearbook next year, nevertheless worked hard as members of the Junior Staff. We appreciate the assistance of our Faculty Adviser, Professor Everett C. Marston, whose skillful guidance and wealth of experience enabled us to produce this yearbook. To the many friends of the Class of 1944, we wish to show our sincere appreciation for the services afforded us and we hope that they can find some satisfaction for their efforts in these pages of the 1944 Cauldron. 74 c UViti w First Row, left to richt: Gross . The six-week course contains in- struction and practice in the prone, sitting, kneeling, and off-hand positions. At the end of the course a written examination is given. An N. R. A. certificate is awarded to those who shoot a score of at least 200 out of a possible 350, and pass the written examination. The officers are R. Gelles, President; M. I. Jaffe, Vice-President; D. M. Hamblen, Secretary-Treasurer; and A. W. Bancroft, Ordinance Officer. Pro- fessor Devine is the Faculty Adviser. The members this year are: G. Adelman, E. Andrew, H. J. Aronson, F. S. Ballato, A. W. Welch, Jr Jerry Tatton ' s Red and Black varsity track team, led by high jumper Joe Lavin, completed its third undefeated indoor season, trampling Bates, Bowdoin, Brown, and Maine underfoot, but spoiled its record by losing to the University of New Hampshire in the only outdoor meet of the year. For the first time in the history of Northeastern athletics, freshmen were allowed to compete on varsity teams. Had it not been for this fortunate ruling, the season ' s record might have been an entirely different story. The veteran backbone of the team was formed by Joe Lavin in the jumps. Bob Carroll in the dis- tances, Charlie Pistorino in the weights, Delmo Alberghini and George Welch in the hurdles, and Jimmy Ramsey with Frank McCann in the dashes. Demon Delmo Alberghini provided the in- dividual spotlight of the year by crowding more 118 national and sectional honors into one year than would seem possible for one man. He started things off by winning the 50 yard low hurdles in the New England A. A. U. Indoor Champion- ships at Tufts, establishing a record for the event; then he went down to Madison Square Garden for the IC4A Indoor Meet and surprised all the experts by taking second to Tom Todd of Vir- ginia, the defending champion. One week later at the University of Maine, he equaled the world ' s record of 7.8 sec. for the 70 yard low hurdles as well as copping the high hurdles to establish a new meet record. Outdoors Del proceeded to greater feats by winning the New England IC3A Outdoor Cham- pionship 220 yard low hurdles, placing third in the lows at the IC4A Outdoor Championships, winning the high hurdles, the low hurdles, the 220 yard dash, and placing third in the hundred in the dual meet with the University of New Hampshire. Followed by his fellow timber- topper, George Welch, he smashed the low hur- dle record at the New England A. A. U. Outdoor Championships held at Boston College. Two weeks later the inseparable pair journeyed to New York for the National A. A. U. Championships. Del climaxed his career by placing second in the Junior 200 meter hurdles, while George took sixth place in the corresponding Senior event, scoring eight points between them. On February 22, 1943 Northeastern successfully defended its title in the New England A. A. U. Indoor Championships at Tufts with a score of 241 2 points. Alberghini and Bob Carroll took individual honors by winning the low hurdles and the 1000 respectively. The relay team composed of Ray Southwick, Bob Ryrholm, Frank McCann, and Ray Furbush defeated Rhode Island State and placed third to Tufts and M. I. T. Captain Joe Lavin and Fred Cariero tied at five feet eleven inches for second place in the high jump. Charlie Pistorino heaved the shot 42 ' 3% to take second to Bill Gilligan of the Army. In the triangular meet with Bates and Bow- doin, the Huskies really went to town. Del Al- berghini set a new record in the forty-five yard high hurdles of 6.0 seconds, as well as leading a Northeastern sweep in the dash. Joe Lavin was also a double place winner, taking the high jump at 6 ' 1 and third in the broad jump. Sweeping the dash, 300. and 600, the Huskies won the meet with a score of 66V2 points to Bowdoin ' s 30 and Bates ' s 1H 2- Del Alberghini ' s triumphs were the only events that enlivened Husky track fans during the out- door season, as Uncle Sam called more and more trackmen to the colors. Jerry, however, is pre- pared to start from scratch again and build up a new team for the coming year. 119 Yacht Club - right: Knowlten. Brisham. Lundfelt. Richardson. Baker. . : - ' _- ' .:: Mayo. Welch. 120 YACHT CLUB By Paul Mayo The fall of 1938 found N. U. without a nautical organization, but when Northeastern was invited to take part in a regatta at M. I. T., as a non-member of the Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association, two students, Ray Dion, ' 40 and Art Hartford, ' 40, represented Northeastern on their own. They won the regatta. And they won again when they unofficially repre- sented N. U. the following spring at Brown, winning the I. C. Y. R. A. non-member cham- pionship plaque for the second year. With two victories in a tough competitive field stowed away, the boys felt confident to go to Professor Parsons in the hope of organizing an official yacht club. They soon received his sanction and Prof. Rudolf O. Oberg was ap- pointed adviser to the group. So the club started with seventy-five charter members, who were determnied to obtain membership in the I. C. Y. R. A. After dominating the field of associate mem- bers for a year, N. U. joined the major league of yachting when the invitation to membership in the I. C. Y. R. A. was extended in May, 1940. The club now competes against some twenty-five colleges in the east and extending as far west as the University of Michigan. The pennant which now flies at all regattas was designed by the yachtsmen. Shore schools are held two or three times a year to instruct novices. Practice in handling the boats used to be held at M. I. T. only Saturday mornings, but now there is general sailing and racing daily at the Community Sailing Boat Club. From the bumperboard racing results our top skippers and crews are selected to represent the school at the regattas and top bumperboard skippers are awarded charms at the annual win- ter banquet. The Interclass Trophy was put into competition last year and was won by the class of ' 45. This year the club has entered all the I. C. Y. R. A. regattas and has done creditably, plac- ing no lower than seventh in fields of 12 to 15 colleges. Richardson, Bacon, and Paradis have been the leading skippers during the summer and fall. In the past few years Prof. Oberg has ac- tively participated on numerous committees such as the Community Sailing Association Committee, devoting much of his time and energy to improving the sailing facilities on the Charles River Basin. This year he was forced to resign to devote his full time to his new position of Alumni Director. The N. U. Y. C. presented the Professor Oberg Trophy to the I. C. Y. R. A. in recognition of his services to greater Boston intercollegiate racing; the trophy is put into competition twice a year among the greater Boston colleges. Professor Wayland Bailey was elected in his place as adviser and has already proved his worth to the club. Since all the officers are graduating the con- tinued success of the club rests with the Fresh- men who will, in spite of wartime difficulties, carry on the active racing schedules successfully. 121 Upper L lass UJirect w irecior 9 Abbondante, Cosmo, 2 E, 31 Rose Street, Somerville Abugov, Jacob, 2 E, 115 Glenville Avenue, Allston Adams, Joseph W., 3 E, 31 Lakehill Avenue, Arlington Aho, Raymond E., 2 E, 284 Elm Street, Fitchburg Aikens, Alexander E., Jr., 4 E, 844 Beacon Street, Boston Aisner, Jason A., 2 LA., 191 Babcock Street, Brookline Alberghini, Delmo F , 4 B.A., 7 Lowell Circle, Somerville Alexander, Dean D., 2 LA., 128 Marlboro Street, Wollaston Alfred, David S„ 3 F. 25 South Street, Brighton Allen, Erwin, 3 E, 672 Washington Street, Brookline Allen, Stuart E., 222 Hemenwav Street, Boston Aloupis, Spiros C, 2 E, 13 Brown Square, Ipswich Alpert, Sumner, 4 E. 147 Talbot Avenue, Dorchester Alves, Mario, 2 E, 52 Westbrook Street, New Bedford Andersen, Anders E„ 2 E, 769 Boylst-n Street, Brookline Andersen, Robert V., 2 E, 6 McKinley Avenue.
