IV We, of the Cauldron Board have endeavored to make this yearbook a snitable companion for onr class- mates throngh all the years to come. It is our hope that twenty years from now, the 1943 Cauldron will do a masterful job in summoning up new thoughts of old friends. Our best efforts are in this book. Volume XXII Innnal of lortheastern University Boston, Massachusetts. eaicaicion i We, the Class of 1943, dedicate our yearbook to Dean William C. White. By dedicating our yearbook to Dean White we wish to acknowledge and pay tribute to the part he has played in the growth of Northeastern. A man whose energy, ready smile, and friend- ly manner have made him one of the best liked members of the faculty. With men like him, Northeastern will continue to grow. William Crombie White Samuel Abbott Smith Strahan 1881-1942 Professor of Chemistry at Northeastern University since 1917 . . . Chairman of the Department of Chemistry from 1921 to 1938 . . . Member of American Chemical Society, Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education . . . Professor Strahan, known as Pop Strahan for years, will be remembered by all his students as a patient teacher with a seemingly unlimited knowledge of organic chemistry. Everyone who had him as a teacher agrees it was a privilege to take one of his courses. He attended North Adams public schools, Fitchburg State Teachers College, Lowell Institute, George Washington University, Harvard Uni- versity, and Northeastern University and has both an Ed.M. and a B.S. degree. After working at many other jobs he came to Northeastern University in 1924 and has taught in the Mechanical Engineering Department since then. He is married and lives at 77 Greenwood Street, Greenwood, Mass. He is a member of Tau Beta Pi, S.P.E.E., A.S.M.E., and Phi Gamma Pi Fraternity. Our class has been fortunate in having Prof. Whittaker as our adviser and his experi- ence and council has often straightened us out of our difficulties. All members of the class rate him highly as a friend and a counsellor and feel that their college life has been made fuller because of his acquaintance. This tribute is our commemoration to a difficult task well handled. Senior Class Officers Ambrose B. Nangeroni George L. Richardson Henry O. Willis Lawrence T. Wilson Senior Dean ' s List 97 Class History FRESHMAN Our first day at Northeastern was a new adventure for most of us. Although we all tried hard to act as if we weren ' t really con- fused, as a whole we just blundered through it. At the end of the week of orientation over a hundred of us went off to freshman camp and enjoyed a great weekend of boating and swimming. Everyone laughed at the fel- lows who dressed to go home and then, on going for a last canoe ride, overturned at the dock. The attempt to dry their clothes on the roof of the bunk house failed miserably and borrowed clothes had to replace the stil l wet ones. You can still hear some of the jokes that the fellows swapped during the wee hours of the morning. School really started the next Monday when the regular scheduled classes met. As the term progressed, we gradually felt that we could not be distinguished from the upper-classmen and some stopped wearing their ties. We were amazed when an upper- classman asked where our ties were or cut ours off at the knot because it was not the freshman tie. It seems that our drawing cases and general appearance gave us away. The hurricane was one of the most pop- ular subjects discussed between classes that year. Experiences were related over and over, and narrow escapes were told, with improvements, to friends and classmates. Freshman sports were quite successful as a whole. The track team and cross country team showed the promise of a great squad. The cross country team was undefeated all season and went on to place third in the I. C. 4A. meet. The freshman football team won only one game and lost many by large scores but still many players showed ability and the coaches were not discouraged at fu- ture prospects. Basketball and hockey had an average season with the wins and losses about equal. The baseball team showed the power that was to make them runner-up for the New England Champs when we were Juniors. We elected Alexander Rutledge, Eugene Smith, Francis McKenzie, and Roger Broek- er as our class officers. That was the year we couldn ' t go broke with Broeker as treas- urer. We didn ' t, either, and ran a very suc- cessful dance at the Hotel Touraine called the Whisker Frisker. Also we ran a smoker in Bates Hall to help the fellows get ac- quainted with each other. The fraternities also gave smokers to our class and many of the fellows were thus able to see and get acquainted with the advan- tages of fraternity life. Many accepted pledges and became members. To non- commuters, the fraternities offer both a home and a bigger part in school life. The honor societies give awards to the highest ranking freshman in their respective colleges each year, both as an incentive to future freshmen and as an award for out- standing scholarship. Tau Beta Pi, then the Senate, gave their award to Lyman Andrews, Jr., and Donald W. Robinson, Jr., for being 98 che highest ranking Engineering students in our class when we were Freshmen. The Academy gave their award to Milton L. Cantor and the Sigma Society gave their award to George W. Dewey for being the highest ranking freshmen in their respective colleges. SOPHOMORE Going into the Sophomore yea r, many anxiously looked for old friends only to find they had been changed to the other division. While this at first seemed like a bad point in the cooperative plan, new friends were soon made and it was soon forgotten. That we were now upper-classmen overshadowed all else. We felt it our privilege to ask the freshmen where their caps were, and to heckle them some. We settled down a little more to studying, discussed jobs and the cooperative department, entered into varsity sports and had members on the Student Council. We now felt a little more at home and as if we were here to stay. All in all, we had advanced as was expected of us. That year we ran two class functions, a Sophomore Session and a Moonlight Sail. The Sophomore Session was held at the Hotel Bradford and run by Division A, while the Moonlight Sail was arranged by Division B and was held oh the S. S. Steel Pier. Both were well attended and success- ful financially and socially. Many men went out for varsity sports and, while only a few made varsity letters, the Middlers and Juniors felt the pressure from our class. Many made the teams and would fill the ranks as soon as they had gained a little more experience. Some of those that made their letters as Sophomores are James Jefferson and Philip Sheridan in football; John Campbell, Richard Carpenter, Robert Tarbell and John Fitzpatrick in track; Don- ald Hansis and Chauncey Del Grosso in hockey. Also that year the News received its usual high rating, showing that we were capable of something besides studies and sports. It is interesting to follow the trend of the topics discussed by the speakers at mass meetings as we progressed through school. During our Freshman year the topics were Isolationism and the Munich Conference. During our Sophomore year, it was neutral- ity and its eff ects on our country. During the Middler year it had changed to a more up-to-date subject. MIDDLER Coming back as Middlers, we had an in- exhaustible subject for class room bull ses- sions in the new draft law. While not all were subject to this first registration, all commented and joked about it. Dean Ell was inaugurated as President of the University at the Opera House in the fall. At the inauguration, Dr. Ell ' s address was very appropriate, on the University ' s standing in the war effort. We held only one dance that year, a formal at the Hotel Continental. It was as big a social success for those present as any affair we had run, but financially we lost. 99 King Husky I died after thirteen years of faithful service and his loss was mourned by all. A new Queen Husky, presented by Mrs. Seeley and of the same blood lines as King Husky I, stole the hearts of all with her cute actions but died soon after her coronation. Mrs. Seeley then presented the present mas- cot, King Husky II, who now reigns. J U N I OR When we came back as Juniors, we were glad to be rid of that bane to Northeastern students, the Middler Year, with its explana- tions. Little did we think that people would wonder why we had been to college for four years and were only juniors and that the lengthy explanation must still be repeated. This year everything pointed to the social high point of our college life, the Junior Prom. The committee under Ed Shea worked steadily for thirty weeks making arrange- ments, selling tickets and laughing at guesses of whom the students thought the band might be. Finally most of the class had bought their tickets and asked their girls so the committee felt safe in announcing the band. Bob Ches- ter and his orchestra. The choice was re- ceived with elation, for all knew that he would supply good music. When the day came, the fellows strode into the Hotel Statler in tails as if they always wore them. Of course they did feel uncomfortable at first but after a few minutes, everyone felt as much at home as in an ordinary suit. Just Class History before supper, the Queen of the Prom was chosen, the beautiful Miss Marjorie Bates, guest of Robert W. Clark, ' 44. She reigned over the grand march and gave out favors to all the girls present. The grand march was so long that only about half the people were in the Imperial Ballroom; the other half were in the Reception room immedi- ately outside the ballroom. When supper was served, although it was not as good as was hoped for, everyone re- laxed and talked of pepole they had seen, while the orchestra played some specialty numbers. Then they also took an inter- mission. As the end of the dance approached, the tired students gradually left one or two at a time, but many stayed until the end, not wanting to end such a wonderful evening until it was absolutely necessary. Dancing to the smooth music, sitting at the tables and talking to your best friends, and seeing old friends you didn ' t know were still in school was part of an evening none will forget. Our prom, like every other, is now just a memory of a good time. SENIOR When we were Juniors the school an- nounced a stepped-up program of four years instead of five. It was now Division A ' s turn to go summers and perspire during the hot days and try to study on warm summer nights and weekends. Softball became a popular sport for noon hours and after school with the Seniors chal- lenging all and beating all. In the lot be- 100 hind Richards Hall one could almost always see someone playing. The Senior vs. Fac- ulty games were great, with the dynamic Prof. Joe Spear driving the faculty and Char- lie Hennessey pushing the Seniors. Behind the pitching of Vincent Negrini, the Seniors were able to roll up large scores and hold the opposition to a few tallies. At the Senior splash party, the orchestra was a disappointment but everyone had a good time swimming and dancing. Prof. Whittaker and his judges had a real job in selecting a queen and her maids of honor but did a fine job in selecting Miss Le Fla- hive, guest of William H. Rathgeber, ' 43 E. Next the Student Council ran an all- University day which nearly failed but which the Division A Industrials helped to make a real success. The open house, splash party and dance was Robert Willis ' idea remod- eled to fit the school requirements, and it is likely that the function will continue to be held each year unless the war interferes. The Senior Week Committee was organ- ized and started work to arrange the Senior Week functions. Jack Campbell was elected chairman and under his leadership, five functions were arranged and run off with success. The Senior Ball rivaled the Junior Prom for fun and enjoyment. The music of Andy Jacobson and his band was wonderful. The Dinner Dance at the Hotel Statler in the Georgean Room, also, was something differ- ent from anything we had run before and was well received. The Stag Banquet was not what the fellows wanted but everyone had a good time and it was well attended. Division B ' s Stag Banquet and Dinner Dance have still to be run before graduation but everyone knows they will be as success- ful as all other functions we have run. These last two years in school have been sort of hectic and excitement has run high. Everyone has talked about how he stood in the draft or how he got in the reserves. Stories of army life, battles, and draft stories have filled in the few minutes between classes. Now everyone is talking of his new job or when he will go into the service. All are anxious to finish school and join or help those members of our class who could not or would not wait to get into active combat. This history would not be complete if we did not mention those men who were out- standing all through school. We have listed them under the Men of Energy so there is no need to repeat the names but we do offer our congratulations to them. To this list, names like Mike Prohodsky, Wally Sullivan, Al Pajonas and Joe Dias should be added since they were members of our class but doubled up and so graduated one year ahead of us. We are leaving our pre-football rallies, before class bull sessions, school functions, rush and scramble for milk in the Husky Hut at noon, and our friends to go out on the most important work period in our life. From the start it will require a lot of hard work and fighting but it is here we fail or succeed and here, also, are the real goals in life. May our efforts help to build a better world for all. G. To Messrs. Waid and Miss Dempsey of the Waid Studio, for their ready cooperation. To the Student Activities Department and Miss Peppard, and other depart- ments and secretaries, for their patience and assistance; and to faculty members for their friendly assistance. To John K. Dalgleish, ' 46, who helped materially with the informal picture We want to acknowledge especially the tremendous contribution of Professor Marston, who helped so much in putting out this book. We appreciate the assistance of Robert C. Campbell, ' 43, and Carl R. Dillon, ' 44, who, knowing that they could not be editors of the book next year, never- theless worked hard and effectively as members of the Junior Staff. The Board feels very deeply indebted to Mr. Russell Knight of the Stobbs Press, for his wealth of ability and experience which was so readily available and so generously given. With people like these helping, the load has been lightened, and real pleasure and satisfaction has been derived by all of the Board in preparing and issuing the 1943 Cauldron. 104 UTIHTIES Tan Beta Pi IRVING T. Besides their usual duties at all the football and basketball games, three successful outdoor football rallies gave this capable squad opportunity to display their talents. Always rec- ognized as champions of team and school spirit, these men did much to give our teams the lift they needed when the going was tough. Other members of this white sweatered aggregation were Robert Gross, ' 44, Joseph Gibadilo, ' 47, Elwood Fraser, ' 47, and Edward Agababian, ' 47. i a ? m International Relations Clnb Complex world-shaking developments gave new im- petus to this active club and the two hour luncheon meetings were again highly successful. Prepared talks by members of the club featured each meeting and group discussions were guided by Dr. Roger S. Hamilton, faculty adviser. Popular subjects for discussion were Post- ' War plan- nings, Russia ' s position in World Affairs, and England and her Colonies. The highlight of the year was the New England Con- ference of International Relations Clubs sponsored by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace at Colby Junior College. N. U. delegates to this conference were: Robert E. Hogan, ' 43, Richard, E. Moody, ' 43, Frederic D. O ' Neill, ' 43, Frank Dowcett, ' 44, and Stanley Pollard, ' 45. CLUBS 111 Science Club The Science Club, formerly known as the Astronomy Club, has reported the completion of another successful year. Because of the non-technical nature of the subjects discussed, the club ' s membership included many students from the Colleges of Business Administration and Lib- eral Arts. Activities for the season included the study of geology, astronomy, meteorology, physics and chemistry, with the emphasis this year on minerals. Informal talks and group discussions, with all members participating, fea- tured the weekly meetings. This year ' s officers are: President, James Cornish, ' 46; Vice-President, John Miller, ' 47; Secretary-Treasurer, James I. Connelly, ' 46. Faculty Adviser to the club is Prof. C. David Johnson. Law and Accounting Club The year was high-lighted by an exceptionally large enrollment in the club and by continually well-attended meetings. Prof. D ' Alessandro favored the club by giving in- formal lectures on the subjects of insurance and income tax. Other meetings were featured by student talks which were followed by group discussions, all members of the club participating. A two-hour luncheon meeting, held at the Cafe de Paris, brought the club ' s activities to a brilliant close. Approximately 50 members attended the luncheon and listened to an interesting, after-dinner talk by the guest speaker. Prof. Gerstein. Other faculty guests were Prof. D ' Alessandro, faculty adiser, Mr. Joseph Golemme, and Mr. Lyman Keith. President Richard E. Moody intro- duced the guest speaker. Officers of the club are: Presidents, Richard E. Moody, ' 43, and Henry J. McArdle, ' 43 ; Vice-President, Carl E. Gubellini, ' 43 ; Secretary-Treasurers, Harley S. Goldman, ' 46, and Anthony Coscia, ' 44. CLUBS 112 Chess Club Under the able direction of Professor Coolidge, the Tuesday and Thursday meetings of the Chess Club were well attended by followers of this ever popular game of skill. Beginners were taught the fundamentals of the game and the old timers pondered over new and complicated moves of strategy in an attempt to some day defeat the good Professor. Leading the group this year were John H. Kerr, ' 44, as President and John H. Taylor, ' 46, as Secretary- Treasurer. 1 Rifle Club With most students already enlisted in some branch of the armed services, the rifle club took on new and greater significance. Both noon and evening schedules were arranged to accommodate the great number of students who wished to qualify for their N. R. A. certificates of marksmanship. From the best marksmen of the club, the rifle team members were selected to compete in matches with neigh- boring colleges. A victory over Worcester Tech opened the season and successive matches with Tufts, M. I. T. and Harvard provided the Husky sharpshooters with keen competition. The officers of the club are Everett L. Stone, ' 43, Pres- ident; David M. Straight, ' 43, Vice-President; Robert B. Richmond, ' 45, and Ernest Downing, ' 47, Secretary- Treasurers; Vernon P. Carpenter, ' 43, and Curtis L. MILO, Jr. Managing Editor RICHARD E. MOODY Managing Editor The Cauldron Board, this year, has honestly tried to accomplish its objective — to collect and edit as much of your college life as possible. We hope that this book will renew pleasant memories of your college life as it knocks around the world with you. We have tried to make this a better yearbook for you. We shall not attempt to cover up the fact that the war has brought us additional difficulties, but if we have failed it is because of our inabilities, and not because of the war. We lost a most capable man, Arthur Annis, to the selective service, but we hope that we have finished his job in a manner that approaches what he would have done. We still have left the job of selecting next year ' s Cauldron Board, from the Junior Staff on the following page. A year ' s association with the Staff and with the Cauldron tradition are our only prerequisites for this privilege. G. L. R. 116 ARTHUR T. ANNIS Photographic Editor RICHARD A. Yankowski, ' 45 140 Track The Season VARSITY CROSS COUNTRY By Jack Campbell Coach Jerry Tatton gathered the remains of a draft-blown varsity cross country team together early last fall. With a sharp eye scanning the horizon and the freshman registration records for first-year talent with which to bolster his de- pleted hill and dale aggregation, he set himself to the task of building a new team to replace the one which in the past two years had brought him two third places in the New England Inter-Colle- giate championships, a three-for-five and a four- for-five dual meet record and a fourth and an eleventh place in the two National Champion- ship meets in New York. Four of the seven men who had represented Northeastern in those four championship meets had gone the way of war and graduation, leaving a nucleus of three veterans around which to build the title contending team which Coach Tatton finally evolved. The heaviest loss to the Tatton cause was the departure to the armed services of Captain Ed Parker, while at the same time the Bill half of the Carroll combination wouldn ' t be scoring any points for the Husky harriers while toting a gun for Uncle Sam. Jerry found three of the freshmen he had been looking for, added them to his three-man nucleus and tossed in a pair of dependable sophomores for good measure, and the combination came within one place in the I. C. 4A meet of equaling to a T, the record of the harrier teams of the previous two years, recognized as the strongest in the Tat- ' ton regime and among the best in the cross coun- try history of Northeastern. Further, if Jerry had found the fourth freshman in time his 1942 team might easily have bettered the record set up by their immediate predecessors. The three-man veteran nucleus was made up of the ever dependable Warren Doe, Bob Kodis, and Bob Carroll, all three of whom were veterans of the New England and National meets of last year. Within three days Coach Tatton had in his fold two former high school stars, Walter Crowly of Hingham and Ray Furbush of Framingham, each of whom sported enviable records in scholastic track circles. Crowly won the South Shore Inter- scholastic mile title for Hingham High while Furbush was credited with a 2:00 minute half mile as a schoolboy at Framingham High. Dick Carpenter, Captain of the 1941 team, was in the meantime coaching a junior varsity team from which he sent promising runners to Coach Tatton for tryouts with the varsity. The first product of the Carpenter farm team was fresh- man Bill Foster of York Harbor, Maine. Foster made the varsity grade with little trouble and fin- ished in a four way tie for first place in his first varsity race. It was not until the varsity had run off three of their meets, however, that Carpenter sent freshman Payson Kenyon up for his try at the varsity five-mile distance. Kenyon finished within the first five of the Husky team in the meet with Tufts but Coach Tatton did not have time enough to have him entered in the two title meets. Had 141 The Season Kenyon been available, the Northeastern record in those two meets might well have been better. Paced by freshman Crowly and veteran Carroll, Northeastern started off their season with an 18-39 victory over the University of Connecticut Nut- meggers. This was but the second time, although the second successive time, that a Northeastern harrier team had beaten the U Conns in over a dec- ade. Ed Bowen in third place was the only Con- necticut runner to finish among the first five and was followed across the line by Northeastern ' s Bob Kodis, Warren Doe, and Erwin Davis. The seventh and eighth spots went to the Nutmeggers with Bob Ryrholm finishing ninth and Gordon Furbush and Joe Abu winding up the scoring in twelfth and fifteenth spots. The Huskies repeated the perfect score victory performance ov ' elr Bates College which had been registered the previous year by piling six red- shirted runners across the line before the first Bobcat runner. Doe, Carroll, Foster and Crowly finished in a four-way tie for first place in this meet with Kodis and Davis making it certain in fifth and sixth places ahead of the Bates man. It was in this meet that Warren Doe began his lack- of-luck streak that followed him through the re- mainder of the year. Halfway over the ragged, rough and tumble Lewiston, Maine course Doe hung himself up on a barbed wire fence and had a lot of ground to make up in order to finish in his first place tie. With two victories and no defeats Northeastern journeyed to Kingston, R. I., to meet the national champion Rhode Island State College Rams and there it was the same old story. The Ram hung a 15-48 perfect score defeat on the Husky with six blue-clad Rhody runners crossing the line ahead of Walt Crowly and Bill Foster in seventh and eighth places. It was after this meet that the Husky harriers made Northeastern history by electing freshman Walt Crowly to the varsity captaincy to replace Eddie Parker, now a Corporal in the Army ' s Chemical Warfare Division. Three years of hard work, courage, concentra- tion and consistency brought a story book finish to the college cross country career of Bob Kodis, who led the Husky hill and dalers to a third place in the New England Intercollegiate championship race over the Franklin Park course and a week later to twelfth place among twenty cream-of-the- crop Eastern collegiate harrier teams in the an- nual I. C. 4A meet on the Van Cortland Park course in New York city. For three years Kodis had been a run-of-the-mill harrier with poten- tialities never quite realized but he showed that he was due when he led his teammates to a close 27-30 win over the Jumbo runners of Tufts Col- lege and then confirmed it in the two big meets of the year. Northeastern trailed the ever-powerful Rams from Rhode Island and the Gymnasts of Spring- field College in the New Englands. Kodis led the Northeasterners in eighteenth place followed by teammate Bill Foster in twentieth place and Walt Crowly in twenty-fourth. Bob Carroll, after setting too fast a pace in the early stages of the race, dropped back from his lead position after 142 First Row. hit to right: Lavin, Carroll, Parker. Prohodsky. Lady Lackluck followed Doe into this meet also and dropped him out of championship scoring for the first time in his three years of running at Northeastern. She tripped him out of his front running position on what is known to Husky harriers as Horse Hill, the sur- face of which is as likely as not to chase the run- ner down its steep slope to the very bottom. Doe was well up with the leaders before this knee and shin scraping tumble but was out of the running for the rest of the meet. Kodis continued his front-running ways when the Tattonmen traveled to New York City to compete in the national I. C. 4A championships on the hilly Van Cortland Park course. Kodis led the Northeasterners into a twelfth place out of a field of twenty colleges and was followed into the finish line by Captain Walter Crowly, Bill Foster, Ray Furbush, and Joe Abu. White, ' 45 (N) Bernard Vespucci, ' 46 John Zachischuk, ' 45 (N) The Season By Dave Murphy, ' 44 Football at Northeastern got off to one of the earliest starts ever experienced by the intown uni- versity, with fifty candidates reporting for in- formal sessions in the middle of August. The reasons for such an early start were many. Most important, the Huskies were to be guided by a new coach, named Emmanuel Flumere. Flu- mere, an alumnus of Northeastern, is the first graduate to coach football at his Alma Mater, and he joins the alumni-coach group made up of Par- sons, Tatton, and Gallagher. Foxy, as he is known through the sports circles, was selected to succeed his former boss and coach, Jimmy Dunn, who answered the call to duty by his country and is now serving in North Africa with the Army. Flumere ' s first duty was to equip himself with an adequate coaching staff, in order to replace Tony Staruski and Herb Gallagher, who also are serving with the armed forces. The new assistants were Stan Benjamin and Jim Ryan, two men who had played the game, and who know it from A to Z. As though it wasn ' t bad enough to lose such a fine coaching staff, the Husky squad lost most of its men to the armed forces — Lennie Erickson, one of the smartest guards ever to matriculate at Northeastern; Moose Makris, Big Ed Jensen, both sterling tackles ; Pete Galuffo and blocking back Gale Foster, whose sensational punting will live in the minds of all Husky followers; Mike DeMeo and John Dillon. All these are now playing on bigger gridirons, in which the stakes are high and the injuries numerous. With these setbacks in view, optimistic Foxy set out to give the Red and Black followers an offensive minded team. His first move was to in- stall a new system, the T formation, and to change Captain Dick Grey ' s 205 pounds from his center position to left halfback, to make the most of his extraordinary power. After weeks of gru- elling practices and scrimmages, the Husky squad was in tip top condition, but they were a little let down to learn that their first game, with Arnold College, was cancelled. So, for its first game the Red and Black jour- neyed out to Pratt Field, Springfield, to take on the Gymnasts. Two games under Springfield ' s belt, plus multiple injuries suffered by ace ball carrier Ed Sakovitz and by Dave Murphy and Dick Grey, proved too much for the Huskies, who were vanquished to the tune of 13 to 0. It was here on Pratt Field that a hungry Husky horde of two years ago tasted their first victory in two years, and sent the Gymnasts on a two-year win- less spree. This year the outstanding men for 144 TInrd Roo hit lo nght Ka Moore Jenkins, Glick, Corbisiero, Otenti, Captain Grey, Vespucci, Zachirchuk, Krajcwski, Redgate, Shannon. ch Flumere, DlMuzio, Mclntyre, Bartelloni Foster, Douglas, Pytka, Mahoney, Beutel, MacAdam, Lalikos, Hunter, Sikalis Keating Connor Maker, Jones, Manager. I J Philips Pearce, T Philips Kellev Hilton Hea th. Fennell, Sharp, Washburn, Alberghini, Gwazdosky, Johnston, Wilden Assistant Coach Ryan the Huskies on that warm afternoon were Ed Pytka at guard, and the explosive running of Fred Pierce, who was playing his first year in organized ball. The Red and Black played host to Bates at Huntington Field, but the Bobcats were too good for the crippled Huskies, who were forced to use their inexperienced freshmen. The Cards, Walk- ers, and Johnsons were too much for the Huskies this year, though they had managed to keep them bottled up for the past two years. The Bates boys went back to Maine much elated over a 12 to victory. The Husky, ever gameful, ventured from his lair for the encounter with a strong American In- ternational at Springfield. The plucky Flumere- men put up a stiff battle with the Aces, and were finally edged out by a last-minute off tackle play by Benjamin which netted the Aces a total of twenty-five yards and a vital 6 points. The game ended 6 to 0, with the Aces taking the honors. Bob Otenti ' s fine punting was easily the high spot in the Husky moral victory. With hopes high the Husky returned to his den to take on the Tufts jumbo from Medford. A highly favored Tufts eleven was due for a surprise that bright Saturday afternoon, when the Husky rose to great heights and came from behind to tie the Jumbo 6 to 6. Two freshmen. Hank Bartel- loni and Bob Sharpe, provided the needed impetus to give the Huskies their first touchdown of the year. The next fracas was to be with Lowell Textile, but the football schedule of Lowell also was can- celled for the duration. Through the good friend- ship that existed between the coach at North- eastern and the coach at Boston University, a game was scheduled to fill the place of Lowell. Thus came about the first official football game ever to be played between these two schools. This game proved to be a disappointment from the point of view of the Husky followers, who watched their warriors go down to a humiliating 37 to 6 defeat, A long pass from Cookie Gwaz- dosky to Bob Mclntyre, two more freshmen, gave Northeastern its second and final score of the 1942 season. The injury riddled Husky was reluctant to ring down the curtain on the 1942 season until after its journey to Durham, New Hampshire, where it en- countered the undefeated Wildcats. New Hamp- shire remained in the undefeated class, after hand- ing the Huskies an 18 to shellacking. The well coached Wildcat team and the biting winds proved too big an obstacle for the Northeastern team to overcome. So, the Huskies have had a dismal season, so far as scores and victories are concerned. But, rallying round two great leaders. Foxy Flumere and Dick Grey, the squad learned football, gained experience, and showed a lot of fight. Most of the fellows will use that fight, soon, where there will be no defeats, and where stout hearts can bring victories. 145 Baseball The Team Fred Antinarelli, ' 44 (N) Michael J. Included in their achievements was the second New England College Conference championship in three years — it was also the sec- ond championship in the forty-four-year history of Northeastern. The team gained recognition as the Back Bay Bombers because of its slugging ability. Every position was filled by a competent ballplayer, led by the ever-dependable Captain, ' Wally Sullivan. Four ballplayers of our original class of 1943, accelerated because of the war, played on the two championship clubs, and played major roles, in the past three years in the grand total of 36 wins against 7 defeats. These veterans — Wally Sulli- van, AI Pajonas, Mickey Maguire, and Ernie Co- lantonio — played together for four consecutive years, and did their share in bringing North- eastern to the attention of the baseball public. The season as seen from center field As the Huskies returned from Rhode Island they brought not only the bacon (l4 to 8) but also the first victory on Rhode Island grounds. Ernie Colantonio hurled 3-hit ball for 7 innings, with Chicken Coole finishing up. Sullivan, Pa- jonas, and Maguire hit hard and often, the latter driving in 4 runs. Again victorious over Harvard, to the tune of 5 to 2, and it was Ernie Colantonio allowing the Crimson 5 scattered hits. The game was iced in the first inning by Maguire ' s perfect bunt, fol- lowed by Pajonas ' single to center field. Wally Sullivan lashed out a mighty triple to deep right center, scoring both Maguire and Pajonas. Al and WALLACE F. SULLIVAN, ' 42 (N) Captain GEORGE A. SAVAGE, ' 43 (N) Manager MR. HERBERT W. GALLAGHER Coach MR. EMMANUEL A. FLUMERE Assistant Coach BERNARD SOLOMON, ' 46 Assistant Manager Robert Maker, ' 44 (N) George P. Makris, ' 45 William W. Malcolm, ' 45 James R. Maguire, Jr., ' 43 (N) Richard Morrissey, ' 45 Robert B. Otenti, ' 45 (N) Alphonse Pajonas, ' 42 (N) Fred S. Pearce, ' 45 (N) Daniel J. Roberts, ' 45 Edward J. Sakovitz, ' 44 (N) William L. Shannon, ' 45 (N) Joseph Souza, ' 45 Russell A. Stiles, ' 45 Wallace F. Sullivan, ' 42 (N) Clarence N. Trullson, ' 43 (N) George E. Yankowsky, ' 45 (N) Oscar Khederian combined for one run in the fourth, while Colantonio and Yankowski took care of two more in the ninth. Baseball being baseball, the Huskies traveled to Connecticut only to lose, by a score of 10 to 7, a loosely played game. Connecticut gathered 17 base hits, while holding Northeastern to 10 hits. Errors were our undoing, with 3 in the field, and 3 more in the outfield. Back to the win column by virtue of a 9 to 2 win at home over Rhode Island. Colantonio re- peated his first performance with another 3-hit game. Yorker Trullson and Skee Khederian led the hit parade with three apiece. Eddie Sakovitz laced out a triple. Frank Merriwell style in this one, as the Hus- kies took Colby, 9 to 8. Ernie entered the game in the ninth inning with the score at 8 to 6, two men on, none out. He passed the next batter, filling the bases, but in Colantonio fashion he struck out the next two batters and forced the third to pop out. Mike Azzone lined a single to start the last of the tenth, and continued to second on an error. Fred Pearce sacrificed Mike down to third base and Lefty Coole, playing Merriwell for the day, quickly laid down a perfect squeeze bunt, allowing Mike to score and to clinch a well- deserved victory. A double victory over New Hampshire by the scores of 3 to 2 and 10 to 1. Captain Sullivan ended a pitching duel between Colantonio and Ir- ving (Sheik) Karelis with a tremendous home run in the tenth inning of the first game. Fred Pearce saved the ball game in the eighth inning with an over-the-shoulder catch near the fence in left field. The Huskies gathered 10 hits, includ- ing Sullivan ' s home run, Maguire ' s triple, and Sakovitz ' s double. In the second game the Bombers went to town, scoring freely, with Pajonas and Pearce leading the hitting. Al hit one over left field fence for 146 First Row. left to risht: Yankowski. We took Connecticut 7 to 6 at Huntington Field. The game was won in the closing minutes by a walk to Azzone, a bunt by Pearce, with a double error by Connecticut which allowed Mike to scamper all the way home. Skee Khederian thrilled everybody with a home run hit over the center field fence — a trick very rarely done. The Huskies again clinched the New England College Conference League Championshop as they took a double-header from Maine — 3 to 1 and 2 to 1. Coole allowed but two safeties in the League clincher, thanks to three runs driven in by George Yankowski. The night cap was controlled by George Mor- rissey, who allowed the Down-Mainers 5 scattered hits. Three games with Boston College found our mighties victorious in the premiere, winning by the score of 3 to 2 in the last of the ninth on a timely double by Ed Sakoitz to complete a hit-and- run play with Mickey Maguire on first. Maguire jumped the pitch and scored on the smash. Mike Azzone was sensational in the field. The second and third games were lost by scores of 5 to 3 and 5 to 2, at Boston College. Overshad- owing the scores were the fielding gems by Azzone and Maguire. Mike raced back of first base with a timely dive, and came up with what would have gone for two bases. Mickey made an impossible on what would have been a triple, when he raced into left field territory and back handed a low liner. At the close-of-season banquet the team re- ceived gold baseball charms from the University. It was a pleasing tribute to a great ball club, which contained names like Sullivan, Pajonas, Khederian, Yankowski — names hard to match in any baseball circles. Soon after that night Herb Gallagher joined the Navy, and thus ended a brilliant season of baseball.
