There are many characteristics that distinguish the true professional man. Important among these is his desire to continue to grow in intellectual stature and in usefulness to society. College curricula frequently mark the terminal point of formal education, but they should be also the commencement of a life-long cul- tural and professional development. Education is no static thing which can be acquired and dismissed from mind like a suit of clothes, but a process that should go on continuously as long as we live. Some of you who are being graduated from North- eastern this June will go on to advanced study in other universities, others will enter the armed forces of the nation, and many will begin work in industry. Wherever you may go and whatever your jobs may be, it is my hope that you will show yourselves respon- sive to the opportunities, so numerous in our country, for further enlarging your knowledge, your skill, and your serviceability to society. As you go forth from classroom and laboratory it is fitting that you should feel the glow of satisfaction re- sulting from a task well done. It is equally important that you be mindful that what you have accomplished is essentially a foundation and that yours is now the privilege and the responsibility of building upon it a happy and a fruitful life.
